Title: Going for a larger displacement
Post by: buzzardman on October 12, 2007, 08:37:31 AM
My son's XR70 engine is in need of a new top end.

I have researched it last night and have two options and was wondering if anyone has tried either of these.

option 1:  for about 250 bucks shipped I can upgrade the to the 88cc big bore kit and then spend another 100 for a new carb and pipe.  so total 350 bucks.

Option 2:  for 350 bucks shipped I can swap out the entire engine with a lifan 125 cc.  this comes with adapters, carb, and most everything else.    down side to this is that it's chineese but still looks honda  plus it might be too much for my 9 yr old to handle.  Although he is getting pretty good.

What do you think?

Sounds too good to be true. If it's a no-name Chinese brand it usually doesn't last long. If you could swap that bike out for the XR100 then that would be a good deal. My nephew's 100 is a rocket! But if not, 88cc doesn't sound too bad. Thats a good jump. I'd feel safer with my money going that direction.

I would stay away from the Chinese stuff. If it breaks you won't be able to get parts.

Thanks for the input.  I was leaning the same way and am a little leary of the chineese stuff.

My plans are to have it tore down and inspected.  If it has to be bored then I'll just get that big bore kit.  If it is just a simple piston and ring job I'm going back with stock for 110 bucks.  Then I'll just throw on a new carb and pipe to give it some pep.

I would really like to get him a XR 80.  The XR 100 is too big for him right now.   The XR 70 seems a bit too under powered but with even the stock piston and with a pipe it might be good to go.  Only time will tell.  I've given some thought about trading my 95% restored KX   for something nice for the boy.  I'll include a pic incase whoever reads this has something like that in mind.  ;)

My old KX80 never had ballz. That thing was slow.
