Title: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: wilburz on October 11, 2005, 07:20:42 AM Any suggestions on buying a GPS for under 200 bucks? I had a Garmin 12 but lost it in the woods last week.

For under $200, you probably won't get much memory for maps. WalMart and BestBuy have the Garmin eTrex Legend for $169.00. I am a serious Garmin fan. The only downfall is the screen is fairly small.

The old one I had would lose connection when traveling faster than a walking pace.

Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: GSPKurt on October 11, 2005, 01:06:28 PM I've got the Venture, and assuming it has the same antenna, I have absolutely no trouble with mine in car, boat or ATV. It is a great unit, just that the screen is very small.
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: cubnfrank on October 11, 2005, 08:40:41 PM I just bought the ETREX Legend, I like it. It's very easy unit to use.. If you buy it on wallmart online. You can save some bucks
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: backinsaddle on October 11, 2005, 09:39:08 PM If you would be willing to go just over $200, you might want to consider the Garmin Rino 120. GPS, radio with 5 mile range, and if you have 2 or more they locate each other so you can navigate to another rider. A few people had them on the group rides I went on and I thought they were pretty slick
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: Bush Hog on October 11, 2005, 09:40:53 PM I have the cheapest Etrex they make. Paid $100 for it. I use it on my four wheeler, and I use it on my 78mph boat with no problems. It may not have all the bells and whistles as more expensive ones, but hell, I don't know how to use all the stuff that's already on this one. If it tells me where I am, where I've been, and where I want to go, I'm good. ;D

It's not under a hundred bucks but you know what they say. You get what you pay for. Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: Ida_Mann on October 12, 2005, 07:39:03 AM etrex legend, I strap it on my gastank with a bungee and it never looses signal or battery off of 2 AA's for an entire weekend of riding (usually about 5-7 hours a day)
and I have the entire topo map of ONF loaded into it without problem. Id@ Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: Honda250ex on October 12, 2005, 09:12:05 AM I love Garmin they are the best!!!!!!

(It's what guided his a$$ out of Big Cypress when he sank his bike & cell phone last year):

Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: scrambledeggs on October 14, 2005, 08:09:11 AM I have and etrex legend with topo and a ram mount. I love it. It is the finest, cheapest mapping unit out there. I got a few tracks from a nice guy on this forum in the ONF and completed a 60 mile ride without ever getting lost. It was my first time riding in Ocala. This GPS made the trip possible. I found the best price at Walmart.com

Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: PureLogic on October 14, 2005, 09:53:31 PM Willburz I dropped this in the water when I was stranded in big cypress and it floated right to the top. I think overall it is a very rugged unit. The compartment for the batteries has got an o ring seal. The only thing MrsPurelogic pulled up the wrong one. I got mine at best buy for $165 and had a $30 dollar rebate. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000064184/104-6392059-6071159?v=glance&n=172282&s=electronics&v=glance I absolutely love it and it is very very accurate and I use at highway speeds sitting in the cup holder and never loose a signal.
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: PureLogic on October 14, 2005, 09:55:59 PM For tracing steps and finding your way back to camp it’s the best. I would have to truly say this GPS saved my life while I was stranded out in Big Cypress. First time there and was all by myself and 18 miles out of the big bear Island check in point.

I never had to buy any of the maps or updates. And it has “some” of the state highways and roads already stored on it and it records everything.
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: wilburz on October 15, 2005, 04:00:25 PM I think you are part homing pigeon or sumpin!
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: wilburz on November 21, 2005, 07:12:30 AM Got my legend from walmart.com on Friday. A little small but works well. 139.00 plus shipping. Best deal I could find. Thanks for the feedback.
Title: Re: Help buying a moderately priced GPS Post by: Ida_Mann on November 21, 2005, 07:36:19 AM it's a good one,,,use mine all the time.
