Title: My first Rifle
Post by: big-daddy on November 05, 2005, 06:32:53 PM
I have an 8 year son that loves to shoot targets. He had his first BB gun at the age of 6, he learn safety and respect for firearm. He is asking for a real rifle to shoot. Being a hunter and owning many guns I don’t have a problem with it, just want to find the right one. www.crickett.com makes a 22cal for kids. The Ruger 10/22 it’s a little big for him right now. Have anyone ever shot one... Thanks

10/22 is an awesome .22 , Winchester makes a pump that is lightweight and breaks down in two peices. It also shoots shorts, longs and long rifles.

If you want to spend a little more money on the ruger 10/22 and make it lighter, Take at look at cables they have a couple pages of stuff for it in their catalog ( www.cabelas.com ). Check out 243,low powered but legal to hunt with!

You can also have the stock shortened on just about any gun to fit the shooter. Then later on it can be re-fitted with a full size stock. BTW I think I got my first .22 at about the same age and worked into a 20 gauge by the time I was 11. Learn the repect young and it will stay with you for a lifetime.

I got my 410 last christmas, it was my first. Guns are awsome, especially when the right person is using them. :)

Thats Great to see that some youths are actually learning the correct way to handle firearms!!!
I bought my nephew a .22 That is called a "surviver" , It breaks down like a shot gun, but the draw length was right! It seems to be a good shooting gun , but until we knew forsure that he would stay interested this was the way to go with out being too expesive.
However, If he`s going to stick with "Hunting", I would recomend the 10/22, Have the stock shortened to fit his draw length.Allthough you will spend a little more now.  You will be happier with the performance in the long run.       Good luck which ever you deside on ;D

Don't know when I got my first .22, but I was taught respect for the firearm from the beginning,,,,don't even think I had a b gun first.  The first .22 I had is ancient, but a single shot bolt action winchester I think,,,still got it and it shoots straight.

very light, and a good learner.

Maybe he'd like to borrow it if I could find it?

safety, safety, SAFETY!!!

but yes.....guns should be owned and used.
My first .22 was a bolt action Marlin. Clip held 7 rounds.
Still got it as a matter of fact.  Now, I mostly shoot pistols....
Glad you found a suitable rifle for your son........he won't forget it.

The cricket is a great gun for starters. Single shot, bolt action, short, safe and easy to learn and shoot. Great choice.

Big Daddy-

I strongly recommend both he and you enroll in a hunter safety course. There is much to be learned there.

Thank GSPkurt, been there done that! The range that we go shooting you have to past a written test on safety and then they give you a photo ID to enter.
