Id@ I think I have an explanation. When you feel like you are pushing out a football and nothing is there it is because what you felt was a really hard dense turd. When the turd exits it ways more than your average "floater" and hits the bottom of the toilet at a high rate of speed. When it hits the bottom of the bowl it follows the contours of the smooth slick trap and shoots it up and right over the siphon and down in to the sewage. I guess they can be considered self flushing turds.
