Title: Need help with a dog I rescued.
Post by: GSPKurt on December 08, 2005, 06:30:11 PM
All-
I rescued a sweet German Shorthaired Pointer today from near Savannah, GA. He is heartworm positive. I am unemployed and VERY low on funds. Heartworm treatment is $450-$700.00. Would any of you kind people be interested in donating to help treat this dog? I would be forever in your debt. PM me if you can help.

man, i'd love to help if i could. If I had money i'd really help you out. Are there any places that will help your dog for free like an aspca type place. I know around here they have a spay/neuter bus that drives around and gives out operations for free. I will be praying for you and the dog.

Could we possibly set something up on here?

good lookin dog, poor thing...

but depending on how long he has had the heartworms, and how much damage they have done to his heart/lungs, u maybe looking on a much, much higher bill than that.

Just curious. What did you rescue him from an abusive owner, chained to a tree, lost? He is a good looking dog. My neighbor works for a vet and wants to know if you think he is heartworm positive based on his stools or did you take him to a vet? She also said the $250.00  discrepancy is alot from $450.00 to $700.00. She said if you found him today and took him to the vet today and they gave you an estimate that's a good sign. It means theres hope. She said if the heartworms were to advanced they would recommend putting him down. She wants to know what vet you took him to. Her boss may be able to get the bill lowered if he knows the vet you took him to. Worst case he may be willing to donate the medicine.

Thanks for your replies. He was found as a stray. No collar, no tags, no microchip. As you can see, he is young and in pretty good health. He is definitely saveable. Putting him down is not even being considered. I have called every vet in the Gainesville area, including the one I take my 6 dogs to. No luck on special prices yet, but there is a wide disparity in pricing for this treatment.

I have been in contact with icegirl, and continue to communicate with her about adoption. I also have another person who may be interested in him as well. We'll see. I have found that there are usually several failed attempts at adoption before one finally gets done, so I am patient.
