Title: Street Helmets
Post by: digginfool on August 08, 2010, 09:16:49 PM
The parents of my kid's friends got in an accident in Coral Springs last night.  Neither were wearing helmets.  The mother died at the scene and the father is in critical condition.  As is usually the case, victims probably would have had far less serious injuries if they had been wearing helmets.  I know it's not cool to wear a helmet on a Harley but is it worth this?  These kids are 15, 12 and 8 and quite possibly about to be orphans.  I know they were already struggling financially.  What's their future now?  If you love your family, keep your damn helmet on at least until you're out of town.  It really can happen to you.

Quick story related to helmets

Almost 3 years ago  my brother bought a busa.  He has been riding since we had three wheelers 20 years ago.  4 street bikes later never wearing a helmet (him) I tell him that if he wanted me to ride with him he had better get a helmet so he bought a SHOEI......just days later he was merging onto I275 south from I-4 West (malfunction junction) and was riding with a group of so called friends.  Some how he ended up merging onto I 275 cut all of the lanes and flipped off from the interstate onto a road below.  It was close to a 15' drop onto pavement.  Prior to the drop he rolled on top of the concrete barriers only to hit the bolts that would secure the street lights to the barriers (if they were there).  He crossed 4 sets of 4 bolts and had HUGE gashes in his leg, arms, back and HELMET.  The helmet took the blow good although the bolts went through.  He had some injury on the head from them as well as broke almost every bone in his body from the fall.  HE IS BACK AT WORK TODAY and has been for the last 2 years.  THIS HELMET saved his life..had he not of been wearing it he would had never made it alive, not even to the pavement.

WEAR YOUR HELMET people!!!!!!!!!!!!

prayers for the family. Hopefully the father will make a quick, full, recovery.

I rode street bikes for a number of years and a helmet saved my life. I was riding north (yes I was speeding) when a guy pulled out from a parking lot to my right and stopped fully blocking my lane while crossing to the south bound lanes. There was a car in the right lane. To the left was a median and two lanes of oncoming traffic. I slowed as much as I could without laying it down - I knew an instant stop  from that speed into his driver door meant death - and hit his fender. The bike and I flipped over his car. I hit so hard it broke one of the handle bars, the forks bent back and crushed the radiator, and my shoes flew off in different directions - 1 was never seen again. I went up and over, flew approx 65 feet, landed ON MY HEAD, and rolled into oncoming traffic where a car screeched to a halt just inches from my face. I walked away thanks to the protection of a helmet.
I cringe when I see people riding without them. I know they aren't cool and all, but I personally wouldn't ride without one. It can/will save your life. You can ride at less than 10 MPH, bust, hit your head and die. with a helmet you'll be fine.
I agree wear your helmet, or don't ride.
