Title: I heard a Rumor
Post by: mud.junkie on May 11, 2007, 08:30:22 AM
Well i heard a rumor that Toyota is teaming up with cat to make the best diesel truck out and in the rumor allison tranny's are leaving chevy to go with yota and catapiller. If, rumor is true might as well say goodbye to all the chevy's,dodges and fords (oh wait toyota already passed ford). Just a rumor that i heard from a service advisor at a Chevy dealer

That will be interesting to see. Not completely underheard of. Take the Taurus for a second. the door seals were a design that originated from the Toyota. as far as the Allison transmission, as long as it remains true allison and not just Allison stamped on the case

Anything is possible but there are a couple holes in the rumor. Allison is part of GM so I don't think they would be leaving Chevy. They could still supply Toyota. Toyota already has ther own diesel that they sell in the global market so I don't think they need CAt.

I find the rumor to be just that. I spoke with my service manager and my diesel mechanic and they have not heard this. We as salespeople and our diesel mechanic would especially know something about it first.

Has been a rumor for many years, but I have seen more and more lately to back it up. The only reason they won't use their engine and opt for the CAT is to keep it "AMERICAN" they are trying extremely hard to pass off the Tundra as a domestic truck and they are doing pretty good. The CAT would just top it off and they would own the market.

Cat has said time and time and time again they have no interest in producing a light duty engine for use in pick up trucks. Ford, Chrysler, and GM have all for years and years tried to convince them otherwise but they just wont do it.

The CAT is available in the F650 and above. although not catagoried as light duty.

Good point

And the allison is in the chevy medium duty trucks also, so I do not believe GM will give that up

I thought I read somewhere that Toyota bought a big part of Isuzu and they are working on a join venture to come up with diesel for toyota.  Didn't they (isuzu) do the same thing for GM (duramax)

GM has owned part of Isuzu since the early 80's so thats not gonna happen until they buy out toyota also. Which could be tommorrow or never.

Looks like Gm may have sold their isuzu stock but they still own 60% of the diesel stock in a joint venture with isuzu.

Here is where they sold their 7.9% of isuzu truck shares.

Toyota is talking with Isuzu about diesel projects though so they may end up with an Isuzu diesel. I am not sure if Toyota will jump to a 3/4 or 1ton, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6cyl in the Tundra and 4cyl in the Tacoma.

I personally do not think GM would let this happen since GM owns 60% of the diesel stock with Isuzu owning only 40%.

I wouldn't think so, but they are talking with each other. Of course it could just be one of the collaboration and tech sharing deals where they just help each other instead of using each others products.
