GOOD JOB DAVE, This is awesome we are going to part of a real show and race for $$$$, there will be racers coming from allover once this gets out. Are they going to modify/lengthen the track before this race? Did you get a chance to ride on it with the Banshee?

dave
two things, the website said that the track is a 1/5 mile not a 1/4. are they making it bigger?
the flyer said that the flat track races were harley flat track racing. is that accurate or are we allowed to run the imports too?

Regardless of what other activities are advertised for the facility, the SDTA is going as a group to have a race there. That means the same classes and rules we run at every race.

What Brady said is right on. I called the promoter and asked why is says Harleys. He replied that he would fix that to read "motorcycle flat track racing" and delete Harley so it doesn't appear selective.
Nate and Shawn, good question! Yes the track is being lengthened from it's current 1/5 mile length to a 1/4 mile. I was told they are hauling in brand new clay because the current surface there is too sandy. I haven't riden on the track but I did drive on it with my truck which wasn't as fun. :D
Brady and I are going to visit the track and meet with the promoter next week just to make certain everything is as promised!!

They can still bring on the Harleys. In 74, my bike ate their lunch.  Just have to find the balls to wak the throttle   8)

Hey Guys, Here is the latest, greatest flyer. If anyone thinks it needs improvement or info. added to it, by all means let me know. If I left out anything tell me. If you want more info. on it I will have to go to 11x14 which would allow me to possibly get a google or yahoo map on it for the location. Anyway, here it is for your enjoyment or to pick it apart!  :)

You two wheel guys are really bothering me!!!  I am so ready to get back on a motorcycle. When I was growing up in Michigan I had a pro racer for a nieghbor that got me started on ice. I had a honda elsinore bored to a 202, and an Italian made 100cc 1973 Harley. I really miss them.

Well, quads are for people who can't ride motorcycles!  ;D Tell me if I'm wrong as I ridden all of them (quads, trikes and two wheelers), and I believe it takes a little more to ride a bike quick. Just my opinion and they can be like armpits, everybody has 'em and some of them stink! lol

i wouldnt say we cant ride bikes its just that we dont want to have any broken bones. i have been racing atv's for 12 years and NEVER broke a bone! VS. if i were on a bike i would break a bone everytime i rode!LOL 8)
thast why i cant bring myself to buy one.

Wow,that says a lot about your riding ability! ;D Yes, bones do break now and then but when you mess up on a quad if you're lucky it is only a spin. If it catches a rut and throws you it is usually quite a ride through the air with a sudden stop with the ground!! Or a tangle with another quad which means one of you is going to be launched into the air. Hey, they all have their good points and bad. I don't know about you but I don't like hitting the dirt anymore than the next guy!
Cheers, Richard :T

but no turns please!LOL :P  like i said i havent broke anything yet and i dont want to start now.

Here's the latest on Sumter....A couple guys stopped by today at the track on they're way home from Ocala. The track owners were there working the track. I was told they have rolled and pressed the clay for the last several days. Our guys unloaded and ran hot laps. The report I got from those on quads is that the track is awesome! A couple bikes ran laps too but I didn't get their feedback. Hope everyone can make it, should be a great race.

The bikes that ran the track was myself and KTM 54. The track is real tight corners and will be good when rubber gets down. Track owner was real nice--we just wanted to stop and look and he said unload and take some laps. He even watered and rolled the track for us. In December they are going to put a roof over the whole thing----track and grandstands. You guys will have fun cause I'll be out of town---dam it.

Hi everyone, my name is Sheldon Gecker. Bill Cleary and I are the owners of the track and the promoters for the facility. Thanks everyone for the nice comments! We are trying to put together the best possible race track we can. The race track is going to be very good and fast. The clay has been tested rigoursly since May of last year. It is hard and take rubber without dusting.
We appreciate you guys coming out on Sunday and giving us your feed back. We are really looking forward to the event. We should have a ton of spectators watching the races. This may present you guys with a great opportunity to get some new blood into the sport.

Today was our first Flattrack race and Hunter (Holliday) wanted me to let everyone know how much fun he had today. That was the first race where he just had fun since his bad MX crash back in Jan. at the SSQSA Live Oak race. Hunter gained some confidence back today and we had a great time. We wanted to thank everyone for putting on a great event; Brady, Dave, Brett, Sheldon, Bill and all of the staff that we ran into today. Overall, it's one of the most impressive events we've ever been to, from the games and bounce houses for the kids, all the way to how friendly all of the staff was and the best trackside concession stand ever! Thanks guys, we can't wait to come back.

The Vet 30 and Vet 40 classes were combined. It had 7 riders. Dale had his hands full with some pretty fast old guys

This is my new favorite track. A couple of changes to my quad and I will run with the money class anytime.  ;D

This is my least favorite track by far, there is no room to start clean, no room to pass, too small and outright dangerous for the fast class guys. Not to mention it is a tire shredder. We fried 3 tires yesterday!! All while sliding all over the place, people ride on the bottom and sling sand all over the track to create a grip/slip condition, you come in and slide then it grabs and will highside you. Its probably the worst track we have ever been to and I hope we don't come back soon.... :ThumbsDown.gif

Thank God Thunderbowl will be back soon!   :T , its by far the best track we race on. It isn't scary fast but has everything, room for starts, room to pass and not terrible on tires. And best of all, we can race there at night so it won't be 95 degrees in the shade like it was in Sumter yesterday.

just want to let everyone know that i am ok from my little wreck on saterday. i haven't wrecked like that in at least 10 years. i guess i had it coming! :-\
i will have to agree with scott... this is the worst track i have ever seen.  what got me the most is how DANGEROUS it was in the open class.  everyone was weelieing on each other and slamming each other in the first turn. i will say that i have never felt so unsafe racing in my life! and i have been flattracking for over 10 years.
what made the first turn sooo dangerous was the starts were so short that we were going in 4 wide into a sandy corner with only a groove for one person.
look at it this way.... SATERDAY, WE HAD THE MOST WRECKS OF ANY RACE WE HAVE EVER HAD. what does that say?
and also we need to go back to 4 wide. 6 is too many people for a track so small and starts soo short.  i love to race for fun but i don't want to get killed doing it and saterday was just too dangerous. I'm not sure how the other classes fell about this but the open class was wayyyy harsh. there was no time to spread out before turn one and it was just a freeforall. in other classes they are spread out more in turn one but not in ours. i just want it to be a safe race and i don't want to see anyone get hurt.
Brady said in the riders meeting that " there will be no bumping please!" and I'm not sure everyone heard that cause yesterday i saw some dangerous riding! so much that
i told dave i didn't want to run the money class anymore. i wasn't sure if the danger level would get higher because money was involved. turned out it was a clean race....
just wanted to vent a little and let y'all know about my concerns... so how does everyone else fell about this?

i had a good time and again, thanks everyone for putting on the show and supporting the league. you know what they say... i bad day of racing is better than a good day with you wife! b:r  joke ladies.....

Another race is now in the books.

First: The facility and staff deserve props for all of their hard work in getting the facility race ready. The owners and staff were very accomodating, helpful, and easy to work with. The track itself was nice and appeared to have lots of grip. Yes, there were some areas that need improving, but alot of it can be contributed to "opening day blues" and I'm sure after they get a few races under their belt alot of the small glitches will go away.

Second: There were a few "mishaps", but the good news is that I don't think anyone was hurt. Mostly bruises and sore ego's. There was some bumping going on, but on a track this size, it's almost impossible to avoid. The good news is that since the next race is at Thunderbowl, our flag man knows better what to look for and can cure a lot of those "rough riding" issues that have been coming up lately.

All in all, I thought it was a good day with some good racing and some new faces coming out to race. The rain was never an issue, and it was beautiful all day.

Special thanks to Brett from the SSQSA for all the help. That computer program definately helped Dave and I avoid a lot of writing.

Thanks to everyone who came. See ya at the next one.

We just want to thank everyone that has worked so hard to provide us with places to race!!! Merritt and Jessica had an absolute blast.  The track looked pretty tough (that's why I didn't ride) but all in all it was a great race day!!! Many thanks to Brady for getting everything going again!  I posted pictures of the races and practices on our site -- There are 4 pages of quads, 3 pages of M/C and 1 page for the Pee Wees.  I am getting great practice with taking pictures.  I hope you all enjoy.
Thanks again!!!!!

Hey Bamaquad,

Are you gonna make it down for the Thunderbowl race? We got our home track back, I know you'll like it but you will want to spend the night because we race at night. This is a very good thing from now thru October.  8)

We had some serious handling issues with the Sumter track, its the first time we have ever been there (as with every track this year so far) and Derek rode a pig to a decent 3rd place finish. We will be better at Ocala, a track we have been to many times before. Come on down and getcha some... ;)

I didn't know quad racers had to reference a book to know how to turn in circles!  ;D Is there a chapter on starts? Might be helpful to some!! :T
Cheers

Not gonna make it down anytime soon. After the Ocala race and Durhamtown race the following weekend I am pretty tapped out on gas money for the time being. Plus I got a vacation coming up in June so that don't help much. I'm going to try & get back down there a couple more times before racing is over though.

I'm going to give Huntsville 1 more shot and see how many show up & if there isn't enough to mess with I am going to quit racing here and come down there atleast once a month.

Derek those black things are called tires and they suppose to stay on the ground in shorttrack racing. ;)

How did you wind up like that anyways? Clip somebodys right rear?

no, i did it alone! i got on the gas a little early coming out of turn 4 and the steering just went away. i slide out of the groove and thats it....  that track was SUPER slick outside of the micro groove and once you hit that sand, its all over. and there was NO runoff room at all!  it your out of the groove you are on the wall!! :-\  like i said before... i cant wait till thunderbowl re-opens! that track was just plain dangerous!  i havent wrecked like that in 10 years! so i hope i can go another 10 before i do it again! 8)

One way to stop all the 1 groove racing is after the 1st practice session put tires or barracades out in the groove that is forming for the 2nd practice session to bring in another groove. Then when the 1st heat race comes around you will have 2 grooves.

That's what I noticed about Ocala, bigass track and no passing until somebody got out of the groove. Pretty much a holeshot will win unless they mess up or somebody sticks a tire to them.

Just my 02. :N

Your 2 cents are worth a million bucks! You are exactly right. I actually will take the blame for not telling the track personel to move the corners for round 2 of practice. :( It will be better.
