Title: Charging Problems
Post by: Fox17 on December 19, 2007, 05:05:13 PM
On my 98 CBR, I had a regulator/resistor put on a while back in Oct. It charged fine for a while but it started to quit charging over time and it got worse. Now the bike wont charge at all. Do the reg/res go bad over time and gradually get worse or do they just stop working one day? I dont know what else could be wrong. Suggestions? Thanks.

do you mean regulator/rectifier? Typically a rectifier will go bad after the stator has shorted. The stator is really what charges the battery, the rectifier just flips the ac to dc & sends it to the battery to charge it.

ok, i just got in from messing with it and i started it up and checked the voltage at the battery and it said 14.?? that is where its supposed to be right? so why wont the battery charge? this thing is pissin me off. is the battery the problem? could something else be wrong even if it says 14.?? at the battery while its running? Im thinkin if the battery is getting that then the charging system is not at fault. It is a old maintenance free battery so could that be the problem? Maybe it just wont hold a charge anymore and wont charge up.

Charge the battery and test it with a load tester and see if it will handle the load. Your local auto parts store should be able to check it for you.

You need to charge it first to get a true reading.

alright, it says it has a 12.36 volt charge. but i didnt charge it. will a battery that wont hold a load hold a charge? im guessing it will since you have to charge it to test it. when i push the starter button, it tries to start for a second or 2 then quits. and all the lights go out.

The starter could be going bad also. If it is drawing more power than it should it could do that as well. If i was betting I would pick the battery.

Charge the battery and have it checked.

The battery could read 12VDC, but you cant measure current. The current is where the battery gets the umph to start a motor. I see this all the time on equipment. Sounds like you just need to replace the battery. Usually about 2yrs is the life of a maintenance free battery unless you use it really regularly all year long then maybe 3yrs.
