go to z400central 13/41 is the combo to have. no you do not have to change chain legnth. the stock 03 gears are 14/40 and the chain is 96 links.

how do you know what sprocket to run, without knowing what size tires he has. if your running stock tires . and stock gearing you should have 14 40 gearing wich gives you a 286 gear if you go to a 13 41 you will have 315 gear which is a drastic change unless your running 24 inch tires on the back. try 14 41 and you should be happy.

With one tooth, you dont need to worry about length.

Well I need more bottom end for the track, Never really topend for it.
I run 18's btw.
I had a 14 41 set up once on my z400, I didnt really like it, I felt VERY sluggish.

If you are running 18s and your quad is sluggish with 14 41 gearing, then you need to check you motor and carb.  My wife's bike is running that gearing with 20x11x9 Razr2 and it will spin them very easy.  Here is a pic of her pulling the holeshot on her Z400 at one of the FTR Quad Scrambles last year.

rider skill has alot to do with also not just the bike.

that was the time she ever raced. I have changed every sprocket size there is believe me there is something wrong with your zuki and buy the way she now runs 14 39 wiyh a 440 kit and it pulls even harder.

Oh crap my bad, I read that wrong, I thought you said she ran 14/ 39, which is my old set up haha. I mean tmy bike felt sluggish with the 39 rear, I would go 41 in the rear, but a front sprocket is much cheaper and Funds are low :'(

I understand but changing the front sprocket 1 tooth is like changing 3 and a half teeth on the rear you will get lot of rev out of the bottom but less speed overall not to mention over reving your quad at top speed.I have done a lot of gear changing I have three quads yfz450 trail and mx, my sons trx 513 mx, and my wifes 440 zuki.

So basically changing the front would be TOO dramatic a change.
I need a front sprocket regardless,, stock one is starting to warp. SO stock 14, and 41 is a good set up for MX?

you stock gearing was 14 /40 and you dropped your tire size to 18 inch from 20 inch you should be able to run 14/ 39 because 18's raises youe gear ratio .there not as hard to turn as 20's.

I didnt like the feel of my 39 tooth though, And I need more bottom end for the track. I think I rode at seminole once with the 39 and really didnt liek it.

The way I understand it is, if you need a "slight" change you work the rear sprocket, if you need a more "substantial" change, you work the front sprocket.

I think it's about 3:1 back to front when moving teeth.

I guess it's all about feel and where you're riding.

I wonder if there's some secret formula that the factory mechanics use.

well they have more that sprocket secrets. we had a crf tuned by factory honda and it ran absolutely perfect! the jetting was perfect as was the gearing and engine and EVERYTHING. that is why they run so much better.
