Title: Lurching Polaris 800
Post by: PHN on August 20, 2006, 08:57:24 PM
Who can give me a heads up on what might be going on? I got pretty buried out at Mud Fest and I think I may have smoked my belt.

When I start off from a stop at moderate power the bike surges and lurchs until it gets moving good. If I hit the gas hard it just takes off smoother, but the softer I push on the gas the more noticably the bike lurches. It acts exactly the same in forward or reverse, and the engine is running smoothly. There are no other strange or unusual noises or problems. I have checked and all is dry and mud free too.

So is this a belt of what?

Sounds like the same thing that happend on my old grizzly.. And it turned out to be the clutches.

I have a hard time seeing it being a clutch, but anything is possible. I wasn't working it over that hard....or that long.
I don't see any visable signs of clutch damage...What would be wrong with the clutch beside surface damage (which I do not see)..?

Are you getting any kind of sensor lights? I have seen a bike go into limp mode when the belt was Damaged , and there was a lot of Sputtering and lurching but you could not go over 10 mph. I would look at the belt slipping , I am sure you drained the water if there was any in the belt  housing? Then I would think a fuel problem.

No lights and it doesn't seem to be engine related at all. It runs fine and after it gets going, it goes plenty fast. OIh and no water in the housing....

It just acts "grabby" off the line....the belt doesn't look trashed, but maybe a little shiny on the sides....I may have to just go buy a belt and try that...I appreciate everyone's input....

PHN,

It very well could be belt, had one act the same and had belt changed and it cured it.
