i was 224 and went down to 165 in 3 months(not good).
your body is a machine. believe me i can write a book onthis stuff. but in lehmans terms less in-more out. but there is a thin line between using fat as energy(to burn it) and going to far and using the glycogen in your muscle as energy-hence losing muscle mass. what i would recommend is fitness training of course(weightlifting) followed by cardio- the extent of your cardio depends on your goal. you MUST eat 5 to 6 times a day to keep your metabolism going and also keep you not hungry. of course stay away from high sugar products late in the day(soda,candy,rice-basicly carbs) and eat alot more protein. i would go with a 50-35-15 split. 50-protein, 35-carbs,15-fat.) the atkins diet i am sorry doesnt work. you cant deprive yourself from carbs completely. sooner or later you give in. again its hard to go in two directions at once. i would focus more on weightlifting and less on cardio.

timing is everything . if you can  run in hte morning your resting metabolic rate will be higher throughout the day and you'll burn more calories. if you cant make sure you do it after weightlifting. at your age your testosterone levels are through the roof. just look at the weights and you'll grow.  :D

yeah man all it takes is dedication. you dont see resolts in a week or two, you gotta at least give it a couple months to start seeing major resolts. i see it all the time in the Corps, people pt every other day in the morning but still get fat. it was happening to me, but its not just getting out and doin stuff it a lifestyle if you want to get in shape and stay that way. the best thing i can tell you is buy some mens fitness magizen, not the ones with the steriod freaks on the cover, but the ones that talk about loosing fat and stuff. start there take what you like out of there and use it. some stuff doesnt work for every body some just use what you think will work for you.

lol well being 14 at 5'10 im growin alright LOL and the atkins is sh*t as in a diet. It is horrible for you to deprive your body of carbs. That is what your body burns off of. After that it is fat and after that you may as well say bye bye cause your running off protein. The only way carbs are bad is if you just let them sit then they turn to fat. And then eating too much protein will result in kidney stones. 1 gram of protein is equal to 4 calories. 1 gram of fat is equal to 9 calories. 55% of your daily diet should be carbs, 10-15% should be proteins then 20-25% should be fats.

That is what i learned in personal fitness.

lmk if you want to gain muscle your gonna need alot more than 15% protein inyour diet. remember roughly 1 gram per body weight. 160lbs equals 160 grams if you want to gain muscle(gotta feed the beast)

I'm in the same boat as you LMK... I had a breakdown yesterday... so my azz will be back in the gym starting today!

This worked for me back when I lost the 40.... stay low on the carbs.... eat  A LOT of protein! Do 10-15 minutes of cardio, then do as much weight training as you want, follow that up with another 20 minutes or so of cardio. Gaining muscle raises your metabolism and of course, tones everything up.

This is what I did for lean muscle mass back when I was still bodybuilding it is quite a bit of work but well worth it in the end. First off get yourself a good multi vitamin....like Centrum. I am taking for granted that you will be doing some kind of exercise be it weight training, running, riding whatever just so long as your doing something. You'll need to check around online to get the exacts for grams of protein per serving for lean meats like chicken, lean beef, turkey etc.....tuna fish is a good source too just make sure it's the kind in Water not oil. Now on a daily basis you'll need to consume 1.5-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight(yes that is a bunch of meat!) and .5-.75 grams of carbs per pound all broken into about 6 meals evenly spaced through the day. You can also use protein shakes to replace meals if you have a problem eating that often. Your carbs should consist of potatoes, rice, veggies etc. just no sugar carbs. Lastly try to drink as much water as possible every day to eliminate the sodium from your system.....2 gallons minimum the more the better. You'll lose a lot of water weight and get cut real fast even if you only cut out the sodium and drank lots of water because the less sodium you take in and more water you drink will cause your body to retain less water but make sure your taking in plenty of it becasue it will also cause you to get dehydrated much easier. Feel free to give me a call and we can get more in depth. ;)

Just to give you an example I went from 210 and 16% BF to 230 and 10% BF in about six months doing this. I also lost 15 pounds of water weight in the first month just by cutting out the sodium and drinking 3+ gal. of water every day.

In all seriousness, isn't there a point where you can drink too much water?  I've heard somewhere that drinking too much water will flush some of the good stuff out of your system and ruin your kidneys.  True?

The low sodium goes work  ;)
Jeff and I did the Michael Thurmond's 6 week body make over, and the food is all natural  :o NO Preservatives, NO salt, yeast, sugar, or dairy  >:( AND YES AT LEAST 100 OZ OF WATER EVERYDAY! and you have to eat every 3 hours.
Very tuff!  We stuck to it about 80% for about 2 years.  When the hurricanes hit I threw it out the window.  We are trying to get back into it somewhat.  Anyway I learned a lot from it and we still do not own a salt shaker  ;D  I learned to cook with peppers and spices to make up for the salt.
I know your young but just think "All Natural", you can make your own french fries and grilled chicken fingers  ;D

You can find out your bodys chemistry by take this test....  Body Blueprint, it will tell you when to eat carbs, protein & fruit together.  I can have protein & fruit in the mornings and protein and a carb in the afternoon etc.  I also would cook 2 turkey breast on Sundays for our protein snacks all week.

Now after typing this I ask myself.....why am I not doing more of this again? LOL
Look out Jeff Guess what's for dinner  ;D

When it comes to drinking water... here's a good guide line to help you be sure you are drinking enough. The minimum you should drink a day... is half of your body weight in ounces. I weigh about 130.. so ideally I should drink at least 65oz of water a day.

5'10 and 160? I'd want to gain weight  :P Start lifting a lot of weights, but keep it on a scheduale so you hit each muscle at least once a week. Eat lots of lean cold cuts, and lean meats. You won't really loose a gut by eatling differently, you loose it be working out, while having a low fat high protein diet. If your gut is your main thing you want to work on, then work on lower back/ abs 3 times a week. You can also do a bunch of crunches before any time you work out. I ussualy do about 250 crunches before any workout, but still have a gut  :-\ . If you have AIM or something like that I can help you out more on that.

Title: Re: Need some help on losing weight
Post by: gery350 on June 16, 2005, 12:25:46 PM
there is no such thing as target weight loss. you lose body fat proportionally. you can do a miilion crunches  aday and still have a gut. you'l have a hell of a 6 pack but it will be hiding behind the fat. you need to burn body fat to expose the abs. the only way to do that is to get your body to use fat as energy. remember your body goes to your fat reseves at about 70% of your mhr(maximum heart rate) get the heartrate up and start burning fat and before yo know it you'll be there.

weight watchers isnt bad but your basicly paying a premium for food and for people to tell you the obvoius-to lose weight you have to exercise and eat less.

id rather take that money and invest it into a membership at a gym. Whats the average cost of a membership to a gym?

Title: Re: Need some help on losing weight
Post by: gery350 on June 16, 2005, 01:02:31 PM
all ican tellya is to shop around. look at convenience-location-type of people, equipment, etc. you want to feel comfortable and want to go there.  also shop around for prices. some will give you memberships without contracts. sometimes the local gyms are better than national chains like la fitness.

My gym (YMCA) has an awesome price for people under 18. It's only around $19... but does vary by location. I recommend going to a few local gyms for trial days (they are either free, or only a few dollars). That way you can test out thier equipment before going and signing a contract and having to pay the joiners fee.. etc.

Be carefull about local gyms, they can close up overnight  :o a friend went to work out at a place down the street and was there the day before and it was empty :o no refunds on that yearly membership  :-[
Maybe stick to a YMCA and see how you like it  ;)

A good easy meal that I used to eat a lot of is Tuna Salad. I usually would try to make enough for quite a few meals at a time. The recipe goes like this....8 cans of drained Tuna, 3 heaping tbsp of sweet relish, 1 tbsp mayo, 3 tbsp of mustard,1 dozen hard boiled egg whites with only 6 yokes and 1lb box of elbow maccaroni. This should make about 6-8 meals but it does get old after a while.

If your serious about losing fat and gaining muscle I would sugggest a medium cardio workout(running, aerobics, swimming, teabo) something to get your heart rate up for about 45 min to an hour. Then right after that hit the weight room for a heavy lift session.
What are you training for? Wrestling, football, or is this more about changing your image? (Which by the way there is nothing wrong with, a whole bunch of us did the same thing.) This will determine what type of diet you need to stick to.
Protien shakes are usually a must for the serious athlete.

Curtis, at your age all you need to do is a couple hundred sit ups and push ups every other day and in 8 weeks you will look like a mini schwartznegger ;) maybe a little cardio for the old ticker ;D

actually cardio should always be done after fitness. the (i forgot the name but i think its lactic) acid in your muscles that promotes catabolism is higher after cardio. if you read up on it you'll see that everyone recommends cardio after fitness.

actually it really shouldnt matter when you do it. The way to prevent lactic acid from pooling is doing a good cool down. And mainly im doing this for personal image and baseball to.

if you have a cool down period its not as bad but not immediately following a fitness workout.  if you want to focus on muscle mass you ALWAYS do weight training first. if you want to lose weight then it doesnt matter which one you do, but you DO compromise your weight training if you do it right after a cardio session.

You deff. want to do all your cardio after lifting weights, b/c when you lift weight you burn up the carbohydrates in your system, so then when you do your cardio your burning fat.  Also you won't be able to gain alot of muscle and loose weight at the same time because when your trying to loose weight you want to try and burn maybe 500-700 calories a day more than your taking in, and the will be about 1-2 pounds of actual weight loss a week which is the healthiest way to loose weight.  Then when you get to your ideal weight start taking in more calories a day to gain muscle.  And try protein shakes,  i make mine with 1 cup frozen strawberrys, 1 bannana, 4-5 ice cubs, 1 scoop whey protein, and milk/water/juice, and it tastes great.

You can definately drink too much water which will flush out your electrolytes and throw you body out of balance.  Add lemon juice to your water to avoid that problem.  By the way, coming from a LMT and herabilist, you are actually getting some good advice here.  Take it all in moderation and tweak what works for you.

Curtis, allot of people are making good points.
My opinion is as follows. You are ONLY 15. You still haven't lost  all your baby fat. THE BEST THING for you to do is to look at the BIG picture, your entire life not just an upcoming summer to get trimmed up for the chicks. If you get a good grasp NOW at this stage in your life of healthy eating and moderate exercise and make it part of your life. NOT A QUICK FIX. Soooooo many people get tied up in fast weight loss solutions and exercise guru's telling them what they have to eat and what will give you FAST results. Forget all that. You have soo many hormone raging in your system right now you do NOT need to be taking any type of ripped fuel or fast burn or any of that crap. Take a dietary class in school as an elective learn what your body really needs. Take advantage of your position as a student and your age. You are an unsculpted uneducated young man looking to make your life better. LIFE>>>>>> and make it a long one. There is nothing wrong with vitamin supplements. But you have more "stuff" floating around in your system at your age  that can be used to make you be anything you want. Big strong lean mean whatever. All I'm saying is the diet and supplement industry isn't a multi BILLION dollar business for no reason. And we (usa)as a society have the highest rate of morbid obesity on the planet because so many people start like you and wanting a quick fix that starts the rollercoaster of YO YO dieting. Eat smart, eat healthy, exercise in moderation until you get up to speed. to where your bodies furnace needs to be stoked with different healthy foods that you can get in your everyday diet.
JUST MY OPINION as a father of a 15yr old.

Only eat the food on the outside walls of the grocery store. Nothing from the middle aisles. That is all you need. Before school run 2 miles. When you watch tv every time a commercial comes on do push ups or sit ups till it's over. Every night before you go to bed do 50 push ups and 50 sit ups.
