Title: '02 Rubicon noise identification help?
Post by: Ida_Mann on April 15, 2008, 08:55:17 PM
doesn't seem to matter if it's hot or cold, and it starts on the second pull everytime(dead battery, too lazy to replace).

I thought it was the valves at first and I just did an adjustment on those to make sure they were OK and they are.

The sounds it makes is like a metal slapping sound that is constant with the speed of the engine and goes away under acceleration.

Doesn't matter what gear the tranny is in.

sound doesn't go away when it's warm or cold.

it isn't very loud, but riding this machine for the last 2 years,,,,I have gotten to know it and this is out of place and started last time I was at the Plex.

I also always run 93 octane.

Can't think of anything else,,,,someone got an idea?

I'm headed out for the weekend tomorrow(hopefully) so any help would be appreciated if someone can throw me some advice.

this is a lil off topic but if the bike has ever seen water up to the pull start area, id be careful and not use it unless you absolutely have to (ie. in the woods with a dead battery) because the corrode very fast and the spring breaks. weve had 2 break on a recon and a rancher. theyre not sealed very good.

as for your problem, check the cam chain tensioner. my cbr was doing that (sounds like valves). its the chain slapping the cylinder. if the tensioner is fine your cam chain may be stretched. it sounds kinda like a loose chain on a dirt bike or valves. just a thought. good to check anyway cause if it is out of wack, it may skip a tooth and destroy the valve train and top end possibly.

that seems to be the way I'm being pointed at another site as well,,,,,,I'm debating on whether I want to tackle that or not tomorrow.

seems as if I have to take off the top of the engine just to look at the chain.

if you have a manual, it should show you how to test the CCT first without disassembly. it should be on the back side on the cylinder. id see if thats whats wrong first. if thats is  you just disassembled a engine for nothing. i think my XR manual said how to check the tensioner.

I'll dig through the manual tomorrow to see,,,,I hope I don't have to tear this thing down.

if its a manual cct, but if its a automatic cct (i believe all hondas are auto stock) then no. you can buy a manual cct prolly.

and for the life of me I've gone through the manual a dozen times and can't find anything on it.

it would be in the top end section. like the cylinder assembly section.
