Title: I'M SORRY, IT'S STORE POLICY!!
Post by: buzzardman on August 20, 2007, 12:59:02 PM
With that statement comes most of your rude interactions between customers and businesses. This Blanket brainless statement is the equivelant to a cop giving you a ticket then saying "have a nice day".

This morning I take Tristan (my 9yr old son)  to 7-11 for some juice and a muffin before his first day of school. He was excited to start school with his new clothes and new back pack filled with nice new pencils he could play pencil wars with (he goes through thousands).
We walk into the same 7-11 that I get my coffee from most every morning. We are looking for some oj and the store clerk yells from across the store behind her counter that "your kid needs to put his pack up by the front door". "It's store policy no back packs in the store".

So how am supposed to take that??? Here was my thoughts and maybe I just belong back in a small town.

First off, the pack is brand new, full of new school supplies. I didn't feel comfortable just dropping it by the front door so any one of a thousand Florida bum  loosers could grab it and go. So I stated to the clerk, "It's ok, he's with me"!
The old toothless crabby clerk yelled once again across the store and said "it doesn't matter if he is with you, you can't be in here with a pack, IT'S STORE POLICY".

NOW I'M WAY WAY WAY ANGRY. feel free to insert lots of curse words here!

So I drop the bottle of OJ right onto the floor, It was unopend and plastic so it wouldn't break, but it was a great physical way of showing how I felt. I took my son and walked up to the counter then told her she sees me in here all the G-d damn time and that I have a PERSONAL POLICY as to not letting any sorry son of bleepin person accuse or treat me like a damn comon criminal, let alone pulling that crap in front of my 9 yr old son. So then I said that since she has just broken my personal policies she could either change her way of treating me and my son or she and her company can go pee up a rope!!!
Once again, the toothless ignoramous just said "It's just store policy".

WHEN IS IT OK TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE WE ARE ALL CRIMINALS.
What the hell happened to good ol common sense???
I could see asking a group of teens with tattered jeans and skate boards to leave their packs. I don't agree with it because they are also inocent untill proven guilty and have rights too. But at least that would make more sense.   I guess the store clerk sees a grown man with a young nice dressed 9yr old boy as a criminal threat as well.

So by now the manager (whom I always see and chat with) comes out of his office and is watching. And I told her while looking at him that the store policy is abusive to its customers and if the management can't hire anyone smart enough to see the differences in threat levels from a customer like me and my boy VS any of the Bums loitering out front of the store all day with no shirt, no job, and lots of tattoos, then I damn sure don't plan on stepping foot in this store again.

NOW AM I WRONG OR TOO SENSITIVE?

we left and went to another large convenient store whereas my boy asked me if he should take his back pack off before we left the truck. I told him "if you wanna wear it, then by all means son, you wear it". The store clerk whom I've never seen before complimented my sons hair and clothes and was super friendly. She was exchanging pleasantries with him about starting school today.  Not being familiar with this store we had to walk most every isle in order to get him a nice blueberry muffin.  It was easy going and a nice clean store.  With me still being a little pissed off about 7-11, I told the friendly clerk what had happend at their competetors store and then told her that she would be seeing a bunch more of my boy and I because she just did a great job of earning my business. So long 7-11!!!

I think it is very important for me as a father to my son, to stand up for mine and his rights no matter how small the infringement is against us. I want him to know that he is the one who will decide how he will be treated regardless of any dumb a$$ or any dumb a$$'s store policies!!!

I personally believe this is why this country is quickly becoming such a nasty unfriendly and non free place. It's because instead of fighting back on the little injustices that are done to people by business, and government, people just keep their mouths shut and start accepting how they got treated. THAT IS BULL PUCKEY IN MY BOOK and people need to start getting off their insecure butts and take a stand. Doesn't anyone remember the saying "give an inch and they will take a mile". These little unjustices just keep getting more prevelant because people are just laying down and giving up their rights. It's sad really.

I personally believe that having to pre pay for gas is basically getting called a gas thief before I ever start pumping. For years I boycotted any gas station that had this policy. Every time I would roll up to one of those stations and the always rude clerk broke my ear drums with the outside speaker saying "its pay before you pump". I would always place the nosle on the ground and leave it there, then push the button and say. "I'm sorry but it's my personal policy not to be treated like a thief or a criminal in order to use your product, then I would leave. Now, because every other American thinks its ok that company policy dictates the clerks can imply you are a comon thief, I simply can't find a station that operates "old school". I bet in the 50's if a man would have driven up to a gas station and the attendant said the man had to pay first so as not to run off and steal the gas, the attendant would have gotten some teeth knocked out. Lord knows that's what I feel like doing.
Criminals who steal should be caught and dealt with but company policies shouldn't treat their good customers like the criminals regardless of their losses.
If it continues I really can see all resteraunts making you pay for your meal before it arrives.  It just isn't right.  I really mis my small town.

I'm done ranting now.

Clay

Another reason not to stop at 7-11, CITGO = CHAVEZ = TERRORIST, Chavez is president of Venezuala, who own's CITGO & he HATES America.
7-11 supposedly already dropped CITGO due to loss of sales(maybe thats why they have such sorry clerks)

I hope no one hear works at 7-11, & I'm not knockin anyone who does, some are good, some are bad, like anything else I guess.

You handled it about as best as I coulda, I might of accidently knocked into one of the ends of the isles & she mighta had a mess to clean up though, but I know how you have to bite your tounge sometimes in front of kid's.

IMO, & maybe it's just in my area but the 7-11 clerks are the worst, but I like when they have 2 registers open & most people form a single file line like we learned in elementary school & then somebody walks right up to the open register(usually the one by the door & buts everybody else, thats when I loose it, I been standing in line holding this 18 pack of bottles & this guy thinks he's gonna be slick & just jump right in front of everybody, what I hate worse is the clerk & MOST other people in line allow it to happen,       EXCEPT ME !!!

I hope your kid had a better day at School than at the 7-11, I know he was proud of his back pack, those were the days right there.

I like RaceTrack, Radiant, Hess & BP, I don't know where Racetrack or Radiant gets there gas from, Chavez has gotten sneaky & started another name because a lot of people stopped buying gas at CITGO. I hope it's not his gas. That guy's insane !

That's when you walk over to her and ask for the policy in writing, and if she doesn't produce it, keep the pack on and proceed to fill it with various items as you walk towards the front door. Don't forget to put a pack of bubbaliciuos in your pocket!!

I was a little skater myself back in the day and now have a number of visible tattoos but am clean and ok dressed and such.  I didn't mean anything negative towards teens or skaters or tattoos.  I guess a better way to put it might have been someone with a more vagrant look about them.  And if you have ever parked in front of a 7-11 in mid day you know the type that hangs out in the front.  late 20's no shirt, long dirty hair, tattoos, chains, riding a huffy.   There, did I get all the stereo types in this time. LOL

not that a way a person's looks should have anything to do with it. But I did roll up in my nice pick up, nicely dressed, even ironed, and my son as well.  I'm pretty sure when someone looks at me they don't instantly think "thief".  LOL

not wanting to jump on the I agree band wagon here...but just playing the Devils' advocate.........You for one I don't think you should have gotten on the clerk she didn't make the policy(ask for the manager), also what if someone else came in with a back pack on would she have to decide again if that person should take it off?? By the way I agree with you its stupid to think a 9 yr old with his father is going to rob the place but??   I could just see the ruckus when they say you didn't make them take theirs off! it is terrible that we live in a world today where such actions must be taken to protect the law abiding citizens of this great country. I'm quite sure she / he the clerk could have handled it with more tact but you are talking about a 7-11 store clerk here..$5.00 /hr not exactly a human rescourse manager candidate for handling hundreds of differtent personalities that walk through that door everyday!

I know what your saying, but what I might have missed trying to get my point across it that there shouldn't be any policy stating what you can't wear or carry in to a store whatever you want.   What's next.  How litteral should their policies get.  If there was a woman in that store carrying a purse at the time you darn tootin I would have brought that up and suggested she leave that sitting at the door as well..   After all,  in order for something to go in my sons pack he would have had to unzip it.  A woman's purse just pulls open.  Then whats next, having to turn our pockets inside out for the clerk before departing?  It would be easier to pocket something vs unzip store then rezip.   Have I illustrated a bit better as to the terrible inconsistence and the huge insulting manner of the policy in general?  Instead of having a policy citing me and all their other customers as a thief, why not just have an internal policy when someone has a pack, be friendly and just keep your eye on them without saying anything.  Maybe the  clerk out on the floor could call for one of the three or four other white shirt employees to get out of the office and watch for theft prevention.   It's not as big a deal if I know I'm being watched vs be rudely told to leave my belongings at the public door.

I agree, they be nasty up in there.

On a side note, heres a funny story that happened in Tampa to a girl I know. But I think it was a Circle K, my friend & her mom worked at the same place together & took there lunch breaks together, one day on there break they went to this Circle K, her mom was in front of her in line & the nappy headed female clerk said somethin rude to my friends mom, so my friend said somethin back to the clerk, I forget what it was actually about.
Anyways the clerk came around the corner & followed my friend outside talkin her ebononic sh!t, my friend grabbed that girl by the hair & beat her azz right in the parking lot, on camera. A car full of brotha's seen it all happen when they were stopped at the light & pulled in there talkin about "ooohhh girl you just whooped that girls azz" Made my friend happy, the police showed up along w/ the stores regional manager & watched the tape, none could believe the cashier walked from behind the register, outside to argue. She was fired & my friend got a little settlement check in the mail.

That's funny KB. I was in a store one time with my girlfriend and this nappy headed girl was so rude to my girl and I. She was making fun of my girl and I because we had camo hats on. She was mad because I had no cash, and had to use a credit card to make the purchase plus, the machine wasn't working for her. She had to call someone else with experience with that stuff so I could pay for my stuff. On the way out of the store I went back to my truck and saw her walking around the parking lot, so I started cleaning all of the trash out of my truck and I threw all of the trash on the ground and I told her to pick up Larry The Cable Guys trash. She was mad that she had to work.

I will drive the extra miles to another store then go to 7-11, they are dirty and smell.
Yes I like to gas up and then go inside and get what I need. Not going in, prepay first go out and pump and then going back in. I buy a lot of ice, cokes, water for everyone on the job and buy $100.00's of dollars in fuel a week and only by it at 2 places. I pay in a check or cash. I like my gas stations and the people that work there. You can't do that at 7-11.

It's not as big a deal if I know I'm being watched vs be rudely told to leave my belongings at the public door.
cjt

I'm with ya !!!!~ hahahaha!!! OK mr. Willis please pull your pockets out before you come into the store...That would be hilarious...and I DO SEE UR POINT. please remember I agree with you wasn't bashing.. I like KB's response tell them "no speka de engless K?"

Although I agree I wouldn't have been happy about the situation you have to understand their side of it also. Getting upset at them because they are trying to protect their store from theft isn't the right thing to do. If they make the exception for you what happens to the next kid that walks in right behind you with a back pack? Being offened that you think they are accusing you of being a thief would be no different than every person in america being pissed that they have to pay before they pump gas...same thing they don't trust you to pay after you pump...doesn't mean you are a criminal. They are just protecting their business as best they can. If you had lived in a small town then yes I'd be upset but in south Florida there is just too much crime and just because you see someone every so often doesn't mean they aren't a thief. I agree about the purse comment as some women carry purses bigger than back packs but it's a big unreasonable to tell someone to leave their cash at the front door.

I worked in a retail store as a teen and we had a policy of no kids under 14 allowed in without a parent. Too many kids coming in damaging product and stealing when it got too busy. It didn't mean every kid was trouble but it was the only way to reduce the risk of losses otherwise we would have shut down.

No KB I am not kiddin. If they don't want backpacks in there then don't bring them. Seems simple enough to me. As far as I know there is nothing to be learned in a 7-11 so there would be no need for a pack full of school supplies. Why can't you leave it in the car?  If that is thier policy than so be it and get over it. I don't get my azz in a bind if the sign on the liquor store says no shirt, no shoes, no booze.

Oh, OK, but WE WERE NOT talking about an ADULT going into a store w/a back pack on, we were talkin about a kid on the first day of School that was really proud of his new back-pack & went into a store w/ his Father. I asked my stepdaughter if I could Carry hers for her when we left the house for School & she said "No I got it", so some of us kinda understand, some might not.

You replied back & said "You shoulda got up 20 minutes early, a fixed your kid some breakfast", I know how the first day of School can be a little hectic, kids were use to stayin up late & sleepin in, now they have to get up & ready for school, I've stopped at the store a few times on the way to School to grab the kids a couple Lunchables myself.

Sorry if any of us got you upset Busta Nutt, didn't mean too.

PS. I'm just curious, do you have any kids, or do you & your mom work at a 7-11 ?

off topic but another stupid store clerk story,

Here in Tampa there is a BBQ called "Rodneys Rib House" I use to go there for lunch but got tired of Rodneys attitude after a customer ASKED if he could change the TV station to the little league world series that was playing that week, Rodney rudely replied" if somebody was a guest in yo mommas house would you get up to ask change the station" I was like WOW he must not want this customer(embarresed by now)to want to come back. Since then I stopped going, I didnt care how good his ribs where.

Well a couple months later a woman & her dog walked in the restraunt & he chewed her out talkin about "get you & yo stank azz dog up outta here". Well Rodney must be pretty stupid not to be able to tell a dog on a leash or a dog from a seeing eye dog handle/halter/ whatever you call it. Anyways the lady was blind, it was her seeing eye dog,the lady felt terrible, she must of called the Blind People Coalition or whoever they are & they got involved, he gotta big fine, was all over the news, closed down shop, a few months later I seen him on the side of the road w/ a trailer trying to sell BBQ, now he stepped up & moved back into a building, but it looks like a real rat hole.

He does make some good ribs, I think he's kin folk to Momma flossies on Broadway(east Tampa) thats prob. where he got his recipes from,
he mostly caters to people that work at MacDill,AFB since he's right down the street from there main gate, he gets a good lunch crowd from them, maybe he thinks that since his ribs are so good & he pulls a good crowd(from MacDill,AFB anyways) he can be rude to his customers IDK.

I could agree w/ that as long as the clerk asked/told me in a nice kinda way.
But if it's the typical 7-11 clerks I'm thinkin of, that I see first thing on a Mon. morning who look like they been up all weekend, not lookin too good, I would doubt that (unless they havent changed shifts yet i guess)

My momma always told me "it's not what you say,it's how you say it", be rude to me & I'll dish right back at ya, (aint skeered)

Right it is business but regardless they should still treat you as a valued customer. No reason to be rude to you or your family about it. Unfortunately you are talking about someone that couldn't get a real job so they probably don't know how to act in public.

attitude towards customers is most important when you rely on the public to keep your doors open.  i work at a mobil station in miami that has been in the same spot and same owner since 1960.  there isnt another station in miami with that kind of record because they are all rude and treat customers like this.......   hell bring a 9yo into our station for the first day of school and he'll probably leave with free candy.....

Exactly, Theres an AMOCO (now BP) called "Butch's AMOCO" in Tampa on Hillsborough Ave. thats been open since the late 60's, they also have a couple mechanics bays, they have a lot of good small business accounts that have been going there for years because they are nice people, they got a good mechanic that has been w/them for about 17 yrs. they pay him well, he does a fair job & they stay busy.

Clay

First off I completely agree with you, what you did, and the anger it brought on. And not to defend the clerk, but just to hopefully point out why it happened the way it did.
7/11 is not a white collar business for those behind the desk. If the people working there were more intelligent and more qualified they'd be working as anything else, so the idiot that treated you like that probably had the intelligence of a stupid frog (not a smart one  ;) )
obviously the manager was just one of the above that showed up to work on time for a year and got promoted or he  would have immediately put the moronic clerk back in her place and apologized to you.
and lastly this pc world we live in is hampering our common sense and thwarting any attempts to utilize our minds as anything more than space filler between our ears. If 99.9 percent of terrorists are middle easter, muslim , males between the ages of 19-30 they are the ones we should be looking at during pre flight screening right ? Wrong. That's "profiling" and is violating their rights if you believe what the liberals and special interest ethnic groups tell you.
most drug dealers are young, black, and drive Caddy's or Lexus so we should check them for drugs right ? wrong. thats singling out the blacks and makes us all racist and trying to oppress all the great black teens by asking them where a 17 year old with no job got a 70,000 car.
It's nothing more than liberals , special interest ethnic groups, and minorities telling us to ignore common sense, statistics, and sound intelligence because we might offend a terrorist, drug dealer, or common 7/11 thief for being what they are.

I empathize with you, but unfortunately your frustration is in vain. you did the right thing in my opinion, and your anger is more than justified. The only thing I would possible add is a letter to the regional manager. not that it would help or implement any sense in applying "store policy", but it's just another way to vent your justified anger and frustration.
