Title: Re: decked jon boat- boat is done and on the water! Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 16, 2008, 09:12:58 AM ran it yesterday and it would only do about 20mph and just dig, didnt wana get on a plane and that thing would not wind out liek a 2 stroke should all becasue of that damn long shaft. so today im building the transom up 5" taller. the motor itself runs great tho, starts up quicker than my truck lol. heres a few new pics
(http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/kawasaki400racer/Photo0708.jpg) (http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/kawasaki400racer/Photo0704.jpg) o yea, i made a console and everything since i got all the steering and throttle stuff for CHEAP. still need a tach for it. i talked to a cop guy on the Florida sportsman forum in the "ask the law" section and he ran the numbers, the boat didn't come back stolen, he also contacted the real owner. he said i should have no prob registering it. im calling him today and getting it done... btw thats a private lake, so its legal. Title: Re: decked jon boat- boat is done and on the water! Post by: Hondabeefast on June 16, 2008, 09:24:08 AM nice!, lookin good man....How is its stability?
Title: Re: decked jon boat- boat is done and on the water! Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 16, 2008, 11:13:13 AM nice!, lookin good man....How is its stability? with 2 people, fishign off of it aint to bad at all. when your running its really stable under power. im gonna run it with the 5" taller transom today or tomorrow, im inside now just waiting for the paint to dry on the wood im using for the transom, got the aluminum all bent and ready to go... Title: Re: decked jon boat- boat is done and on the water! Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 17, 2008, 02:55:21 PM transom didnt fix the prob, turns out i had the throttle hooked directly to the carb, it has to be hooked to the timing advance plate/throttle setup so that it advances the timing as i give it more throttle. i fixed that, built the transom and the thing MOVES. it feels really fast on the water, but a realistic speed is probably about 30mph with 3 people, a tnak of gas, all the fishing gear, ect. when i ran it back to the ramp just myself with no one in it, it was crzy fast, it jumps up on plane at half throttle, itl do about 35+mph at wide open, when i turn it kicks the back end out like a jet ski lol, its quite a handful controlling the throttle turning...
got a few pics ill post in a sec. Title: Re: decked jon boat- boat is done and on the water! Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 17, 2008, 03:10:57 PM (http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j139/kawasaki400racer/Photo0715.jpg)

Title: Re: decked jon boat- NEW PICS Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 17, 2008, 06:10:30 PM im putting a small bilge pump in the back now since it takes on a little water over the transom on a hard corner if im not on plane.
as for right now, i forgot to hook up the hulls ground to the battery and it touched the positive terminal, and all my ground wires went up n smoke, so i have to run some fresh wires... not a fun job :-[ Title: Re: decked jon boat- NEW PICS Post by: Hondabeefast on June 17, 2008, 08:41:46 PM how many times did rob get stuck?? lmao :o ;D

the boat MOVES. its the golf cart on water lol Title: Re: decked jon boat- NEW PICS Post by: GENERAL-Z on June 18, 2008, 06:41:27 PM ill get a video when its finished, i gota beef up the transom some more with some steel square bar across it. that 25hp bent the extension piece very slightly and i want to put a stop to it before it gets to be a problem. what will you think of next lol rolback1 my dad say i have to sell all thous speakers in one week or hes throwing them awaythe boat MOVES. its the golf cart on water lol Title: Re: decked jon boat- NEW PICS Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 18, 2008, 06:48:37 PM come down this weekend and ill help you get rid of those speekers ;)
but seriously, try and get a Monday off or something and come down for a weekend, theres plenty of mud out thee by now and the jon boat will be ready for some fishing, not to mention the golf cart is running better than ever, it will actually pull the front wheels a foot off the ground with 2 people in it just launching it hard now... Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 20, 2008, 03:53:44 PM went fishing in it today, had the camera with me and decided to shoot a few videos, came out pretty crappy but they're alright...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7KVyiPoJbY it moves pretty good with 2 people, it refuses to keep the front down with one person in the back only, it will put the bow down to get on plane, then catch some air and lift it up, and slam it down over and over unless there is weight up front. so i got to talk to the real owner of the boat, i sent him 50$ in exchange for all the papers so i can register it... rip off! lol im so glad i dint have to deal with the dmv and send off a letter that he wouldn't have signed and all that crap. an noaa special agent guy(from another forum) ran my vin number, got his number, called him, and give him my number for me. I think it would be engraved in a persons brain to figure out that a small boat like this SHOULDNT have a 25HP Johnson hanging off the back. How much has this whole transformation costed ya if you dont mind me asking. We have a 14ft V-hull aluminum jon boat that just sits, wouldnt mind fixing it up and making it sea worthy again. We have a Vhull that looks like the one in the picture below, just not as nice in its current condition. We found it floating behind our house a few years back and no one claimed it, so we got to keep it. The transom is in rough shape but I think with some work it will be good to go. We did put our 4HP Yamaha on the back once and it moved good through the water, so a 20HP or less would probably work good. Ive been wanting to fix it up for awhile... lazyness. LOL (http://www.akmining.com/boat/losn16.jpg) Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: kfx400rob on June 21, 2008, 09:07:04 PM i found out the max hp for this boat is 7 lol. REALLY? lol. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 21, 2008, 09:08:13 PM if you boat does have that floor brace on the ransom like the pictur you posted, then your good for a 40hp in my opinion. never go with "just enough" power...NEVER. never spend money on a project if your just going to build it slow. just my opinion...
thats a sweet boat you have, would be good with a front deck and a 25-40 horse. width is everything on jon boats, and if thats a wider boat, it needs more power... mines the narrowest around, thats why that little 25 is such a hotrod on it. a 25hp on anything else would be a turd really. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: kfx400rob on June 21, 2008, 09:13:32 PM yea but $50 is what he was asking for it, and 200 is what he wanted to pay for the billy goat.
Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 21, 2008, 10:16:26 PM It has a longer brace that goes along the whole back. I'm going to go look it over tomorrow real good and see what I have to work with. With my luck it probably has some sort of deteriorating going on with it.
The transom will need a good amount of reinforcing to handle anything like a 40HP motor. I don't want anything to big, I plan on going tiller not console. Takes up too much room in my opinion. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: kfx400rob on June 21, 2008, 10:17:45 PM any john boat will need some wood on the transom to handle any real power. just a wood piece and an aluminum plate over top will be enough.
Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 21, 2008, 10:36:13 PM any john boat will need some wood on the transom to handle any real power. just a wood piece and an aluminum plate over top will be enough. It has a piece wood going across it and thats bolted down. We did it when we put the 4HP on it. The back itself flexed alot with just that motor, we did have a old 9HP Johnson that we were going go try on it about a year ago but were afraid the back would snap inward. We sold that motor... wish we didn't lol. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 22, 2008, 08:18:16 PM I looked at the V-hull today. Not in that great of shape as I previously thought. Covered in mold from all the rain we've been getting lol. It has some rot going on in the back as you can see in the pictures.

Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 22, 2008, 09:42:32 PM The transom is very thin, I would have to think of a way to really beef it up. The rot has me worried because you can see the rail bending outward.
Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Hondabeefast on June 22, 2008, 09:48:46 PM basically just like my v-hull lol except the rot
Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 22, 2008, 09:49:43 PM basically just like my v-hull lol except the rot Is your transom setup the same way? Its just a damn piece of aluminum riveted in every inch or so lol. His is a one piece so I could see it being good with a 25HP Evinrude. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: kfx400rob on June 22, 2008, 09:54:20 PM its probably a pretty cheap boat though, i noticed EVERYTHING is riveted, even the transom isn't welded on. but it looks like a 16 footer. you would need some good triangulated braces to the floor and gunwals for a 40hp but it could be done for fairly cheap.

Its just a damn piece of aluminum riveted in every inch or so lol. His is a one piece so I could see it being good with a 25HP Evinrude. my boat isnt even close to designed for that kind of power, i have the worlds beefiest transom on that thing lol. like i said, at 35mph, the floor of the boat is like walking across a water bed. my boats a tin can compared to yours, yours shouldn't have any problem with a 25. also, most 25s aren't as beefy as mine, mines the high thrust model/commercial model, its supposed to be for like pontoon boats and crap like that, its not made for small boats like mine becasue it has more drag with that enormous lower unit with the through prop exhaust and all Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 22, 2008, 09:59:38 PM its probably a pretty cheap boat though, i noticed EVERYTHING is riveted, even the transom isn't welded on. but it looks like a 16 footer. you would need some good triangulated braces to the floor and gunwales for a 40hp but it could be done for fairly cheap. And the fact that it is REALLY old. I think we found this thing when I was around 8 or so, I'm now 17 lol. And it was USED back then haha. I think I might just take that whole aluminum piece off along with the rivets and get someone to weld a much thicker one in. Then do the bracing in the back myself. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: kfx400rob on June 22, 2008, 10:03:46 PM yea mine is fully welded and has some bracing on the corners. no offense but that boat has the cheapest transom I'v ever seen lol, you would think it would be better on a boat that size... it would take a good amount of work to make it worthy of any real hp.
Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Chevy1500z71 on June 22, 2008, 10:06:53 PM yea, thats a nice boat, but that transom is going to make the difference between turd and hotrod.

I also have an older Gheenoe and BassTender, but those definitely aren't rated for any HP above 7. I could just sell the three for cheap and buy a better V-hull. Don't need three crappy boats, just one decent one lol. Title: Re: decked jon boat- new video Post by: Young Gun on June 22, 2008, 10:54:52 PM you know, aluminum goes for like more than 2$ a pound, i bet if you went to a scrap metal place they'd give you 200$ or more for that boat you got... Ehh, I may do that. I think I might just throw it in the back of my truck and take it to a friend of mine who owns a Marina. See what he says before I do anything like that. If he says it can be beefed up then I will let him do it, I'm sure he wouldnt mind the business.
