Title: Scout Ride II
Post by: jjamesbar on May 05, 2005, 06:25:10 AM
with the trail system being established as early as october in ocala, i was thinking about doing a ride similar to the scout ride we did last august. it was a long ride with a fuel drop and people carried fuel as well. it would be kinda like a farewell tour so to speak, taking advantage of what legal trails that are still open to us. we rode 165 miles on the first scout ride. sometime in june or july would be good as the days are longer then. as far as the starting point, the best place would be somewhere between rodman and big scrub but the number of riders may influence that. the reason for the centralized starting point is we could loop north, come back to our meeting point & refuel then head south. also, people that wanted out could drop off then.

its not a matter of "if" but "when" they will restrict the entire forest except for a designated trail system that is being planned as we speak. several members of this site have been told it could happen in october. boy will that ever be crowded.

is the designated trail system for atv's only? Do the trucks and jeeps etc. have to adhere to a set of trails too?

Title: Re: Scout Ride II
Post by: sk8r_dude on May 09, 2005, 12:21:07 PM
It is my understanding that all OHV will be restricted to a relatively small trail system in ONF. From what we are being told a couple thousand miles of trails now used will turn into less than a couple hundred miles of trails. Can you say ATV rush hour.

I predict the same thing that happend with boaters will happen with us. Restrictions were placed with overwhelming "No Wake" and "Manatee" zones that made the sport less enjoyable and reduced the number of recreational boaters. That was one of their goals.

Restricting our riding areas will make it less enjoyable and reduce the number of riders. This reduces the Government's problems in manageing us. Think about it.

Sorry to rant on your post Jeff, providing I have no other commitments on the date I will be their.

During the rodman ride, the ranger at Rodman said they will be building a facility there with parking, bathrooms, washdown, and it will have 3 or 4 trails leading out of there all marked on different loops, I believe he said they will still be 2way trails and it will be marked through the whole system, he said the entire forest will be like that soon. I just hope they still allow us to ride wherever and add the marked trails for the more inexperienced riders and families. He also said they will maintain trails every week with heavy equipment and get rid of whoops, he said one reason they are gettin upset about the trails is atv riders try to go around whoops and the trails just get wider and wider and tear up more forest floor.

That's what happened to the power lines near big scrub camp, it used to be grass and weeds, now only sand.

That make no sense. Why not just grade the whooped out areas instead? [smiley=banghead.gif] Typical government bullcrap.

yes, this is still an option and one that i hope will work out.

one option for the starting point is the old campground location we stop at on the way to the 88 store. its just a grassey field now but its on the ocala maps as prairie pond. its just off forest road 88 north of hwy 316 about 1 mile. there are no whoops (yet).
another option would be somewhere near the idaman trails.

I'm in as long as it doesn't interfere w/ a fishing trip I'm going on.  I know there are atleast 6+ people that have posted interrest on this that are going to be on the fishing trip.  Maybe we can schedule the fishing around this when we get a date.  What do ya think?

when is the fishing trip? i may be open for the 11th as well, in lieu of the 18th.
as far as the starting point the ida trails area would be great. im not exactly sure where the parking area is as i havent started there before. how many trucks would it accomodate? it would be better to start at 8:00am. if things go well this could be a long ride.

or the parking area can handle about the same.

sounds to me like thisproblem of trails getting wider cuz of whoops is the rangers problem all along,if they would do there job, then whoops wouldn't be as bad as they are and we would not have to worry about areas being closed as often..so lazy a$$ rangers if you ride and are reading this..IT'S YOUR FAULT.....

how many could your place handle ida? we could put a limit on the number of riders. or ride from your cabin to the parking area to pick up the rest of the group. as always we can figure about 25% no-shows.

the estimated distance for the north loop is 85-90 miles. the south trails maybe less.

Great, will be good to see and ride with who shows up. I'm ready to see how my new ride handles. I've rode it around here and it runs a little better after the snorkle install. Can't wait to see what a pipe and carb. adjustment will do. Never had my son on a ride like this, but he rides Jasper like a trooper, so I think he'll be fine.

5-7 trucks at my place would give people plenty of room to spread out for a cookout or something for the evening.

I could set up the projection screen for a race or something else on TV, or a DVD.

just ask anyone about the last Rodman ride projection screen at Id@'s ;-)

I did a loop today that took me about 4 miles due west from here then south to the boundary of ONF past Big Scrub, then to the campground at Scrub and almost due south from there to get back.  The loop was about 60 miles all together and I'm worn out from the dang whoops.

gotta take more drinks with me next time.

i hope we can all fit in at ida's. im just coming up saturday for the ride.

the yellow flies seemed to be out with a vengence this year, at least in northern putnam county so everyone be prepared.

everyone should bring food, drink and spare fuel. since the rangers have closed the woods around the 88 store it would be wise to avoid that stop (it was the best).

suggestions: fix a flat, (small portable air pump would be nice to have on the ride), tire plug kit and a few misc tools.

I dont know where Ida's place is but I'll probably be at my place that day. I may meet up with you all. If you want to plan a break/fuel stop at my place that would be cool. I'm 6 mi. north of 316 near hog valley. I got plenty of room, shade, bathrooms for the ladies.

if all goes well we should pass close to your place. it would be a great place for a fuel stop. are you located near the big pit thats fenced off? we will be stopping in the sand pit at eurika dam as well.

'
we should try to meet up at 8:00am and plan to pull out by 9:00am. the northern route will be around 80-90 miles. we should be back to ida's late afternoon. anyone up for a ride south we'll play it by ear. depends on when we get back and mechanical issues.
possible fuel drop locations could be rodman dam or eurika dam. rodman is close to the halfway point. just hide it good, and remember where you put it. i'll have 3.5 gallons with me and will have some in my truck for the southerly route. if i can dig up a map i'll try to post it. i posted some last year but they are probably deleted.

Would it be possible to load all the fuel into someones truck and run it to Rodman befor the ride starts. I have a large suv and would be willing to work something out. Maybe put the gas inside and leave the windows open a small bit would be ok. don't know how that would work but just a thought.

Whats gonna be the pace of the ride? i dont need to do 60 the whole time, but i dont wanna just putt around, im sure that wont be the case though.

...actually only one question, the rest i need to ask id@ ;D

Whats gonna be the pace of the ride?

i like to run 20-25 most of the time, some times i'll hammer down. we try to wait up for everyone. we are basically trail riding but try to have something for everyone. in places we let the faster riders go ahead so they can open it up. in places that are tricky as far as crisscrossing trails and such, its best to let the people lead that know those particular trails. we'll have a little meeting before getting started.

   Jim,

not a bad idea jim. probably best if it was in the back of a truck and not inside your suv though.

was that a stock yellow fly or did it have any mods?  ;D

btw, be prepared for rain. me, odie and a few others took an 80 mile ride back in march. it rained the last 75 miles of the ride, the first 5 miles were nice. we dont let the rain stop us.

jjamesbar, my place is about a mile north of the fenced off pit. I'm 3 houses down from the pig pen bar right on the paved road and directly across from a major trail. I can even check and see if the bar would be willing to serve lunch to everyone. If someone wants to drop off gas or coolers they can be put in my enclosed trailer. Then I may follow you guys to the Eureka pit. Give me a shout if you want to work something out 941-812-2822, Matt.
If anyone would be interested in the Pig Pen lunch thing speak up so I can ckeck on that.

I like the idea of having a gas drop as opposed to having to carry it.  I have room to carry mine.  Bad thing is I don't have a cap for my gas can anymore, lost it somewhere.  On top of that if I want to jump whoops or ride hard I can't do it w/ gas attached.  I really like the idea of having a trailer to drop it off at.

The gas drop seems to be of up most concern to alot of ppl.  We are doing the ride on Sat.  so it seems it would be good to have this settled before the ride.  Any suggestions?

Either way I can't wait.  I've been looking forward to this ride for quite some time.  Also looking forward to meeting some new riders.  Anyone coming from the west coast PM me and I'll hook you up w/ directions from 75.

I can carry enough gas with me to get me by but it would be nice to just drop it somewhere. If we are planning for around 80 miles I shouldn't need more than 5 gallons for both quads probably about 3.

jbbj- I am still unsure if I am going to be able to come down and camp the whole weekend but as of right now it looks like I am just going to be coming down for the day on Saturday. You are more than welcome to follow me down I can meet you some place off 17. ;)

jjamesbar, my place is about a mile north of the fenced off pit.

matt,
since the 88 store is now located in a restricted area i would like to add this as a stop for future rides. is there any gas stations near you. the lunch thing may be hard to coordinate as we really have no control over no-shows or the actual time of arrival. i rode some trails north of that pit but it was about 3 yrs ago so im not familliar with that area.  do you have gps coordinates?

I still have no idea where Idas place is or any details on the route, is it a secret :'(? I offered my place for a secure gas drop point

matt im interested. i didnt get home till late last night or i would have called. if your going on this ride lets make your place the spot for the gas drop. it has to have less whoops than rodman. im pretty sure i could find you place through the woods, but if your riding with us that would be great.

how many people will need to drop gas? please post.

if you need to drop gas get to ida's early and we'll run a truck to matts with all the gas.

thanks for the offer matt.

one other thing. it looks like its not "if" but "what time" it will rain on saturday. if rain bothers you you might want to consider this and let us know if your not coming.

its not very clear but in general this is the route. this is a copy of a ride trever and i rode a couple of years ago so it doesnt show ida's house. we will not be riding to salt springs on this ride but will ride to the st. johns river.

I will have gas to drop, and rain does not bother me as long as it is not to hard and I can see. Like Hollywood says less dust.

I've been looking forward to a trip like this for a while,,,,,,and I know you guys expect a "BUT" in there, well here goes.

A coworker of mine gave me a cold late this week, and I could just shoot them for coming into work hacking their lungs out, but oh well.

I think I coulda been alright without the rain, but with the rain, who knows what I would have by the end of the ride.

I will still be coming up there, so campers please don't cancel your trips, I just will not be making the long ride,,,,I've had some pretty bad upper respiratory stuff before and don't want to go there again.

who knows, I could get lucky and this storm might not throw much rain on us, and I'd be happy to show some people around shorter trails for those who are staying behind.

Dakota and I will drop some gas I think. How far can I go on a 250cc 2x4 with a 2.8 gallon tank? Sorry about your cold Ida.

Title: Re: Scout Ride II

My 250ex will go over 70 miles before reserve is needed if that gives you any idea.

So I probably only need another gallon of has then? Could probably push it the last mile or so if I had to.  ;D

Post by: Ida_Mann on June 10, 2005, 10:21:34 AM
all depends on how you ride it,,,,,Steve was that 70 miles going as fast as you ride it, or someone else? ;-)

my 400EX will go about 60 miles before hitting the reserve and another 10 on the reserve.

but that's just putting around.

Hey Ida!

Did you realize that this ride/camp is same weekend as the LMK last year?....

I just realized that and thought it is neat that everyone is finding their way back there a year later :)

It was a BIG group ride that a lot of us camped at Ida's cabin for the whole weekend to celebrate LakeMaryKid getting his quad. It is a LONG story but it was good times.....

Ida- Yes that was 70 even with me on it I mean come on it only has a 110 main jet. lol

jbbj- Yea I am still coming but something came up as far as meeting you in the am. We are going to head down to Ocala tonight and staying overnight to pick up Candice's son so he can ride his new quad with us tomorrow. Needless to say with all the rain and being his 1st day on the new quad I think we'll just stick around close to Ida's. Plus it may be a little later than expected before we get there. I'll send you a PM.

What a waste of a good morning to stay in bed. Got up @ 0430 made coffee and finished loading up. Checked weather and it did not look to bad, went outside to finish loading up and still no rain and it looked like it had not rained all night. Pulled out and went down to GCS to HH for breakfast, still no rain. Had breakfast and then headed south, still no rain. About Bostwick strated to just sprinkel and not looking good to the south. By the time I got to the Palatka Mall it was raining  (pouring) so hard that I could not hardly see and it looked like, due to the puddles it had been raining most of the night. So I gave it up tuned around and now I am back home and bike is back in the garage.

Oh well there is always another day.

Id@ thanks for the offer to use your place to stage out of, maybe we can do it another day.

This is the ride formerly known as the scout ride....now called the HARDCORE Scout Ride!  To my crew I'd ride w/ y'all anytime.  Nice to see a few of us still stick it out.  Line up of the hardcore riders:  QT, Shulco, jjamesbar, Odie and wife, Wilburz, Dakota, Autotek, Chillinthemost.

Id@ thanks for everything I really appreciate your generocity.  Sorry you weren't feeling well.  I know after we left Hollywood and crew and a few others showed up for a shorter ride.  Sorry I missed you this time.  You guys left camp like 30 minutes before we got back.  Nice meeting all the new people.

Sorry man we rode 77 miles and wore our butts out.  I don't think anyone that went on todays Hardcore ride will be doing any riding tomorrow.  You should have come up.  It was a good ride.

jjamesbar- thanks for leading the ride!  Had too much fun.  I'm going to be sore for days.  You are hell on wheels.

Chillilnthemost, I forgot to drop you a thanks your wife's hair tie.

Jeff, how could we have only averaged 16 mph?  We were hauling butt through quite a bit of it.  Must have been some of the water and technical riding that slowed the avg down.

Still a great ride. I'm not as sore as I had thought I would be.  Maybe it's still working on kicking in.

it was all the water trails and negotiating the downed trees and riding in the pits at eurika dam. on a fast paced ride ive done with only one other rider we averaged like 22 or 23mph. its kind of suprising when you look back on it. the slow parts eat up the most time. and the whooped up trails dont help.

first I would like to thank Ida for letting Dakota and I crash at the crib last night. We played some poker and watched a couple of episodes of South Park.  Big ups to Ida-man!

I got home around 11:30 am, unloaded my stuff, watched a little NASCAR and would have to say my head is ready to fall off my neck and my back is tweaked! Other than that I am fine.

Damn carb was draining fuel like a stuck pig. Good thing  Chillin was on hand. I would not take a carb apart while sitting on a sand trail 1/4 mile from idas. Was ready to turn back becuase I had wasted 20 or so minutes trying to drain what ever was stuck out of the bowl while everyone I had just met was watching. I know Jeff was probably freakin. Chillin took the carb apart, pulled a piece of metal out of the bowl, put it back together and off we went like bats out of hell. I really had no idea what to expect since most of my riding had been at ms&g and I was in for a real treat.  I knew it would be a long trip but most of the forest was a blurr. I would hate to know what a Dreath fast ride is like. Kept thinking my Ozark was going to blow a head gasket. Oh well I had a great time and met a lot of nice people. Thanks QT, Larry, Jeff, Ida, Matt and a few others that I cannot remember. I will post some pics tommorow. Did not have much time for pictures. Also would like to thank Larry for the fuel and Chillin for the drop spot. I really don't kow what Jeff was eating that day but the man can ride. I will be working out over the summer, doing alot of 12 oz. curls and will be ready for the next ride. Might even upgrade to a 300 cc bike. Thanks again.

I just want to thank Ida for the parking spot and jjames for being an excellent guide, the man knows his way around the forest and rides the poo poo out of that bike of his. I offered to trade bikes with him but he declined. Probably a good thing, that guy on a YFZ would be hard to keep up with.
Try as they might though they couldn't drown out my bike, and I didnt have not one clean or dry spot anywhere on me ;D. Already looking forward to the next one. Everybody was great, you have got to really like to ride to have cowboyed up and went on this one.

matt,

somebody forgot to tell you a sport quad isn't supposed to be able to make it through those wet azz trails over by the st. johns river. you autotek and that little 2-stroker followed us (utes) every where. i cant wait to see the pics of you getting some air at eurika dam. you are fearless.
it was great meeting you and your family.i dont think you could have picked a better spot to buy a cabin, i mean its right in front of a main trail into the woods.
lets do it again soon.
