Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: GSPKurt on August 20, 2005, 09:35:02 PM I just bought a Warn 3.0 and plan on mounting the contactor in the gasketed box by the tail light and caulking the hole for the wires with silicone caulk. Anything you can do to keep it dry is good. Maybe make a plastic box and seal it up real good? :dunno.gif

Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: jwscroll on August 21, 2005, 08:25:03 PM It doesn't matter if you place it inside or outside, Warn makes the contractor watertight and I've tested it ALOT. Just make sure you can get to it if you need to work on it.
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: GSPKurt on August 21, 2005, 09:43:31 PM Are you sure? Another guy at work here put a 2.5 on his Eiger and has already fried the contactor after less than a year!
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: BCConviber on August 22, 2005, 08:13:58 AM I have a 2.5 on my Grizz in the box under the seat. It fills with water all the time, and I've never fried it.
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: GSPKurt on August 22, 2005, 10:56:33 AM Thanks for the info. He must have done something else to fry it, then.
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: PureLogic on August 22, 2005, 08:59:12 PM Heavy usage or over current situations tend to make not so water friendly. The new Brute force 750 mounts there in the open in the back. It already has mounting brackets and all .
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: SWAMP_DONKEY on August 22, 2005, 10:15:50 PM ooohhh yea I have a 4000lb warn on my ranger and a 3000lb warn on my king quad. Jwsrcoll is 100% right (that kills me to say) about them being water proof.
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: gtnwood on August 24, 2005, 10:32:30 AM Wow, a lot of great responses all of a sudden. I feel much more water tight now. Thanx ya'll
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: bbf on August 25, 2005, 02:33:41 PM under the seat never had any problems
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: GSPKurt on August 26, 2005, 10:03:24 PM The installation instructions I got with the winch (Warn 3.0) say to mount in as high and dry a location as possible. What do your instructions say? :dunno.gif
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: jwscroll on August 29, 2005, 06:11:41 AM If I remember correctly the instructions do mention that, but honestly when that machine gets ridden the contractor spends more time under water than the winch because of where it's located.
Title: Re: winch suggestions please Post by: gtnwood on August 30, 2005, 01:16:21 PM I have since relocated the contactor to the box under the seat and have yet to get into any substantial water. I will repost if it is a problem once I need to use it in the water. Also my install. manual also says to mount it high as possible out of waters way. I think that maybe the contactor getting fried is a result of actually activating the winch while the contactor and/or winch is wet or under water.
