Title: Question About A Situation I Encountered Today
Post by: Mattism78 on May 05, 2007, 07:32:21 PM
I'm curious as to how some of you would react to a situation I encountered today while out riding.

We had a decent sized group of riders who were with us today. Mostly ATV's, and one Samurai. We managed to find some mud, and a bunch of us got stuck. The Samurai driver was there each time to be the heavyweight for pulling us out. Happened multiple times. He had no problem hooking up, and pulling each bike out. At one point I got really stuck and he needed to snatch me several times. Did it with a smile.

At one point we're sitting there, and the Samurai decides to try his luck in a large hole. Ended up getting REALLY stuck. Keep in mind there's only ATV's with our group. Probably 10 in total. What would you do? You know you can't pull him out on your own, and you risk breaking your bike to get him out.

Reason why I ask, is I have a friend with a large Kawi BF750. Lifted, 29.5's, clutch, pipe, etc. He refuses to help people when they get stuck. His excuse is always he fears breaking his own bike while helping. Myself on the other hand I'll help get anyone unstuck. Especially if they're in my group and helping me out. I've broken my bike before helping people get unstuck, and I'm sure it'll happen again. I just feel compelled to help. Especially when someone who enjoys the same past time as I, needs help

We ended up daisychaining 4 bikes together, and had about 5 people push. We got him unstuck. My friend didn't do squat. Another friend's mom actually got in behind and pushed as well as the Samurai driver's hot girlfriend. My buddy just sat there and watched. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

The next time your out and he gets stuck, just sit there and watch.
I am like you, we ride together and leave together. One for all and all for one, if someone rides w/ me and I know they are selfish then more then likely they or I wont be riding w/ them in the future.

NEXT TIME HE GETS STUCK LET HIM SIT FOR A WHILE AND TELL HIM I DON`T WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE OF BREAKING MY BIKE. ABOUT 3-4 YRS AGO WE WERE OUT RIDING AND CAME ACROSS KIDS THAT GOT THERE DADS BUGGY STUCK WE HAD SIX OF US AND DID THINK TWICE ABOUT HOOKING ALL BIKES TOGETHER AND PULLED THEM WHILE DOING SO I BROKE MY REAR END. I HAD A EXT. WARRANTY TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FIXED NO QUESTIONS ASKED

We gave the guy in the Samurai a hard time. It wasn't straight into recovery mode. Eventually we did need to do something about it though. That's when my buddy on the BF just sat there. I mean come on. We had women pushing, and he sat there. How can you feel like a man just sitting there. I don't get it.

Personally, I will kill my bike to pull someone out who is stuck, even if I never met them before.

I bent the hell out of my front end last weekend helping a group of strangers free a pickup in some nasty sugar sand and didn't regret it one bit.

I think your buddy is going to learn the hard way what happens out in the mud when word gets around you don't help others when they are stuck....and it ain't gonna be fun for him walking home thinking about his bike, and what will probably happen to it.....

I for one would be behind the girl pushing, trying to get her boyfriend unstuck. As for your buddy...if you continue to ride with him, make sure you have someone else you can depend on.
It'll be a long, walking, push if one of my riding buddies was like that!! He'd better hope he never gets stuck around me.

I'd agree, let him get stuck once and sit and watch.

Man I never let anyone sit stuck I have broke my stuff several times attempting to help. That guy needs a gut check and really evaluate if he is a true ATVer or just a poser. the next time he gets stuck....  LET HIM SIT ;)

Why does everyone that talks about the guy that just sits and watches........call him a friend?

FRIENDS don't act that way. Allot of rude, one way, better them than me people act that way!!!

Not Friends.

Another thing that kills me is we kept running into another small group while we were out there. 2 adults, and 3 kids. All on individual ATV's. Seemed like everytime we came upon this smaller group someone was stuck, and needed help. We probably helped 3 times total. They happened to be at the spot where the Sammy got stuck. The two adults came and hooked up. The one guy's low range was blown out, and his bike was almost dead. He STILL came and hooked up. My "friend" was the only person to just be sitting there while EVERYONE else helped.

take him somewhere that you know he will get stuck.let him go first and leave his sorry butt.man me and my son both ride sport quads.we were at croom and found this guy buried with a ute.we did not hesitate to get off our bikes and get in the mud and help the guy out we didn't have a strap long enough to use our bikes but we got him out.

exactly make him lead let him get stuck and then point it out to him that we are on a group ride and we ALL help each other out but, tell him his sorry arse needs to learn that and leave him for a bit. There is no hesitation when I am riding if i see someone stuck I will help, same goes with the people i ride with.Hope i see your buddy stuck 1 day.(nah i hope i don't cause i will pull him out).I guess i am to nice

People like that rarely will take point, unless they really know the trail REALLY well.

I'll bet you find him right in the middle of the pack on every ride.
