I would be willing to do it with a years notice . My family and I are planning a trip in the Fall to include the Virginias and Tennessee . It would be cool for some of us to make a real road trip North .....what do you think ?

Afew weeks back on ATV TV there was a place I think in Tenn that you can ride ATV's on the road. Ride in, fill up with gas, and head back out on the trails. Also, said they had cheap hotel rooms.

And how far is it to drive from here? The area in question (N.E. TN) is a 13 hr drive normally however, when pulling trailers and with a group it would probably be 15 hrs. The ideal way to do this is to meet in a central location and put as many quads on trailers that are being pulled by a diesel and then a lesser amount of quads on the gas powered vehicles that way we could convoy together and make better time. I just returned from there as we have property about 2 miles from Callalantee ATV. It used to be a horse riding area but was changed to ATV"S approx. 2 years ago. They have sevaral camp sites and plenty of room for tent camping. There is also a nice cabin for rent has two bedrooms with lots of beds in them, full kitchen etc. They don't have septic hook up for R.V.'s yet, but if you need to dump can go the the campground behind the welcome center in town. They have a mandatory helmet rule for minors, although I highly recommend it for everyone due to the terrain.
Motels in town: Americourt Empire For J.D. there is a large mudhole area right in the camp area. There are many miles of trails, I haven't been on all of them, some are very steep, scenery is beautiful, when riding there just a week ago saw numerous deer. There is also another riding area in the county called Crackers Neck it is owned by the same person and allows riding. I haven't been to this one as it is used more by the jeeps and have been told it has big rocks. If that is what you are into. They do allow jeeps etc. at Callalantee but most go to the Crackers Neck area. If this group ride is during the July 4th we will also be at our property and riding. The wife will post some pictures shortly from there...if you need any more information about the area let us know. I think we have a picture of the cabin they rent. and we might be able to post the trail map, although you really have to pay attention when there as it is confusing. This is an old narrow guage railroad bed that runs from Abington to almost the top of white top mountain, (over 5000 Ft.) It is open to bicycles and horses...Sorry no atv's..you can rent a mountain bike from one of the dealers in town and they also have transportation for you to the top of the trail. 22mile ride back..mostly downgrade....very beautiful ride...through forst and over some of the railroad bridges...Ya it sounds rough but if my old fat butt can do it..3 times so far you'all can. Boone, N.C., (tourist town) is only about a 30 min. ride to the east lots to do there. Grandfather Mountain which can be found on the internet. Lots of shopping etc....Yes I said shopping for the ladies beleive me I have had to take my wife around to the shops. For those of you interested in Blue Grass and country music there are several places to enjoy it for low cost on Friday and Saturday nights. Also note for those that like to partake in the evening..this is a dry county, you can get some beer in the county but that is it. you have to go to Abingdon, Va. Post by: indianjoe on July 27, 2005, 04:56:37 PM Also wanted to mention the best wys to get there especially if you have a trailer or large motorhome like the Grizz, (and I'm not trying to take over just want to share my information as I drive there at least 1-2 times a year.)
Fastest route is up I-95 to I-26, then north to Colombia and hit I-77 north. go north of Charlotte to S.R. 421, go west this is now four lane all the way to Boone, N.C., stay on 421 through Boone, (hardest climb is going into Boone) and it will take you right into Mountain City. Another route is I-95, to I-26 then north on I-26 to Asheville, I-26 is now 4 lanes north of Asheville, you can get of I-26 around Elizabethton and come up on 67 around lake, pretty ride, kinda curvy, instead of getting off at Elizabethton you can go to I-81 and then go north to exit for Damascus, Va. head east on 58 to Damascus and follow signs to Mountain City. There are other routes very pretty but curvy etc, like up 321 off of I-77, if you are up or that enjoy. Between now and then I will work on getting more info. on other things for everyone and list numbers and locations so if there is something you are interested in the information will already be there, and you can make your decision as to what you want to do. Post by: indianjoe on November 27, 2005, 02:41:52 PM Yes the town o Mountain City has fireworks at the park downtown, just 2-3 miles from riding area for free and events at the park all day long. also the town of Damascus, Virginia, about 8 miles from the riding area has fireworks and live bands and food usually the day before the 4th. Both are very family oriented and put you alot closer to the fireworks and activites then what you find here.

Just a reminder to everyone these trails are in the mountains. rocky, and some steep, you pick how steep you want to go. I know I headed up one with the wife following and I was almost divorced before I got her turned around and back down. Lot of trails, since they have been loggin in there, also every time I've been we have seen deer. Bring helmets etc. Two wheel drive do fine on most trails, wife has polaris trail boss and it does fine on trails, of course she doesn't do the hard ones, and some of the hard ones, I saw I don't want to try Title: Re: If we had a year to plan .... It is awesome held in the town park, live bands food vendors and fireworks. Then you can go to Mountain City foreworks on the 4th and there festivites in their park . For those wanting a motel, the two closest are the Mountain Empire and the Americourt, try this link: http://www.johnsoncountychamber.org/JCChamber/chamber/membership/members_current_lodging.html There are a few good restaurants in town, one of the best in my opinion for breakfast and lunch is the Laural Bloomery Store which is north on 91 from Callalantee ATV, don't drive to fast or you will miss it, it is a country store with a small kitchen and dining area, awesome breakfast, and awesome hamburgers. Of course part of the fun is cooking out. Those who want a change of pace can try the Virginia Creeper Trail in Damascus. Bicycle ride on the old coal train railroad bed. Several bike vendors are in town and you rent bikes and pay for the shuttle to take you to the top. approximately 22 miles, down hill at slight grade very pretty. I can't ride until at least Aug 16, so he and I will be heading out west soon for 3-4 weeks. I still have two grandmothers to go see, plus some cousins, then some sites along the way.
