Title: CR500 motor in a ATC250R
Post by: KB on December 17, 2006, 03:13:14 PM
i want to put my cr500 motor in a 250r 3 wheeler. i know if i search 3wheelerworld.com i could find somethin about it, thought i'd ask here first. my main concern is the kick starter kicking back instesd of forward. i think i read somethin about just cutting the rear fender to allow for it. anybody here done it or know someone that has ? i wish there was a way you could make the cr500 motor kick forward.

Your looking at a whole lot of frame mods to use the 85-86 ATC250R frame. Theres 2 ways to go about it. You can hack off the entire bottom of the engine cradle and bend new tubing with enough room for the motor and mounts. Or, you can hack off all the stock motor mounts and beat the bottom frame cradles into oblivion onto the the motor fits in (This has been called "dimpling the frame" but its a whole lot more then a dimple believe me). If you reuse parts of the original engine cradle you also have to remove 2 angle braces that come from the back near the suspension linkage mount towards the front. I don't particularly like the idea of a more powerful engine and a weaker frame, I think a whole new engine cradle is a better idea.

Depending on what your doing with it though, its important to remember and design around the fact that you can't have the frame bottom out on a jump or big bump before the suspension does. Thats bad news, real bad news.

Thanks for the reply, you've helped me out. You got me worried about the frame bottoming out though cause I weight about 250.
How much more does the 500 motor weight than the 250, does the frame bottom out only when you dimple the frame or because of the weight of the 500 motor? also what do you do about the kickstarter ?
                                                                                                     Thanks again.

The CR500 engine is taller, and you'll only have the frame bottoming idea if you opt to remove and remake the bottom frame rails to fit the engine, versus bashing in the originals enough from the top for it to fit in. And Really, depending on how low/high you re-do the bottom frame rails you can probably get away with not having that problem. You'll just have to keep that in mind, and check your suspension travel as your working on it. I'm not sure on the exact weight of the CR500 motor. I know the 250R is around 60lbs, plus or minus a few. I'm guessing the CR500 weighs maybe 6-7lbs more. No counterbalancer, much smaller flywheel, and less kickstart gears, but a much larger crankshaft/rod/piston and clutch assembly.

Theres a couple different ways to approach the kick starter. Most people trim the plastics or make a flip up seat arrangement. You have to kind of use a short, small kick starter or it gets in the way of the exhaust pipe. I don't think theres any problems with it clearing the frame after you bend it a little bit. I'm running the original CR500 frame on mine so I don't have any of those problems, but I've got others like speed wobbles and tippieness from the frames high height and long rake out front.

Do you need a chassis?
I have one that I was about to part out.

   -also-

as an FYI Saber racing makes a 500cc kit for the 250r bottom end  big$$$ but you may want to check them out if you have a high or limitless budget.

From what i have seen and heard you can use the whole dirt bike frame and mod the rest of the suspenshion to fit onto the dirt bike frame. That is supposed to be the easiest way.

I cant imagine how fast that would be!  A cr500 is fast and it spins the tires.  but now you have 2 tires that are wider to spin and get traction.  That has to be the fastest thing around!

Heres a couple pics of mine from this weekend up in Indiana. I had it running awesome with the alcohol finally, but I got teamed up with this 900RR conversion thing in my first elimination. I got it off the line, but it of course toasted me from about a 1/4 track on.
