Post by: Thrumud on February 01, 2005, 08:01:43 PM
Read what this )!ck had to say about us.  Warning this will pi$$ you off.

They hurt nature

Editor, Naples Daily News:

I disagree with the Daily News' Jan. 23 editorial defending all-terrain vehicle riders.

I believe ATVs should be outlawed except for official use.

I have a suggestion for ATV riders who are upset because they can't ride their vehicles in Picayune Strand State Forest any longer: Why don't you get together as a group and find some undisturbed land which needs recovery and plant trees? You could form a club, have picnics and do something beneficial for Mother Earth instead of destroying nature with your air-polluting machines.

Another suggestion is to thin the woods of exotic plants, such as melaluca, Brazilian peppers, etc. You could turn the event into something enjoyable and have a feeling of accomplishing something constructive. You would help the forests instead of causing destruction to the fragility of the environment.

I'm biased. I hate ATVs. Some riders pass my house on our gravel road and stir up dust, pollute the air, make holes in the road and make a terrible racket as they drive at excessive speeds.

It's too bad some people have to have fun at the expense of other people and Mother Nature by riding destructive machines. We need laws to protect people and the environment.

Read the book "The Man Who Planted Trees" by Jean Giono and become inspired to create forests. It's my favorite book. That man planted trees on barren land and transformed it into a beautiful forest.

Humans are destroying nature with machines and poisons.

This guy has lost his mind. Who does this guy think he is? Come in and tell us that we can't ride our quads and we need to stop and PLANT TREES? I mean i don't litter and tear up the environment and stuff like that. But i'm not gonna go sell my quad for some seeds for trees. That is what wildlife perserves are for! Who is this guy anyway. Just some dude that doesn't like atvs? We are deystorying the environment? I'm with you, i'll be right behind you with the shovel when we show up on our quads to this left wing tree hugging guys house

I think we can handle this guy in a very diplomatic way.  I say we strap him to a tow rope and drag his A-- all the way from corkscrew to badluck, hit a nice big mud hole (with him attached of course) and strap him to a tree since he loves trees so much.   Just a thought   ummmmm. ;D

What you say ?

You know the old saying, opinions are like a@%holes and everybody has one. I wonder how many forests he's planted or if he's an armchair naturalist.

It seems to me most of us on this site are all for the environ
ment.We dont to see the land and all the forest gone because
then we got nowhere to go.I wander if he mows his grass like
the rest of us.Or does he get out with his scissors and cuts
each blade. What about all that evil air conditioning and stuff
that makes cooking his veggie burgers easier?I,m quite sure
that he rides his bicycle to work and doesnt drive his gas hog
to the golf  course.

ATV riders may be allowed to return to Picayune Strand
By DIANNA SMITH, dlsmith@naplesnews.com
February 5, 2005

The battle for land in Southern Golden Gate Estates continues, but state Rep. Mike Davis believes he can help end it.

Davis, R-Naples, and state Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, have spent the past several months trying to create an agreement that would allow recreational riders in South Florida back into the Picayune Strand State Forest.

One has finally been reached between the state Division of Forestry and the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that would allow riders to return to the Picayune by mid-summer, Davis said.

They would have 1,500 to 3,000 acres, but would have to follow trail guidelines as well as guidelines for camping.

Davis said riders would have to pay $50 for a sticker that would allow them access to the trails. That sticker could also be used to get into Croom, another area for recreational riders in Hernando County in westcentral Florida.

"This will be compatible with the Everglades restoration effort," Davis said. "We're not going to have people going around in circles and tearing things up. This will be for off-road vehicles on what will be established trails."

The Picayune in eastern Collier County has been off-limits to recreational riders since the beginning of the year, when the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission moved the expiration date for permits to ride from June to January.

After several years, the state finally bought the land the riders call their playground because agencies want to restore the area and protect endangered species such as panthers. Officials have said recreational riders will hinder the restoration project and possibly could be harmful to endangered species.

But Davis said the division of forestry and the DEP have agreed to allow riders to return to the forest. Now, it needs the blessing of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as state officials.

"This has really been a struggle," Davis said. "We've been working on this for many months now."

Since Jan. 3, recreational riders have held public meetings, written letters to local and state officials and even protested the state's decision to keep them out of the Picayune. The banning of riding in the Picayune has forced riders to travel to Ocala National Forest in Marion County in northcentral Florida, L-Cross X-treme in Glades County or to Croom.

The media attention encouraged Jim Kalvin, founder of a local boating rights and public access group called Standing Watch, to create the Florida Recreational Access Network, a Web site helpful to people throughout Florida who are trying to keep the land they use for recreation. This site will be catered to recreational riders, boaters and hunters.

"It's time for all the people to get together and say enough is enough," Kalvin said. "If you're recreating responsibly and legally, there's no way they should keep us out."

The Big Cypress Basin, the local division of the South Florida Water Management District, said last year it will find riders 640 acres to ride their off-road vehicles on by Oct. 31.

Davis said officials are close to getting the land.

He wouldn't reveal the location and would only say it's somewhere in Southwest Florida.

This piece of land would be a place "where people can be crazy in the mud if they want to," he said.

Davis said he is also speaking to state officials about creating an off-road vehicle park, like Croom, somewhere in South Florida.

Brian McMahon, a Golden Gate Estates resident who has been working closely with state representatives, said he's glad the state is finally recognizing that people in South Florida are upset.

"Public support for this project is dwindling. Not just on this coast, but everywhere," McMahon said of the restoration effort. "Sportsmen everywhere definitely know what's going on. Everybody is very concerned as to what the future will bring."

Sorry to keep postin here but this jerk is wacked, here is another of his letters, what a cook.Seems he has nothing better to do then write letters.

Editor, Naples Daily News:

Why is there so much debate about whether evolution or creationism is correct? Does it really matter? Nothing can be proven definitively. Scientists are learning new things all the time, and as time passes, today's truths become tomorrow's heresy. I'm all for learning new things, but we must be careful not to become dogmatic.

The older I get, the less I know and am now at the point of not believing in anything for sure. I find it hard to understand how life could spontaneously appear from lifeless matter, such as what evolutionists generally believe. I also find it hard to understand how a supreme being could create life and inanimate matter in this vast universe from nothing. I think the human mind is too infinitesimal to comprehend the beginning of all things.

It's hard enough trying to understand nature and the world's problems. I believe in living for the present, and trying to make this a better world to live in. The past is dead and the future will take care of itself if we live a responsible life by becoming Earth's caretakers.

The most important thing we can learn is how to live in harmony with nature and how to save the planet. People argue over things like the soul, abortion, creationism, evolution, etc. while the Earth is being destroyed by both religious and non-religious people.

Being a true agnostic, I find it hard to believe in any dogma.

Hi guys....

I have a couple of point to make. As usaul I imagine some of my points will be popular, some will not.

1. This guy has a right to his opinion as do you.
2. Slinging insults directed at him to each other on this forum is useless although it seems to be all any of us do.
3. Stop wasting your time typing here.
4. We are our own worst enemies.
5. Take time to send a calm, sane, well written, rebuttal letter to the editor of the news paper that this was written to.
6. Join or start a local club. Do clean-ups. Wave to landowners, or even better, stop and talk to landowners! Maybe even offer to take them for a ride.

So then how many of you all responded to the Naples News with a letter of your own?  So far the general public sees only this "Enviornmental Eddie's" opinion.  Don't you think it only right to give OUR side of the story?  I think it is time that more and more of us write letters and "stir the turd" like the enviornmentalists do, they get results because they are vocal.  They see something that they have a problem with and take action.  We talk amongst ourselves and nothing gets done.  Think about it...

I am proud of you.  I am actually pointing out that we need to do this all over though.  We need to be as loud or louder than those who cite "idealistic" eviornmental propoganda vs actual science.  Good luck in PB County.
