Title: 04 YFZ rated?
Post by: 1FasterBlaster on May 02, 2008, 07:46:58 PM
I have a friend that bought a 04 and doesn't ride it, he likes dirt bikes. He said he would sell it to me real cheap.
Are there any upgrades that need to be done to these quads that is common with the YFZ's? I heard there was something that had to be changed on some of them.

yeah. the decomp plug is the main thing on 04's and some 05's i think...

my yfz has a 06 motor so i dont have to worry about it :) lol.

decomp pluigs are like 20 bucks.

Decompression plug is a must but its probably been done by now. I dont think the oil mod is necessary for most. I had an 04 and have a 06 now and neither have the oil mod and Ive had no motor troubles.  The 04 swingarms were bad about cracking, mine did. My 04 would also only run right with the headlights on.   I've had more DNFs with my 06 than I did with my 04. Think I'll get a 09 when available.

I've heard that too about the battery not charging unless you rode with the lights on. Did the swingarm break where the brake assembly is?

Friendly huh?  I do recall a few stories involving not so 'friendly' cops. ::)

It's not exactly what I wanted, but for $3000., it's a steal!! My other option is a KFX400 full race ready.

If that kfx costs about the same, I'd go for that. If anything happens, you could just part out the bike. That will pay the quad off itself, and in stock trim a kfx can sell for 2-3 grand.

jesse stop supporting those damn 400's.

get the freakin YFZ.

its good for MX even in stock form.

plus who knows what that kfx's been through , if its got suspension work  , i take it they use it for mx?

The KFX belongs to my friend Dave. He's the one that overhauled the engine on my LTZ400. He bought a LTR450 and doesn't ride the KFX anymore. The price is only for me.
He's older and has Arthritis so he had it set up for a better ride. He would ride for a couple of hours until his hands would hurt.
But yeah, it does have at least 7 or 8 thousand in after mods. Plus, I like the reverse.
The YFZ is cheaper, but not really what I'm interested in. I'm not much for MX anyway, but if I do get into it, the KFX is already set up.

get the yfz. they are better.

I would, but the KFX is loaded with mods and fast enough for me to pass some guys on 450's. I'm not doing MX, so It fits the program.
But if anybody wants a new condition 04 YFZ, let me know. My friend only wants $3500.

idk a yfz is alot faster with just a pipe and the cam mod, it would take alot of engine work for a z to keep up, whats it got?  both bikes are good.

Port & polished heads, Hott cams, jetted, DG pipe, 9 way adjustable CDI box, intake and all the other mods like Houser a-arms, swingarm, Elka's all around,Beadlocks w/ Holeshots, nerfs, Taper bars,ASV levers, racing clutch, steel braided brakelines, Powermadd guards,Maier cover, graphics& seat cover; it is fully loaded.
It's not just the bike, it's the rider. I've passed plenty of 450's on my old 400 and without racing suspension This is by far, the fastest 400 I've seen and he does all the work himself. Not to mention he's got mad replacement mods down to the valve springs if I need them and he can do any kind of repairs I need.
The YFZ will just be a stock YFZ.

Exactly, I'm not defending my class. A stock yfz is a stock yfz. That kfx is freaking LOADED. The suspension alone will cover for the speed variance between the 50 cc's. Suspension almost always beats speed, except in drag racing ;D.

I'm just saying the yfz has allot more potential and if your into performance you may kick yourself for getting the z in the long run. but i don't know what you plan to do with the bike. as they sit the kfx is nicer though.

Then buy the GD 400 and stop wasting our time with questions if you already know which one you want and that going backwards is so important to you.  :}}

Don't be mad Matt, now I'll actually be setup for some QS's!! Even if it's not on a YFZ. I'll need the setup trying to get back in after 2 years of no riding.

It looks like that KFX is set up for mx not QS's

The a-arms are only 47". Their not 49" like MX a-arms. He had it set up for woods riding.

I'd say its worth a look. But look carefully for crash damage, spot welds on the frame, etc.

I pretty much decided to go with my friends KFX400. I know what he's done to it and it has everything I need already.
I don't think I've ever seen a deal on a 450 like that...wonder if something is wrong with it.

Title: Re: 04 YFZ rated?

lol.

i bought my old 450r off of my friend for 2,500.

traded it for a 05 shee.

then traded that for a 04 yfz.

so basically , i also got a 04 yfz for 2,500. haha

That's how you do it. I'm getting a fully modded KFX400 for under$3500. And it has about 4 to 5 thousand in upgrades, plus he has a lot of replacement parts-aftermarket-also, he can do any kind of repairs or work I need.
It's a good thing those LTR's came around, the price of everything else has gone down.

Lol are you kidding me, the resale value of the 400 went so low, I cant even get 3k for my 05.

I know. It's great for all us 400 riders. I've seen other 450's for under $3500.
