Title: need help with doing ball joint on my truck
Post by: Cory1020 on January 06, 2008, 03:27:35 PM
Ok, my lower ball joint is bad, and i got a new one.. I just need to know how they go in pretty much.. Are they pressed?
Can i do it myself, or should a shop do it?
Its on a 99 f150 4x4
Any help would really be appreciated..

It shouldn't be pressed in but you will have to by a ball joint puller or just wack the knuckle with a hammer and it should pop it loose. You can rent a ball joint puller from AutoZone. It's like $60 but you return it and get the $$$ money back.

I just did this.

It has to be pressed in.  Suggest upgrading to a greasable ball joint. Ford factory are sealed.
If you going to replace the bushings on the lower arms, then you get to run into a whole nother problem.

idk how to describe it, but im really thinking wheel bearing, ive had my share of them go out on our hondas.

what else could it be? It has to be something in the drive line, b/c the slower you go the slower the noise, the faster  the louder "faster" the noise.. oh and only driving in a straight line..  and sounds like its coming from the left front wheel

and i sprayed some pb blaster around the hub nut to get it to stop making noise so bad so i can get to work and it did stop making noise for a lil while

I had a noise that was happening on my '03 F150 that started soon after I got it new.  I took it to the dealer a couple times and they couldn't find it, they were even nice enough to keep it for a day or two once and gave me a rental for free.  Over and over again they said they could not get it to repeat.

I finally got one of the mechanics to ride with me on a short highway trip(mostly happened on the highway), and I couldn't get it to repeat.

Oh well, I figured I would live with the noise that sounded like something was loose underneath the truck and was banging against the bottom every now and then.

When one day it hit me that the noise only happened when I had the tonno cover rolled up against the back window........so I looked back there and there was a small strap meant to keep the cover in place that had a plastic latch at the end of it that would sway back and forth and smack the front of the truck bed.
