From the Moment a Child is Abducted, Every Second Counts. Nextel, in cooperation with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA), is proud to offer customers free AMBER Alerts to any Nextel phone. Issued in the most serious child abduction cases, an AMBER Alert is an emergency broadcast communication designed to instantly mobilize the entire community to assist in the search for, and safe return of, an abducted child. Official alerts will be sent as a text message to active Nextel phones and wireless devices that have been signed up for the service.
