Title: Upgrade to message board.
Post by: mrbones on May 27, 2005, 09:07:41 AM
I'll upgrading the message board next Tuesday so there will be times when the board is down during this process. It's not just an upgrade, but a conversion to a new board system. The new board will be much faster and will have more features to offer in the future. Plus it won't delete messages without warning!

But, since this is a conversion, I'm not sure what exactly is going to happen. The current board has a lot of hacked in upgraded features that can cause problems. At a bare minimum, I want all logins, messages and attachments working. I don't know what will happen with the instant messages either. Hopefully this won't happen, but don't be surprised if they are wiped clean. We'll have to see what happens.

Thanks for your support!

Mr. Bones, Question: how does this site pay for itself? or does it. I always wondered because I know this thing does not operate for free. Whats up?  Thanks in advance ???

In an attempt to ease any anxiety about the conversion I thought I might wax philosophical for a moment: ;D

Socrates was the original rebel. He was persucuted and killed for teaching others to question authority.

About to be put to death for his beliefs and teachings, Socrates was told he would be spared being put to death if he were willing to recant all that he was known for teaching.
Being a man of conviction and integrity he refused even though he knew his death was imminent. When asked if he were scared about his upcoming death, his reply was to (holding true to his teachings) to ask why should I be scared? None of can say for sure what it will be like, so why be afraid? It is foolish to be afraid of the unknown. He said that he saw it as an adventure.

Put shortly:

The only constant is change. We shouldn't worry about new things since we don't exactly know what will happen.

I'm just glad I finally got a chance to use some of the useless information I was forced to pay for in college  ;D

:o I hope this don't effect my new postings on forums on here.

I think  you should backup your web site in case something goes wrong.

Thanks for all the encoraging words and offers of help. I've got the new board setup and ready to go. Just have to put both in maintenance mode and start the conversion. I'll do that tomorrow and we'll see what happens. The old board is supposed to be unaffected so if all else fails, I can go back to it.

Well, it was a complete disaster. After 8 hours, I've scrapped everything and went back to the old board. The new one is completely corrupted and has to be redone. The conversion process managed to destroy all the attachments and tried to encrypt them. It created a 17gb directory that had to be deleted. So, I think they are all gone. Sorry. I'll try again later this week.

Thanks for the post gery.

I tried it again and got the same result. My guess is the converter is bunk. I'll enquire about it with the creator, but after today, I won't want to mess with this again at least for another week or more.

What happened to the members only section for the contributing members?

It's still there, but I have to go through and grant access to the contributing members. There's 72 members so I'll start on the list today.

Looks good either way, thanks for the site!!

I fixed the stars issue. I want to come up with something different for CMs. I'll have to do that later.

It looks like the location field got garbled during the conversion. You have to edit in your profile. I haven't figured out how to make it display next to people names'. But, I'll get it sorted out.

Some posts have duplicate attachments. Don't know why. No biggie.

The calendar has been reset. People will have to add new events again. It now shows birthdays and holidays.

The chat room is gone. I have to find another one to install.

The member map is history. I really liked that feature of the old board. I'll see if I can find another one for this board.

I also need to install more smilies. I liked the ones on the old board.

Mr. Bones great work.  I've spent time working w/ computer glitches and know how frustrating it can be.  The site has some great features.  Only one I'm missing is chat.  No biggie, thanks for all you've done.

I  dont  like  the  way  it  works  now.  After  a  post  it  jumps  back  to  the  forums.  Every  time  I  log  on  now  I  have  to  sign  in.  It  takes  more  time  now  and  that  sux.  All  the  fun  is  gone.  Change  it  back  or  make  it  work  like  it  did.  Please !!

I got the Chat backup. It works different than the old one. You can't see who's logged on like the old one either. But it does work.

Still have to get the member map backup and add more smilies.

I can't get the chat room to open.  It worked for me once.  Also, in the last 15 minutes I've tried to send out a couple PM's and leave this message.  When I tried to reply to PM's it told me my session had timed out and I needed to log out and log back in.  I tried for 5 minutes to log and out it wouldn't let me.

I finally was allowed to log out and log back in.  Since then I've logged in no less than 10 times in the last 5 minutes.  Every time I go to send a PM I have to log in.  I came to this spot to leave this message and again I had to log in.  On each case when I had to log in I had written this message and it wasn't till I was done that it erased my message and told me to log in.

The new system looks great but it's not user friendly and has quite a few bugs that still need some work.

Thanks!

As it turns out, a lot of people couldn't post a message. The permissions got all messed up during the upgrade. So newbies could only reply to a topic, etc.

So hear this, unless you are a guest (not registered), you should be able to start new topics, start polls, see attachments, reply to topics, report posts, receive notifications, add an event to the calendar, search, etc. All the basic stuff.

Let me know if anyone has any problems.

Unfortunately, the chat room was causing some errors. It had to go. I'll have to look for an updated chat room when it's available.

Those with login problems; what browser are you using?

I had the same logout error using Firefox. I just went into Tools, Options, Cookies,  View Cookies, and deleted the ATVFlorida.com cookies. The problem went away.

Mr Bones-

I am having problems viewing (some) attachments.  I scanned through this thread looking if someone has a similar problem, i saw nothing, my mistake if i missed..

For example Dreth's thread titled "Dreth AND T2Raptor are BACK!!!!!!!!!" (link (http://www.atvflorida.com/forum/index.php/topic,1697.0.html))

In that thread i see 4 attachments.
I see the first post's attachment, 5th's, 6th's, and 25th's.  From reading the other posts in that thread by him, i assume that there are attachments....  So its only showing a select few.  For the ones that don't show up it looks like a normal post without an attachment, it doesnt even say there is an attachment.

I am using FireFox:Mac on OS X, i also tried Internet Explorer:Mac, and Safari.  I also double checked to see if i was logged in while on the page.  Also, i checked my account preferences to see if there was some attachment viewing option, i saw nothing.  Also, i am waiting untill it says "Done" at the bottum left, so i know its done loading the page.

Edit: Just tested this on my other computer (Windows XP Pro, Firefox browser), Same results. This is not the only thread, i just used it as an example.  There has been a few others.

Is it just me?

If it's not an attachment, it's an image linked to the thread through the (http://) tags. If those don't show up, the link is dead.

I dont think he was using [img] tags, i clicked quote on some of the posts and it didnt have them in the quoted text.

From my post above, can anyone see the images i said i couldnt see?
