My kids found a little snake in the backyard and we are trying to figure out what kind is it

Looks like a live one, kill it immediately, all snakes must die.

Looks like a cotton mouth. You got any water near by.

A little dark but looks like a garter snake--Good snake.  ;)

ding ding ding.  we have a winner of the identify this snake contest.

there is a little pond on the left corner of our lot.

It is small and hard to tell but it head is pointed like all bad snakes.

Could be a trouser snake. 

Nah.  I don't mind trouser snakes they just spit.  No biting.  I'm gonna be that one has teeth.  So I'm w/ chillin on his response.

Yeah, its a garter.  Its a bit dark but you can tell from the line going down its back all the way.

   I could be wrong, but I'm almost positive it's a Florida Anaconda!! Really, it's a Garter snake.

I would like to thank everyone for your help.  At this point with your help I feel confident it is garter snake.  My 6yrs old son has a fascination with snakes.  He found it yesterday around our house.

I like snakes, use to have couple of pet garters.  That small though, not sure what you would feed it.  I know when they get bigger they like crickets.  For what ever reason though they are hard to keep alive...

Drive my husband crazy, till this day, I see snake I try and catch.

Its a Florida Blue Garter Snake to be specific.
Completely Harmless. They make good pets.

Definately not a Cottonmouth( Water Mocasin) Cottonmouths are dark brown or black in color with light brown stripes. They obviously have a bright white mouth inside, hence the name Cottonmouth.

A few facts for those who dont know their snakes.

"Although 45 species of snakes are found in Florida, only the 6 listed here are venomous and a danger to humans—Southern copperhead, Cottonmouth, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Timber Rattlesnake, Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, and Eastern Coral Snake( Dont get the Coral Snake mixed up with the harmless Scarlet King Snake) The Scarlet King Has a color pattern, which you can tell the differnece between the two snakes with this little rhym- "red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, killed the fellow". The remaining 39 species (and 41 subspecies) are harmless and should be protected for the beneficial role they play in natural ecosytems, eating insects, rodents, rabbits, and other small prey. If you are interested in all of our snakes, then you should visit our 'Online Guide to the Snakes of Florida'.

All yall who wanna kill them must love mice and rats. I love seeing snakes around my house, free pest control. I also have 7 snakes as pets so they dont bother me at all.

Totally agree, rather a snake than a rat or a mouse, can't stand those things, even though I just bought my son a hamster.  I tell him it's a long haired, short tail rat.... Makes him mad  >:( - lol.... Hubby says gonna buy a snake - too funny.

Actually, it's your garden variety shape shifter. You can tell by the marks near it's cloitus.

Youre out of your mind dude. I mean wayyyyyy out there  crazy out of your mind. There is no such thing as a garden shape shifter. Besides, it is clearly a Garden Gnome ( Gardinous gnomes) transformed into its snake-like metamorphasis form.

I have been informed it is my son new pet  ???  I wonder if his bearded dragon get along with the snake.  My guess is NO.  If this guy eats crickets he is in good luck.  We buy live crickets by the thousand.

I wouldn't go throwing him in with the bearded dragon just yet. ("bearded dragon" is that what you kids are calling it these days?).  You need to get him use to his surroundings first, so I would suggest the hamster cage.

What do you mean "just yet" a bearded dragon, I know because I have one thats 2 years old now, will tear that snake to peices, unless its small, but they wont get along. Get a seperate tank for the snake and do a bit of research about their habitat, temps, humidity, eating habits, etc. Set up a tank that meets that criteria.

Just do yourself a favor & put a shovel behind its head & push down real hard & swift. Save your money on snake food & buy atv fuel.

Theres 2 kind of snakes I run across. Theones I take home and let go in the yard for rodent control and the ones I bring home to eat. That is a rodent control type.

I breed thousands of mice and rats then release them into the wild to feed the poisonous snakes I also release into the environment.

 Bounty you know your snakes ;)....and yes they are good.

Thats what I'm talking about.  I found a small snake in my pool strainer a few weeks ago, it looked like a coral snake. While I was trying to remember the little ryme about red and yellow will kill a fellow or whatever the hell that is, I thought, who cares and stomped it to death.

People like that piss me off just as much as the environmental wackos that hate atv riders. Think about that for a minute.

seriously though killing snakes is one thing I dont like. There are only 6 poisonous snakes out of about 75 in florida.

You're right really, but I can never remember which color what..... red & yellow kill a fellow, what is it red & black friend of Jack.....  now when  you're looking at one of them dang things, how the heck can u remember that, I don't even know if I have it right here......  Like chillthemost said, basically when it doubt stompt it out or in this case to death....

I guess we wont ever be friends, because if a snake trespasses on my property he/she is put to death without hesitation. Also, to compare us to "environmental wackos" is completely ignorant. It is clear you should have been a tree hugger. You missed your calling. Satan used a snake to ruin humanity according to the Bible. The snake chose the weaker sex to tempt....I wont go into that for now.

Well, yeah more than anything else. I will kill anything to eat it I just dont like seeing people kill things for the heck of it.

It is not that we do it for the heck of it, it is because they are evil like & deserve to die when they cross the path of a God fearing humans.  ;)
