Title: Bombing practice at the centennial trail Post by: Starbuc71 on September 27, 2015, 09:15:09 AM Well, after a 3 hour drive yesterday, we get to the trailhead off 40 only to be met by Rangers and county workers stating that this week the military was doing bombing exercises and that we could not ride the trail. I was mad but understood. Luckily wandering wire grass was close. For craps and giggles I checked the official ONF website this morning wondering for I was the idiot that maybe should have checked for an alert. Lucky I checked since the last alert update was urban flooding from 2011...lol

Is it closed all week? My wife and I were thinking of going up there this Thursday.
You should have went up to the north trails at Salt Springs and I think you would have had a better ride. I just don't care for the wandering wire grass trail. If this ever happens again, go west on US40 from that trail head just a short ways and you'll see a fire tower. Turn right there, I think it's forest road number 11, and that road will take you up to hwy 316. Turn left a mile or two and a trail head will be on the right. Unfortunately the Trail has to be shutdown when the Navy is using ordinance that requires the "expanded safety zone". I've been informed that they can only do this 10 or less times a year. I will reopen a new Centennial Trail thread and try to keep it updated as to when bombing is going on as well as other things. Like currently there is logging operations just off the HWY 40 Trail Head. Again, sorry to miss this.
