Title: Anyone good with roads in S.E. Florida?
Post by: Toomey on May 26, 2007, 02:21:17 PM
I have a goal I'd like to accomplish in the next year or two.  I think it'd be really cool to run from the beach, to the everglades, or the other way around.  It's about a 20 mile trek as the crow flies, and I intend to run in a straight line, as I feel that my current longest run of 13 miles was tough enough.  My question is what road or path would be best to do this with?  I'd like to have sidewalks most of the way, avoid intersections, expressways, detours, etc.  I was thinking doing it on Pines/Hollywood Blvd because it's straight with only a few problem areas that I saw.  Any suggestions of roads between Griffin Rd. as the north border and Miramar Parkway as the south border would be great.  Another goal of mine is to run from Port Everglades to Haulover Inlet on the sand, that's a 13 miler.  Running is like a hobby of mine I guess.

Go to the link above ,scroll all the way to the bottom for the map.

Most roads are not safe to run on anymore, I would rather run on levee if i were to do a long run loke that.
Try levee 67a at at the 20 mile bend on the tamiami trail where the flight 592 memorial is located . About a 1/4 mile north of the road is the gate to the levee , from there  its a approx. 23miles north east /straight shot to Holiday park at griffin and US 27.Have some one drop you off and pick you up some 5-6 hours later , pace yourself  ,take a cell phone and plenty of water , you'll be in the middle of nowwhere . Awesome scenery.
Good luck  :drink.gif

That actually sounds like a pretty good alternative.  I'll look into that, but won't be able to report back till like a year from now.  I have to train back up to those lengths after a surgery I'm gonna have soon.  According to Google Earth, it's over 25 miles, basically a full Marathon.  Any idea what kind of wild animals are out there?  That's what would be my biggest concern, unless I did it in a group or something.  But that's the kind of run you can fondly look back on alright.

There's nothing wild to fear in the glades only bi-pedal animals.
In the late 70's /early 80's I used ride my ATC 90 out there .I carried extra fuel, a small cooler and a small tent ,good times .

Watch for  snakes if you near the canal bank for any reason , espcially if theres thick grass.

I would think that griffin road would be the best since it ends at Holiday Park.  I am not sure if it would be the 20 miles you are looking for, but you could always run on the levee to get the 20 miles.

I was thinking the same thing, but I would start at Holiday park and run up Griffin to Federal and take 17th  to A1A and than maybe on to Pompano via the sand. It is not a straight line, but I would rather end up at the beach in the end. I can't really think of anything too treacherous on the path either. Maybe over by the Turnpike, but nothing dangerous I can think of.

Sounds like a hard run in the summer, good luck and post back the outcome.

I've done a lot of running in the past year or two, but this one ain't happening for a while.  I'll have to recover after getting a kidney removed in a few weeks, and I'm shooting for this run for the late winter, early spring, or later if I need more time.  But I'll probably make a little thread or something when I do finally do it.  I'm noting all the suggestions you guys have and just planning the route.

If I was you, I would start witha cold Bud at the Dania Beach Grill, right on the beach, 65 N Beach Rd. Dania. From there I would head west on Dania Beach Blvd to US 1. South to Stirling Road, then west out to Dykes Road. North to Griffin, then out to Holiday Park. Nice cold beers out there. Stirling road has side walks 90% of the way, and I'm sorry, but in S Fl you can't avoid intersections.

How much Budweiser beers would it take Budman to do that trip.
