Post by: Fox17 on August 28, 2007, 12:05:48 AM
how far will a fully rifled 12 guage fire a slug? ive heard up to 200yds with certain ammo but how accurate is that? and what size scope would best accommodate a slug gun. all them shotgun scopes are small.

Make sure your shotgun can shoot a slug first. You will have no problem between 150 and 200 yards. Slugs have a tendency to shoot high. Make sure you get a good scope to handle the impacts from the slug, which has a tremendous kickback. I would recommend a good shoulder pad.

Bounty is right about the barrel of your gun. What type of shotgun and barrel do you have. I do not trust a 200 yard shot with shotgun. Were do you go that you need to use a shotgun and not a rifle.

I know in Ocala there are not that many places to see over a hundred yards. I am lucky to see 40 yards as thick as it is up there. Most of the time the Bucks are on the youg tree lines next to older pine.

mine is very accurate between 50 and 100. I never shot it further than 100. you need a shotgun scope. one that is made for a shotgun. believe it or not, my shotgun scope is one of those small ones and i like it better than my rifle scope. field of view is better.

rifled barrels are available for most shotguns to shoot slugs.  if you poke around some gun sites you might see shotguns refered to as deer guns.  those guns are set up for slugs. they are pretty acurate but the round is very slow, so anything over a hundred might be delfected by winds.  simillar to my 44 lever action its a great close range gun with power, not really know for long shots.

it will be a Mossberg 835 with a fully rifled barrel. 12ga. the reason for the shotgun is ive never seen a place to shoot more than 150yda in florida where i hunt and a barrel is alot cheaper than a $700 rifle. i can get a good scope and the barrel for $250. i also bird hunt and do alot of turkey hunting. and i just perfer the shotguns over rifles. theyre cheaper to shoot for fun. i dont hunt too many times a year so at least for now a rifle wouldnt be worth it really. The gun is basically this gun:

along with the slug barrel from this one:

thanks for all the info. i really appreciate it.

Ok, shotgun are good for all around hunting for one, rifled barrel are only good for slugs, turkey you need a full choke and for 00 buck you need a mod choke. 2 3/4 shell with 1 oz Slugs are good for 50yds dead on after that it drops about 2 inch at 100 yds at 150yds drop 4 inches.

Hey Fox, make sure you try that Mossberg out. The pump action makes a lot of noise when you lift the gun. I personally do not like the way they built them. I bought one last year and I really do not like how loose and how much noise it makes.

i already have the gun i just need the barrel. i dont think it makes too much noise. all pumps make some (at least all the pumps ive ever shot).

i use a full for turkey and i use modified for buckshot right now. i dont like the range of the buckshot though. only good for 50yds max.

My son has a older model mossberg and his is great. No noise you until pump it. I hope no gay stuff come on that. On the other hand mine if I move the gun it clangs. They made the stabilizer a lot thinner, making it less stable--Good luck I hope you got a good one.

Fox for 100yds + get a rifle   ;)  the best rifle for deer here in florida is a 270 cal or a 30/30 and 3006 for GA. I use a 44mag Ruger 10/44 for hogs in heavy wooded area and a 17hmr in open fields both good for 100yds +

Typical wasteful Miami Cuban. Why waste $1.33 when a 2 cent .22 mag will work just fine.

It won't be good enough for the hunting you sound like you want to do. I suggest you start out slow with something a little more your speed, like capturing flies and pulling the wings off and work yourself up to the level Big D has, with successfully capturing iguanas. After that, the sky is the limit.

Maybe you want to go Wahoo hunting with me and the boys? I'll let you use my favorite .223 shaft if we are lucky enough to run into any 10' + sharks and you are a semi decent shot. It really isn't much fun if your prey can't kill you I always felt, but whatever have fun out there.

I suppose that depends where you shop. On the corner of Ali Babba in Hialeah you can get em for .$89

Yep thats true and 22 mag cost more than 2 cents.  Fox here a picture of my 270 rifle, I can shoot a quarter at 100yds all day long. http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=001B&cat_id=035&type_id=005

yea.

thanks for the help big-daddy. that is a sweet gun but its a lil pricey for now. id love to get a browning or something high end like that but im afraid at least for now im gonna have to go with savage, mossberg, winchester, tikka or something like that. i have to get a scope too.

hunting is getting as expensive as riding.

Hey, no problem!    buy the shotgun without the rifled barrel and use 00 buck for deer. Then down the road buy the rifle with the scope.

A slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and scope is good to 150 yards.  Shoot different types of slugs and different shell lenghts (2 3/4", 3", 3 1/2") to find which shoots best in your barrel and what amount of recoil you are comortable with.   I use the federal 2 3/4 slugs with a barnes expander slug.   It is good to 100 yards for me,  further that that and the groups open up to much.
