Title: Rodman Dam Ride '06
Post by: Jeffgre on December 07, 2005, 01:32:01 PM
Hello All, Any news on the annual Rodman Dam ride in January. I see there's a clean up scheduled and that's a good idea.

How about the ride? Need to start getting the gang together.

Thanks

Take hwy 40 east to 19. Make a left and go north. On 19 you will also pass an intersection on the left (rd 314) keep going straight for approx another 20 minutes and you will pass over a small bridge going over the Oklawaha River, then you know you a real close. Keep going and then you will see a large sign on the left that says Rodman Campground, fishing, etc. In the background should be the start of a huge bridge so you want to turn before the bridge. Across the road there is a sign for a “Boy’s Ranch” Turn left at the Rodman campground sign and follow the road down about 3 miles to parking area. Road dead ends into Rodman Pit.
If you pass the sign you will know because you will go over the “barge canal” a huge bridge. If so turn around go over the bridge and make your first right turn coming in that direction (south)

Below is a pic of the sign on your left side where you turn.

Thanks Eric!!!  :)

Hope that helps Flmedic911. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Now all we need is an updated GPS route for the ride. I have a track from last year but need an update as we were hacking through trees due to the hurricanes.  ???  ???

Any one have the 60 mile (approx) route to the 88 station and back?

Any help would be great!!!!!

Thanks.

I think the trails to get to the 88 store are closed. Also, with the way the rangers were talking this weekend at Big Scrub, Rodman might be closed by then. Anything in the ONF right now is kinda just go and see if its open and hope for the best. We were told by the rangers that after the 1st of the year all the trails will be closed to start the maintained trail system.

Will try my best to make one of these GROUP RIDES (at least be on time).
I will not be camping....but what can I expect at the starting point?
Are there Bar-b-que grills?  Bathrooms?  I have never been to Rodman......

From what I remember from my Rodman ride last year the bathrooms are the nearest bush or tree of your choice  ;D You basically park right next to the sandpit and thats where you start from. You will need to bring food and drinks because its a ways to the nearest store.

you cant legally ride to the 88 store any more. there are other destinations that are good. i havent been on-line in 2 months so im not sure if that trail system has started yet or not.

Is anyone welcome on this ride. I have about 5 to 10 bikes coming up to this area to ride that weekend. We would love to join this ride and get to meet people and see the area. Also does anyone know of any ATV ride clubs in this area?

cfrhinorider...Yeah, anyone who wants to go is fine. It would be great for you to come out and ride with us. Just keep in touch in this thread or email me directly at Jeffgre@aol.com.

jjamesbar...What areas around the 88 store are blocked? Have you been recently? If you know of any other routes/areas that would be good for a decent length ride, please let me know. I just received the maps from the ranger station and will look them over. Any input would be great.

Thanks!!!

Hey guys, I am interested in camping and joining in the fun.  I am looking forward to meeting some other people that like to ride as much as I do.

A couple of questions first.  Would it be okay for my son to go along, he is 9 but a pretty good rider? Second, I have a sport quad, I have no xtra racks to carry fuel but I am trying to get a utility quad for my wife to ride.  But if I am not able to will there be someone carrying xtra fuel or will I be able to strap some on someone's ATV that has utility racks??

Thanks and looking forward to meeting you guys.
Dave.

good point 'trailrider'.......how far we going on this ride?   We going to be close to empty or  what?
I don't even know how far my quad will go (600cc devided by 5 gallons).
I would reckon 60 miles anyway?  I don't really know.
I think most people will be safe on a tank of gas.....60 miles is a LONG trail ride.

they closed the woods right around the 88 store last spring. the trails to eurika dam are pretty nice but there is no way to tell you how to get through them. too many twist and turns. are the woods shut down yet for the new trail system?.

OK....just an idea.......but.............
If someone has a map of the "NEW" trail system, how about we ride it.
That way......we can all see what's up with it and if any short comings
are found, we can have a chance to air them before the trail becomes 'official'?
   Like i said......just an idea.
My Girlfriend is going to be out of town....so I have to take advantage
of it.  As of right now, I will be on the ride.

I rode 40 miles last weekend from rodman to 316 to lake delancey, to 19 as of right now I didn't see one sign of a new trail system anywhere. they still haven't started it yet, they did get rid of a few trails near delancey though

Is there room for two more?

My wife and I would like to join the ride.  We usually ride in the south forest and are interested in learning the north trails and meeting some people.

We would like to stay at Elite so that would be one cabin towards the group rate.  They currently have 7-8 available.

We rode 40 miles from 316 bridge to delance to rodman. Spoke to a ranger he adv they have installed the sign posts but are unsure when they will be putting the signs in them. So for now its all still open. Has anyone stayed at Lake Oklawaha camp ground?

Redtree......feb 11th for the main ride as far as I can tell.
There are some people camping overnight.....so I am sure the fun will continue into the next day.
I don't know that there is a 'firm' time to meet though...........
but I think 9-10 AM is not too early?
This will be my first BIG group ride, so I don't really know what I will need as far as substanance.  I don't know if there will be grills for burgers/steaks...(I may buy one of those disposable grills at Walgreens).
I travel with my own 'cooler' so thirst will be quenched.....it will be a learning experience.

The JIST was.......you (susie) could not make it because Hoss was unable to make it.   Meaning.........he was the reason not to go.
Hey..far from it for me to say why people come and go  (someday you will meet Barbara!!)
But if Barbara was On CALL..and I could not go somewhere....
I would EXPECT someone to call me on it.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Josh and I live in lakeland.  I was surfing the web and found this awsome web site.  My dad and I just bought  a couple of new qauds.  I am interested in joining in on the group ride.  I just wanted to know when I should show up and what to expect.  I don't want to show up and be the only one out there, or unprepaired. If any one would please send me some general info @ joshtaylor5520@tampabay.rr.com.

Thanks,
Josh

Hey Josh.....
I know what you mean by showing up and being...um....un- prepared.
I have gone several times to Ocala national Forest......and not recognising anyone.......ridden by myself.  Not that I dislike my company, but it is comforting to ride in a group.
The ride at rodman is almost assured to be a hoot....since at least three people are BOUND to show at once.
From what I can tell......people here are of  all different riding abilities (I am on par with a 9 year old as far as I can tell).
See if you and your dad can get on out......I am a definate "almost" as far as being able to get to the Rodman ride.  (I am always looking for 8 year olds to 'out ride'!!!!   (bring'em if you know 'em)  LMAO

Hello Everyone,

I am thinking about purchasing a GPS system.  I decided to get one after riding out at Big Scrub.  I was back on a trail and it took me a long time to find my way back.  Does anyone know what kind of unit I should look at getting?  I want to buy the right one but I don't want to buy too much or not enough, if you know what i mean.  I will probably purchase it from Bass Proshop.  I also was wondering, just how heavy one should pack for the ride?

Thank You,
Josh

You might want to do a search for the topic of GPS on the site.  There are several threads.

I can't afford gas but my truck should be able to pull them if you want to go.  Make a deal.....you cover gas and I'll get y'all there.

Can you quit talking about your lack of greenbacks in every other post you make. What about getting a real job or finding an old man with a little bank?

how much do you need , qt314?    LMAO

As far as GPS'....it all depends what you intend to do with them....which you may want to start another thread about.
I have a GARMIN 2720 on my quad.  It is more for the street.....but it keeps me from getting lost in the wild also.  It is not so good (so far as I have found out in FINDING places in the woods.....but it shows me a 'trail' how to get back where I was.  GSP Kurt has a GARMIN Etrex vista (I think) on his quad.......it may be more capable as far as a 'hiking/trailing/getting lost and getting back unit"...........Mine, however, can find almost any DENNYs in the USA!   (not real good when you are dying of thirst at Big Scrub............(but I can use the GPS screen to reflect the sun and signal
rescuers in a helicopter!!! LMAO)

Thank you all for your helpful comments.  I just found out that  I will not be going on the 11th but I wish I could.  I would like to go maybe another weekend.  I am usually always open to ride just about anywhere.
I also like meeting new people to get together to ride with.  So let me know when and where the next ride is

Josh

Hello jtbucfan,

I;ve got a Garmin GPS60CS.  It''s a fair size hand held unit that will
fit nicely on an atv. It's also has a color screen which is very helpful for
me.  It's perfect for atving and has all the bell's and whistle's.
I also have a Garmin Etrex Vista which is very good also but my model
does not have the color screen hense I bought the GPS60CS.
I would suggest doing searches online. You probably can beat Bass Proshops
prices.

We volunteer Trail Rangers will be there with a tent, table and a map of the new Trail System.  Please find time to stop by so that we may show you and explain the map and the progress that has been made.

In addition, if anyone needs a place to camp, I have room at my place in Hog Valley for 4-6 RV's or 6-8 tents.  Let me know.

Rides are always open to new members.  I won't be on this one and can't help you w/ time or directions.  Most group rides meeting time is 9am w/ a drivers meeting then off on the trail.  Have fun good luck trying to remember everyone you meet.

Hello

I just might be able to make it up sunday the 12th but I will not be able to go Saturday the 11th.  Would it be worth my time to go up sunday?   I dont want to get there and everyone be tired from riding all day Saturday.  How many people plan on riding both days?  I guess, the amount of people who would like to ride on sunday will be the deciding factor as to if I come up or stay.

Thank You,
Josh

If this ride mirror's any of the past group rides everyone will be packing up and going home Saturday night and Sunday.  There may be some ppl that aren't going on the group ride that might be up for a ride Sunday.  Usually the group rides are 40-70 miles on Sat.  Depending on how large the group is there are several things that slow the trip down.  It usually takes till just before dark when we get back to the parking lot.  Not sure if this ride will be like the others but if you're expecting any kind of organized group to ride with on Sunday you will most likely be dissapointed.

No one has said anything about the time we are meeting.  According to past rides it seems its around 9am.  That is what time my group will be there.  If there is anyone staying at the campground that would be willing to carry some fuel to Rodmans could they reply by tomorrow so we could exchange some information.  We stay in hog valley, I have enough fuel to make it to Rodmans & back, but not enough to do any riding while I am there,  (Banshee 409 loves gas).  I will have a laptop with me but I don't know if it will work up there or not until I get there.  I would appreciate it.

I'm still in. I guess we are meeting around 8:30 or 9am in the pit correct? I'll have my group who just wants to go on a good sized trail ride. Nothing fast or crazy. I've downloaded the new trail system but have no idea what I'm looking at. Looking forward to stopping by the ranger tent and getting an idea of which way to go to keep us in the allowed areas.

The coordinates for the approx. location are
N29.50151
W81.81543

Come across Rodman Dam Rd. from Hwy. 19. Do not come up FS 88. You will probably get stuck unless you have 4wd. Trust me.

Keith-
Yes, that's right adjacent to the pit. I assume we'll play in the pit for a while and then hit the trails.

There is virtually no cell service in the forest. I am bringing my FRS radios.

I will have 5 gals. extra on the trailer, and if you wish, I can bring another 5 gal. can with me.

it's not like your gonna get kicked out for riding on two wheels instead of four,,,,,I usually meet people in the parking area, and I will be in a '03 F150 with a 12' enclosed trailer behind it brewing coffee ;-)

I'll see if I can find a pic and post it of my ride so I can be identified.

Had a bunch of my wifes family meet up with us at Ocklawaha Resort so I rode at Eureka instead. Rode in the morning till it started raining, went and ate lunch and came back for some more. Had a good time although I think the highlight of my trip was seeing a bear run across 19 Sunday morning.

We got a chance to see 2 baby bears run across the trail while we were having a lunch stop.  It was cool for sure!  And the tree huggers say there's no wildlife because of us.

Were you able to get a pic of the bear?

maybe not the best news, but a willingness to work with us is the feeling I got from the day.  That to me is positive.

I still feel that the trails will be too dangerous if they are not made one-way, and some other things, but I do feel like they (USFS) are willing to listen.

Hey Jeffgre,

Great job guiding our bunch.  I believe a large time was had by all.
My odometer showed my Rubi covered 50 miles.
Enjoyed playing at Eureka Dam and stopping  at the 88 Store.

My buddy on the 400EX from North Carolina said the trip was well
worth it.

Thanks for letting us hook up with your group.

I got it all on my GPS and I may do a re-run  this Saturday.

 Thanks,
