Title: State Off Highway Recreation Advisory Committee Meeting - July 25th
Post by: GrizzlyBear on July 09, 2007, 11:33:32 AM
The next OHV Rec Committee meeting is July 25th, from 9:00am to 3:00 pm at the Disney Wilderness Preserve, 2700 Scrub jay Trail, Kissimmee.  Good meeting for people to attend to see where the new round of grant money is going, Grants will be awarded, and you can see who is getting them and what they are going to be foe.  You can also meet the new members of the committee(myself included). I have been appointed as an ATV Enthusiast, so I will try to keep everyone imformed on what is happening.

very interesting, there were some guys from Iowa there that gave a speech on small OHV parks up there and how successful those are,,,,,I wasn't able to stay the entire day and I wish I could have, but I'm sure a full report will come soon.

The OHV Meeting was held at the Disney Wilderness Preserve. Reports were given on projects that had been funded already. Miami-Dade ia moving forward with there search for land, Polk County is working with the Mosiac company to obtain land, and Collier County is proceeding with the temporary 150 acre project. The Ocala National Forest has all the toilets in place at the trailheads and Phase II is proceeding.  People from Iowa were here to give a talk about the 8 parks they have established.  The essence to their talk was that you can to a park with under 200 acres , but you must have all the interested parties work together. This includes governmental, environmental, dirt bike and atv. Theses things are especially true in Florida.  The grant funds available are collected from both dirt bikes and atv's, therefore any projects considered must have facilities for both.  Being able to find land of less then 200 acres should be easier. Paul's piece in Madison is 200 acres.

Also present was a team from the Univ of Florida to discuss a study they did on the Ocala National Forest.  It shows the economic benefits of atv's.  Anyone interested in seeing it, email me and when they email me a copy I will forward it to you.

Grant applications were received and the best scored applications were forwarded to the Commissioner of Agriculture for approvel.  Thes includes 2 applications for development of 1200 acres in Baker county. 2 applications for improvements to Croom and its campground and 1 for development of a trail system in the Appachacola Nat Forest.

The next meeting will be October 17th in Pensacola.

Wow.  Now if only they'll continue through w/ working on this land.  That meeting sounds more promising than the others.  Thanks for the update.

It was a good meeting.
Nice to finally meet GrizzlyBear and Id@ Mann

The presetation from the IOHVA was areal eye opener what you can get done when all parties work together ans on small chunks of land.

Paul_S is working in the same direction as this. Cant wait to ride the new area even if it is 4 hours north of me.
