Title: 2009 Hurricane Season
Post by: digginfool on October 06, 2009, 10:07:59 PM
Is it just me or does the NHC seem to be doing everything it can to use as many storm names as possible?  This latest storm is the 4th or 5th storm this season that lasts only a day or two.  The second storm of the season lasted only a few hours before being downgraded after it went ashore.  You almost have to believe there is complicity between the NHC and the insurance industry.  At the very least, the NHC is trying to keep mud off their face by fulfilling their pre-season predictions.  It's kind of hard to keep those funds rolling in if you miss the mark by a factor of 3 or 4.  The last storm, Grace, is the most blatant example.  There has never been a tropical storm in that area and even in the discussions they alluded to the fact it may not even be possible since sea surface temps were below 20 C and the 'storm' was so far out to sea they had no direct observations.  Sounds like BS to me.

I noticed this as well, I think there just padding up worthless disturbances to name storms so they would look so bad on there prior predictions.  ;)

It's possible that our satellite weather systems have imporved to the point where we can ID bad weather sooner and in more-remote locations of the sea(hence, we never noticed one in that area). But, more likely it's yet another symptom of the Wussification of America. Keep up the drama, keep them scared and they'll need us to protect and serve.

Do you think it is ok for me to take down my shutters?  Every time I hear of a named storm I put them up and then run around Publix like a maniac grabbing all the bottled water, spam, batteries, flashlights and canned soup.

The media definately likes to hype these storms up.

It's been a pretty quiet season so far. Hasn't it?

Quiet and I am glad.

I was hoping insurance rates would drop as a result but, it doesn't look like it. Now, I hear this morning that Nationwide was pulling out of Florida and canceling something like 60k policies!!!

Anyone else hear this?

Yep ,
And i'm hoping its stays that way.
We cant afford a single hurricane making land fall this season or the next few for that matter.
When is the official end of hurricane season anyway?

Its been quiet because Obama turn the hurricane machine down. Bush had it turned all the way up while he was in office trying to drown out the coloreds.
