Setting up a BIG group ride with advance notice,  so there is
NO excuse not to show.  Headed out with a group of 13 +. from Broward & Palm Beach
Meeting at 6:00 AM on Dec 4th on the shoulder right after the toll (Broward toll) on Alligator Alley.   All riders are welcome..  Must wear a Helmet at BADLUCK / SQUARES, also, must register to ride at the location.

So........ who is on for the ride ????  

We'll meet you out there.  If most are going to need permits ,the Ranger station could be a good meeting spot.

are dirtbikes welcome? and dose it cost any $$$

Permits are free,  Dirtbikes, atv, trucks and buggies are all welcome in Picayune (Squares/Bad Luck)

For those who can not meet us at the Broward toll, meet us at the Ranger Station between 7:30 and 8:00 I will provide description of our vehicles before the date. All are welcome, 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers, trucks 4x4, buggies etc.  

I am definitely in for the trip.  I will be coming from Gainesville so I will be heading south on I-75....is there anyone who lives up my way who might want to meet up and then head down there ??  Let me know.  Look forward to the trip.

I was wondering if anyone knows if you can still enter Squares from the back way....you know when you have to go through that little neighborhood and then drive down the dirt road ??  

Also we definitely have to do a night trip out to the badluck prarie.....that's a good time

I'd love to go but I can only ride on Fridays....

Mudman, we are not familiar with another entry to Badluck, just through Everglades Blvd. over 1-75.

This sounds like it could be a good ride.  I may have to show up to this one.  I have only seen very little of the forest.  Would like to go deep into the forest, not to much of the mud.  It should be pretty dry that time of the year.  Right?

Eric- when I took you and Paul for a trail ride, you went on most of the trails in the woods. I've been trying to find more, but not having much luck.

Well before I moved up here to Gainesville I lived in the Keys so I traveled up 41 with my father and we always went in the back way.  The road isn't the smoothest but its a long way around to the I-75 exit if you come up 41.  My dad still travels from the Keys so I thought I'd fill everyone in just in case anyone lived down in Homestead and wanted to go up 41.  

Does everyone camp by that canal or is there a different spot you guys try to meet up ?? Once again I've never met anyone from this site but hopefully I'll meet a few of yall at MSG.....later

I would estimate 2hour drive from tampa.It is well worht the ride and now that it is drier it is very sport quad friendly.

Looks like it gonna be a blast out there Dec 4th.
I think a good meeting place would be by the camp site.

DON'T FORGET YOUR HELMETS !

Only legal place to camp is at the T canal, run by DOF, $5.00 a night.   No fires allowed anywhere else.

As far as woods trails go, some but it is mostly open prairie.  Along the canal side of the south blocks decent riding without a lot of mud.   There is riding for all kinds of machines from minis to sport bikes to monster 4x4, with 22,000 acres its just a matter of where you go.  The main prairie is passable (usually) at that time of year for the 2wd quads as long as you watch where you are going and stay on the main trails.
The south blocks last weekend were already getting very dusty, so remember your goggles if ya got'em.

22,000 acres :o :o :o  I have been down there a couple times and have not seen that much ridin.  I am going to have to come down and ride with the right group (Sorry GreggT and Naplesraptor ;D)

i'm in st. pete,  it was almost exactly 3 hours for me from the squares to my front door.

just came back from a ride it wet and muddy you first have to get a permit at the ranger station it free to ride there

Hey, I am very interested in riding on the 4th but what kind of bikes will be out there 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.

Also is there going to be alot of mud right now. And do we camp there on Friday night

I'm thinking that you might want to go and try to ride anyway. Forestry won't stop you but FWC might. It might be worth a chance...

i am still planning to ride the 4th will go on the 3rd and camp a bunch of my friends camped out there for thanksgiving and had no hassels

I went there the friday after thanksgiving and didnt see any officers ;)

We came back from there this morning. Campout sat night no problems, the Forestry guys are cool ! talk to them for a hour. The heat from the FWC. Let set up a trip for dec 4 like planned. 3 sport quads in for the trip.

no way, if you do that they be on the 12-4. Forestry guys are cool with it. if you dont have a permit, stop and get one and bring your helmet.

i had talked to sara from dof they are not giving any more permits  what are you all going to do i have 6 people and bikes

About the permits.... where is it that you get them? Will the group meeting at the toll pass by the permit place so that those who dont have them can get them?

All the times ive been to the squares ive gone without permits. I didnt even know they were available? What if we dont get them?

State Forestry WAS giving out permits. Since the area is a Federal wildlife area, the Feds told Forestry that they had to stop giving out permits because they had no right to do so. There are no more permits being given out.

So with this whole permit deal going on, is the ride still on or what?

my permit good till 12-18. Lucky me  ;D I was their last weekend no problems. Other group of friends was their weekend before that, also no problem ? SO I GUEST THE RIDE IS ON! who going and were do we meet.

Looks like several riders don't want to take the long ride just to be turned back.  Did anyone notice FWC or local police this past weekend.  We need info please.

The latest update from what I have heard is...

Badluck/Squares is currently open to all riders, whether you have registered or not. Sometime in January of 2005, FWC and DOF is supposed to have a meeting to discuss some details on future rules and regulations on whether or not they will keep this area open to ORV's.

As of now, I plan to go riding this weekend and have a great time with my family. This past weekend, there were no FWC or DOF Officers around at all.  For those of you that have doubts...put them aside and come out for a great weekend!!!

Remember though...We still need to put pressure on the FWC to keep this area open to all riders for 2005!

Count the budman and gang in on this ride...mudbug will tackle Bad Luck for the first time on his bike. Unless I ride it...its too fun to ride.   ;D

ARRA NEWS ALERT

Today the U.S. Forest Service released its long-awaited Final Rule for off-highway vehicle use on Forest Service land.

Dale Bosworth, Chief of the Forest Service, commenting about the new rule said that “OHV and other motorized vehicles are fun and exciting ways to experience national forests and we’ve seen dramatic increases in their popularity in the last decade.”  Bosworth also said that “land managers will use the new rule to continue to work with motorized sports enthusiasts, conservationists, state and local officials and others to provide responsible motorized recreational experiences in national forests and grasslands for the long run.”
 

Picayune Strand(Squares/Badluck) is a STATE, not national, forest. Don't know if it's included in this "Final Rule". Bosworth said that “land managers will use the new rule to continue to work with motorized sports enthusiasts, conservationists, state and local officials and others to provide responsible motorized recreational experiences in national forests  and grasslands for the long run.” The agency expects that it will take up to four years  to complete the designation process for all 155 national forests and 20 grasslands. Regardless, this is progress!
