Title: two deaths in tallahassee
Post by: tallyrancher on June 06, 2005, 10:51:46 AM
there were two people that got killed around tallahassee memorial day weekend. one by a cable and one by a tree while riding their atv's. so please becareful and watch out for others. i have children that ride and i only prey they don't hurt themselves or get hurt by others not paying attention.

I went to college in good ole Tallahassee.  When I was there, a motorcrosser was out haulin @ss on a dirt road and turned around to see his buddy and ran into a guide wire for a pole and was decapitated.
The first rule to learn and the absolute bottom line is that these toys can and will kill you if you let them.
People need to take note of this.  When you buy your kids a quad...the first thing to tell them is not, "This is yours, have fun."  It should be "this can and will kill you. It's not a toy, don't treat it as one."
It's unfortunate, but over 90% of all of these deaths can be prevented.   :-\

tallyrancher, about the one that hit a tree? was it in tallhassee or down in wakulla county (just south of tallahassee)? because i was the one that hit a down tree saturday (memorial day weekend) and yes i was going fast but, not nothing reckless when i saw the tree there was nothing i could do exept what i did (pull up on the handlebars and try to hold on) anyways, i ended up getting lifeflighted to tallahassee memorial hospital. i have 4 broken ribs, a broken clavicle (collarbone) and a clapsed lung. this is my second serious accident on my 4-wheeler (atv) but, i'm not going to stop riding it but, i will be more careful. atv's are only as dangerous as the rider. just like a gun is only as dangerous as the shooter. again, if my accident was one of the ones you mentioned then, i must make a correction... i'm not dead. but, if i'm wrong i'm sorry about getting on your topic and trying to correct you. now, while i was in the hospital i think i herd the nurses telling me about someone getting killed on an atv that same weekend. i'm sorry to hear that and i feel for his/her family.

Well, myself and I'm sure all other atv riders/members are wishing you a speedy recovery, Wakulla.  Were you riding the z400 when you crashed and wearing a helmet?

Tallyrancher, I can speak for most atv/dirtbike enthusiasts-when there are younger/smaller riders around we look out for them.  I now have a 1 yr old son and hope to see him riding in the next 6mo.-just kidding-but hopefully sooner than later and this subject is getting closer to hitting home-I'm sure it is unsettling-I might know that feeling all too soon!!

thnx man, yes i was wearing my helmet which ended up coming off and landed 5 feet from me (hjc's) sux and yes i was riding the z it's at a friends shop (so my wife doesn't sale it until i get better) and he said the only damage to the bike is bent handlebars and the bracket that holds the back fender up (their cheaply made anyways).

I have an '05 kfx400 and about 6 wks after I got it, I bent the handle bars and broke the taillight. Shortly after that the left heel plate and shortly after that the right-damn jumps.  I usually upgrade when things break-wife wasn't in that mind frame, especially after just purchasing.  Renthals and aluminum heel plates will have to wait-it's been almost 6mo. since that happened and the Renthals and heel plates are still on hold by wife.  I'm trying to limit my breakage at this time and hopefully she gets the hint-my birthday is at the end of this month-I've circled, paperclipped and highlighted the heel plates I want in each Dirtwheels since they broke-I've even explained it could be hazardous to me to have broken heel plates!!  This is my birthday wish-I've straightened out the handle bars for the time being.
