Title: SARASOTA AREA ATV CLUB
Post by: MaineToo on January 23, 2004, 05:00:30 AM
How many people in the Sarasota area would join an ATV club that will be affiliated with Florida Trail Riders if I went to the trouble of starting one? Who would be willing to help me set it up?

If I get a good response I will start.

No. And I'd even say we could have meeting in Ellenton to split the difference. JP Igloo has an area we could use.

You might want to think about starting one in your area. If you want to I can send you information as I get it in reference to setting up a club.

We could always meet at a Dennys somewhere in Bradenton or possibly the mall parking lot.  Wednesday we have a ATV commitee meeting in North Port at 6pm any other day is good for me.

I think any and all of it is great. Give me a couple of days though. I want to see if we can get two things:

1. Some direction from FTR in reference to a meeting place. Maybe they have or use one.
2. A person from FTR to attend our first meeting.

Also I have the use of a large meeting room. Only problem is that the location sucks. It is on US 41 in Sarasota. Right by Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Hard to get to from the interstate although as a one shot deal who cares I guess. We don't have to use it all the time, maybe just for the first meeting. Hey, what about one of the motel/hotels near an intersate exit? Don't they often have meeting rooms that you can rent and sometimes use for free? I'll check in to all these possibilities in the Sarasota area and let you know by Thursday. A couple of you check out the motel meeting room situation around SR 64 and I-75. That OK with everyone?

BTW... rainy weekends suck!

As far as SMASR for a club name ...  I think it is a good suggestion but one of the topics for the first meeting needs to be the name for the new club. Everyone that plans to attend the first meeting bring a few name suggestions and we will look at them all together.

S.M.A.S.R   stands for southern mud and sport riders association of Florida. The of Florida stays hidden.
I agree with Mainetoo We all need to come up with ideas and names for the club. I have a listing of the bi-laws and so does muddbuggy. We will bring to the meeting.

Title: Re: SARASOTA AREA ATV CLUB

Kevin and I met briefly today. I currently have a copy of the by-laws you mention. There are some typos and things that need to be added and other things that need to be removed. I am working on them. It will be way more easy to get the by-laws where they should be BEFORE we adopt them then it will be AFTER we adopt them.

Anyone find a meeting place yet?

I work nights Mon - Fri. so a weekend meeting would be preffered by me. But with enough notice, I would take the night off for the first meeting. I just wouldn't be able to attend many after that. :)

Hey Vista

Welcome. Thanks for the offer for the website. I imagine we will take you up on it. We first have to have our preliminary meeting and decide on a club name.

ATTN: ALL
By-laws are ready!
I have an idea for a sponsor and meeting place. I-75 at the Clark Rd exit.
I have received the NOHVCC's (pronounced NOVAC) "Club Start-up Kit". It is well done and totally applies to the start up of our club. http://www.nohvcc.org/flash/index1.htm

Please keep Carlie Brucia and her parents in your prayers.

I'm in.  The Cracker barrel is on S.R. 64 in Bradenton.  It is just over the Manatee river/Ellenton outlet mall exit which would be for HWY 301. It is the next exit.  Cracker Barrel can be seen from the interstate just before the exit.

See you all there!

Are we still on for Thursday?  This topic has been pretty quiet!

Title: Re: SARASOTA AREA ATV CLUB
Post by: MaineToo on February 20, 2004, 07:46:16 PM
I have an idea!

Let's have our first meeting Saturday 2-28-04 1200 noon at Croom. We could meet in the picnic area of Day use area #2. Lots of parking there. We can meet for an hour and talk and eat lunch. Real informal... We can elect some officers so we can really get this started.

It's a Saturday so there shouldn't be scheduling problems like there are during the week. We can get some riding in and kick this off the right way.

I will set up the outline for what needs to be covered in our first meeting and we will set the date THEN for our next meeting. I will have time to talk to the sponsor I have in mind so maybe we can meet there for our second meeting.

Some things to think about for the first meeting.

1. Name for the club
2. What YOU can offer the club. Would you be willing to be an officer? Would you be willing to head a committee such as a Ride Planning Committee, Public Relations Committee, Etc.?
Do you have a special talent or resource such as being a lawyer (we will need to set up a non-profit corporation)?

Sorry to have been so quiet but I had the flu or whatever it is and it put me in bed for about a week.

Who wants to meet at Croom? If we get at least 15 people we can get started!

Please respond.

Thanks

We already said Thursday the 26 at Cracker barrel  ??? . I like to go to croom to ride with the kids and I do not think it is the proper place.

I vote to stick with the 26th.

The Cracker barrel is on S.R. 64 in Bradenton.  It is just over the Manatee river/Ellenton outlet mall exit which would be for HWY 301. It is the next exit.  Cracker Barrel can be seen from the interstate just before the exit.

Seein as mainetoo is the kinda brains behind this and has the bylaws we probly should set a time when he and others can be there.
Everybody seems to have really conflicting schedules, maybe a sunday might work for everybody ??? I know its ridin weather,  but if we really want to get this thing goin we should make alittle better effort? Im just as guilty!
Next Sun is the 29th. Does that work or no?

Heres the scoop!

Sarasota Cycles wants us to have our first meeting at Noon on Saturday the 20th. They are going to set us up with tables and chairs. But it gets better. They are going to put on a BBQ for us too!

I will bring several copies of the by-laws because we need more than one set of eyes to look at them.

We will hold nominations and elections for officers. We will name a couple of committees and ask for people to help.

See you all then!

Well, since the two guys that wanted this club the most and were the logical choices for officers of the club won't be there and there dosen't seem to be much interest I have contacted Frank and canceled. Too bad because I don't feel that I will be able to ask him again.

If anyone wants to give this a try in the future I have the by-laws and information from NOHVCC about how to start a club. Yours for the asking.

This should help to illustrate why so little happens when it comes to getting new OHV use areas and why the City of Northport, for example, won't have any problem closing ride areas. Three reasons; governent agencies that really can't be bothered. Bad press from stupid, useless deaths and injuries because of a lack of common sense. Lack of support for clubs that can create the needed momentum to change the perception the public has of us.

I was in Croom this past weekend and watched two idiot hot-rods DRAG RACE down the main road by day use area #2. A child was walking across the road and they went on each side of the kid at full throttle. We can all shake our heads as we see areas get closed and wonder why. Will Croom be next? If they had hit the kid it certianly would have given the state the upper hand to start that process.

Good luck!

C'mon MaineToo dont put the brakes on too soon we just have a schedule conflict, no big deal.  We just need to change the date  [smiley=BigSmile.gif]thats all. I still think there is a big interest in having a club locally.  If we build it they will come.  Check with Big Frank and see when would be a good date for all of us to get together at his place.  Preferably in about a month so everyone on here can make plans to attend. I think 2 weeks is plenty of notice. When you get back call Frank and set up a new date if you like.

Trying to set up a date that works with everyone? That will never happen. But I would have thought that the people that were so gung-ho about this could have made it or at least wait to go riding until Saturday afternoon.

Isn't Suzuki of Sarasota open on Sundays?.  Why not late on Sunday afternoon?

There are plenty of people interested,  I think a new date
would be ok.  Frank is a great guy, and is very interested in this club.  I was at the shop on thursday and talked to him
about this and he was very excited. I have 4 guys that were planning on coming.  Don't be so quick to throw in the towel,
once we have a couple of meetings things will go alot smoother. There is no reason why you can't ask him for a new date.  I'm sure he will accomidate!!!!!

Don
I know all the work you have put into this club and it hasnt even launched yet. Thats why we cant give up so easily.
You and I need to communicate more, yes two weeks is enough notice but if I had of known that you where going to set the date for the 20th of march I would have told you me and a bunch of other guys on here were planning a Ocala trip that weekend.  The cabins have already been paid for in advance.

move the date.  The 20th may be our spotlight in the Orlando Sentinel.  This could be a chance to highlight how far we must drive for the few areas left for us ATVers.  The more that show up, the better.  Remember, numbers are the only things that really matter to the politicians...so a decent report with photos of a bunch of properly attired riders may help our cause!

If Maine is not going to reply then we can start one without him. I'm sorry but just because everyone can't make a certain date is no reason to just throw in the towel.
Is anyone else up for going forward with this with or without MaineToo.

Hey Guys,

I just read this thread.  My family would be interested in joining.  We are just as busy as eveyone else but will participate as much as possible.  I think that is the key.  You can never accomodate everyone, so as long as there is a large group you should be able to have enough people present at each meeting to keep the ball rolling.

Just my 2 cents.

Mike if you want to carpool to the meetings we can save some of that almost $2/gal motion lotion!

ATV group asks for county's assistance to access state land for off-road
 riding

 By PAUL CATALÁ

NORTH PORT -- A local group of all-terrain vehicle owners has asked
Sarasota County to join its effort to get nearly 400 acres of state land
 put aside for off-road riding.

But George Tatge, beaches and natural areas manager for the county parks
and recreation department, said he's doubtful the county will help.

Tatge said he attended a meeting Tuesday of the ATV-Ad Hoc Committee, an
organization made up of area ATV riders and merchants, intending to
discuss the environmental damage for which ATVs have been blamed in North
 Port parks.

He said he was especially concerned with pollution, soil erosion, habitat
destruction, and litter at the Myakkahatchee Creek Park at Reistertown
Road and Estates Drive, and at county-managed Oaks Park near Sumter
 Boulevard and Interstate 75.

But group chairman John Wilson, owner of Action Power Sports in Nokomis,
told Tatge that the ATV committee isn't looking to ride in those two
parks and would instead like to see an alternate site set aside in the
 8,600-acre Myakka State Forest.

Tatge said Wednesday he felt the group had good intentions, but that he
did not expect the county to support its efforts.

A state forestry department report submitted to the governor Jan. 1 lists
390 acres of the pine tree-covered Myakka Forest as one of three
finalists to become an ATV recreational area.

At a discussion about the state report in April, the Sarasota County
Commission voiced opposition to the plan.

During this week's meeting, Wilson defended the use of the forest by
 off-road vehicles.

"A state forest is for the consumptive use of the public," he said,
noting that 33,000 off-road vehicles were sold in Florida in 2002, and
 110,000 are now registered.

He said the demand for off-road riding would continue to grow, and part
of a state forest is the place to do it.

"I hope you guys will realize the value of letting the state give us an
area to ride and get us off your parks," he said.

Setting aside part of the forest for riders would help prevent further
damage to Myakkahatchee Creek Park and The Oaks, he said.

"You'd get more people here (the forest), so people would quit riding in
places where they shouldn't be riding," he said.

Wilson said an ATV park would do less environmental damage than any one
of the dozens of golf courses built around the area.

I'll try to make it but 2 days notice isn't much time. I have some plans that I have to try and change.I'm in no way being negative here but this is very very short notice. I do aplaud you for your  efforts on this Don and I hope I can juggle things around and make it.

2 weeks notice wasn't enough either. They had this date open for us so I said let's do it. I doubt we would ever find a date that would make everyone happy.

What IS important is to get the club set up, elect officers, and get a by-laws comm. in place.

That is true but I was ready for that one. This is just so short. How are they going to know how much food to cook on such short notice? I am going to try and make it but just in case I can't then I will be at he next one. Thanks again for getting this whole thing rolling.

I can't make it. Neither can the 6 friends I was planning on bringing. We are all going to be at croom. I too appreciate all the hard work Mainetoo has done  [smiley=Clap.gif]

And I know that no matter what date was posted. There would be people that couldn't attend for one reason or another .... but 2 days notice just isn't sufficent in my book.

Anyways... good luck with the first meeting and maybe I'll be able to attend the next one :)

Maine,
You have been thanked numurous times for doing all that you have done.I feel (as do other members that I've talked to about this) that we need you involved with this. We all know that it is important to set up a club to fight for our rights as an ATV community. I understand your frustration with epople not be able to attend. I think that you understand that a 2 day notice is NOT enough time to get alot of people there. We are never going to be able to please eveyone or should I say set a date that eveyone can make. There are a few people on the site that knows Suzuki of Sarasota and can work on setting up a new date. What is your schedule and we'll try to work from there.

This is an old thread I don't mind seeing. Since I'm new its the first time I've seen it.
If there isn't enough support for a club maybe we can do something more informal. We all would like to be "clubbies" but unfortunatly we all can't spare alot of time. I'm sure interest is probrably seasonal also. We could start slow w/ a few get-togethers. Then see what happens ;D

I would be interested along with other members of my Family.

There is a club called "Sarasota Area Dirt Riders" and the Pres. Is Randy Faul, who is also the president of Florida Trail Riders. Just for your information. I know alot of people from Venice, Sarasota, North Port and Bradenton area that are members. But there is always room for more.
