Title: Southern Flat Track League.com website is up!!!!! Update on page 3
Post by: HillKiller on August 09, 2006, 09:01:46 AM
It has been proposed that we should organize and create a group with the purpose of maintaining our own points, classes, and year end awards, creating our own schedule, and visit a variety of tracks but still call Thunderbowl our home track (assuming it re-opens as planned). Suggestions are welcomed.

since we cant get any full time points deal going on.
maybe we could start our own group that travels from track to track.
Ive been thinking about this for a while... Id be more than happy to get membership cards made up, stickers for the bikes and every race you would pay into the "pot"/ we could set up points using a spread sheet (excel) that could be posted here as a locked/sticky (if the mods dont mind) and at the end of the season we could have a payout + thophy. You never know, this is how national clubs start.
id be happy to run it and set everything up.

The name of the league will be "The Florida Flat Track League"

Also, if we can move quick on this and get some members signed up, i can at least get the stickers done in time for GA.

 let me know whos interested,
  Chris

The Georgia peep is welcome in the Florida league and who knows one day if this thing grows real big it may become known as the Southern Flat Track League!
 :)

ps I like the motto. We'll put it in the suggestion box.

Membership is open to anyone, Dave and I have been hammering out the details.
This is what we have so far and its subject to change.

the series will be jan-april, may-sept, oct-dec. for this trimester it would go from sept-dec.
for the 25.00 per trimester you would get a membership card and a few stickers.
points will be kept for the heats and mains. at the end of each trimester we will have a banquet
The top 10 in the open class and the top 10 in the intermediate class will be awarded prizes. 9thats what the membership is for)
the winners of each will get those big trophies and the bottom 8 will get some sort of sponsorship prize.
Ill be having t shirts made and be selling those as well.

Like i said we are still working stuff out, as soon as we get something set in stone we will post it.

Chris

PS  for those who seriously want to  commit please Pm me so I can have a true list of members.

well,  so far i havent received a single PM or phone call... Its looking like there isnt as much intrest as I thought there would be. The only people who expressed intrest were Dave, Derek, and Scott.. cant have a league with 4 people.  :-\     Im willing to put in the hours with keeping up with the points, looking for race sponsors, printing flyers, making membership cards, having t shirts and stickers made, handling money, keeping records, web site, ETC, but there has to be a strong backing to get it up and going.

we have made some contacts with some business on a website, stickers,
scooter has made some contacts with a shop in his town.

My wife Gina, has agree to be the scorer. at the end of the night she will collect the scoring sheets from the tower, put them in her excel prorgram and then i can list them on the website and here in a .pdf file.

my family would be in if they are at the thunder bowl and the cost is the same to race as the last time we were there......not counting the membership fee ofcourse. some of these race series are way to pricey for my blood. i can handle $30 to get in the gate and race for 1 person much over that and i cant afford it.

2 adults
1 mini

Alright ladies we have a name!   Drum roll please....

   Southern Flat Track League

  aka   SFTL.

This name was chosen to encourage out of state members from neighboring southern states as well as to signify that we occasionally race outside of Florida. The ideas are flowing, guidelines are being formed, and membership is looking very strong for a start-up effort.  Tomorrow night hopefully the event schedule will be completed with dates and locations of tracks and the series timeframe. As of now, tracks in the series will include Ocala, Valdosta, and Jasper,  but I am working on getting other tracks to take a look at flat track quads. Two tracks on the hopeful list include
www.dirtdevils.com in Land O'Lakes Fl., and
www.speedwaypark.net in Fruitland Park, Fl., near Leesburg.
If anyone has a lead on either of these tracks please PM me with contact info. More to follow... ;D

I keep getting errors too, ive received several PMs that i cant respond to. So as soon at I get home from work i will address them all.

In addition to what Dave said, we sat and hammered it out for quite a while last night, we borrowed rules from several of the established series. It looks like with the amount of people we have willing to become member to get this thing launched we should be able to do it.

Once the web site is established, the rules will be posted, points layout, payouts, pics, race winners pics, profiles (if you wish), ETC. Im going to do my best to make this a professional league and not some fly by night deal.
I know most have my Phone # for those who dont but want it, throw me a PM and Ill get it to you.

valdosta and jasper are out for me :( 6 plus hours of driving each way at todays fuel prices, i dont think so!

will you be able to race if you are not a member?

im sure there will be people show up that want to race 1 or 2 races that are not concerned with the points.

Title: Re: Southern Flat Track League ?
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on August 11, 2006, 07:55:20 AM
yes you can still race.  only points will not be calculated for you and there would be no prize at the end of the season banquet.

Members,

Could I ask you guys to email me some pics of your bikes in flat track setup? action or still shots doesnt matter. If your going to send a pic of a still shot of your bike try to get me one that has a clean bike not one that full of clay.. after all this will be on the web site.
Also, instead of doing everyones profile on the web page, every month im going to do a "racers spot light" where i will sit with you and ask you a series of questions, Eg. first bike, heros, motovation, you get the idea. so staret thinking about what you would say... you never know when youll be next.. >:D
also, Gina is working on the website today, SFTL.com was taken so it will be southernflattrackleague.com
its not up yet but when it is it will be a work in progress for a few days...

Chris

Alright ladies we have a name!   Drum roll please....

   Southern Flat Track League

  aka   SFTL.

So I guess that SFTL will be...Sliding Fast Turning Left?

Question: I have been to Ocala twice to run the beginer class which was real fun but since I been there chest Protectors became manatory and then FT tires for all but beginer and peewee's but now I read someware that FT tires are now manditory in the beginer class also. If this is true is it both fronts and backs?

If so that's kind of making it pricey for beginers like me who just want to run a few races when possiable. but if it's only back tires I guess it's not to bad.

Anyway congrats on the new league!

Title: Re: Southern Flat Track League.com website is up!!!!!
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on August 12, 2006, 02:03:40 PM
Hey Mark,
 Thanks for the post.
Flat track tires are required on front and rear in the open class, now in the Intermediate, Novice, Powderpuff, and Youth if the track will allow it knobbies are fine. but flat track tires are preferred.
 Chest protectors are mandatory.
Trust me, we all understand the money issue with tires, especially if its your first time out. I have heard of some folks using old lawn tractor tires for the rears to see if they like the sport before buying Hoosiers or American Racers.

Check out the leagues web site for more info.

This is just an update to let everyone know how things are going with the formation of the league.
The membership drive is in full swing. The response has been great. Some new people have come on board. As a reminder, be sure to sign up asap in order to reserve your bike number as these are assigned first-come first-served when your payment is received. You can use Paypal via the league website to send in your payment (payable to powerbandperformance@earthlink.net). Make sure you declare you bike number (1st, 2nd, 3rd choice) and class you want to be scored with your payment. Also, your points will begin to count from the day your membership is paid, not before, so please don't delay. Rider points will be posted after each race on the league website.
The series schedule has some open dates. I hope to have these filled soon. Several of you want Valdosta on the schedule and I am working on getting a date there. The race Aug 19 is NOT part of the series in the interest of giving everyone proper notice. As a reminder, as of now, in this 7 race series a rider can drop his two lowest scores of the series, i.e., only your 5 best scores will count towards your series end award.
Series End: The master plan is have have a banquet and/or dinner Dec 9. The hope is to use the membership fees, track donations (yes we have worked it out with the tracks to contribute to the league banquet), and donations from businesses to fund the awards and prizes. We have already received pledges for sponsorship of the series from different businesses. It should be worth attending so mark it on your calendar.
     Watch for more updates later.

I dont think I understand the points exactly so let me ask my question...

I don't think I can make it to the first race in Ocala. If I don't, would it be better to sign up before, or after when the next race comes around? I guess what I'm getting at is, will I be scored a minus if I cant show, vs not a score at all for not registering until the next race?

Working on an ATC R that I should have ready for Jasper. If plans change and it gets done ahead of time I'll be showing at Ocala also. :)

Well. First off The track Owner at Ocala wont allow trikes...  I dont know about the other tracks, Ill ask Dave to call and find out, but its doubtful they will let you run.
Now, if you dont enter a race you get ZERO points, also if you become a member after the first race but BEFORE the 2nd race you dont get points for that first race. Points only start from the time you become a member.

Chris

Alright I gotcha on the points. I just wasn't sure if you got 0 or a subtraction for not showing up to a race. I'm definetly serious about racing on a trike too...so if you guys could find I'd appreciate it.

what about the guys that only make it to a few of the races? would they still receive a trophy for placing? also, what about podium presentation of trophys?

Title: Re: Southern Flat Track League.com website is up!!!!! Update on page 3

were going to give every one something regardless of where they finish.
It may be a small trophy and a gift of some sort or just a "nice" gift.
It really depends on how much sponsorship we get.

Title: Re: Southern Flat Track League.com website is up!!!!! Update on page 3
Post by: HillKiller on August 14, 2006, 11:11:49 PM
Just to clarify the points...

A. A riders points begin to accrue after he/she joins the league. Riders who do not attend will receive zero points for the event, not deductions. Points are not retroactive. Please don't join and then ask that points from a previous race be included. To be eligible for as many points possible a rider should be a member before the first points race (Sept 2).

B. The current series will consist of 7 races. Only your best 5 scores will be tallied to generate an overall score at series end. Also, if a rider only attends 4 races for example, he/she will still be scored for end of series awards. If a rider attends at least one race, he/she will accrue series points, assuming he/she is a current league member.

   Hope this helps.

Yes they do. That is real important to me as well. Last time we all went to Valdosta the owner didn't buy trophys since he had no real idea what to expect. Just in case he is short, Chris and I bought 10 for the mini's. We are expecting 8 for their class. As far as Ocala, the man running the show there made it clear to me that every mini rider will receive a trophy.  ;D

Do you talk to the guys at ocala? We never got a call form the track about our trophys last time we raced when they were out. They said they would call us. My daughter keeps asking me where her trophy is. It was her first top 3 place win she was excited. Thanks.

Ps brotha your not the only one that works 40 hours, hell i wished thats all i had to work

Scooter,

I'm not saying you shouldn't have posted that here or that you need to proof read.
What I was saying is, if you have something to say to me that's in a negative light, PM me. You usually PM me about everything else but then you post something that could be taken the wrong way.  Maybe "screwin em" could give the wrong impression about how we treat our sponsors. I'm sorry if I didnt call your friend right away and you're offended. That wasnt my intention. Keep in mind ,the series doesn't start for another month. I just got his info 4 days ago.

Now the deal with Tim and ??. My goal is to have a professional league. Now, once again do we need potential sponsors and members seeing and reading that kind of stuff? Are we a bunch of kids? No... there are a million threads and even one site dedicated to that. I'm not the only one who requested that the "league" threads be kept clean and professional.

you know all ya'll that are making smart remarks, and you know who you are.take a minute and think about it.chris and dave are taking alot of time out of there personal time to try and make this sport better for everyone who wants to race.then they start a league to help get a small group noticed so maybe people will see that they are serious about racing and maybe open up some other opportunities for everyone to benefit from.and if you think real hard which I know will be hard for some of you,you will see there not doing it for themselves but for everyone.and without sponsers it's going to be real hard to make it all happen. So what i'm saying is quit being so selfish and thinking about just yourselves and start thinking about how this can affect everyone you race with.just my .02

And I don't see anyone else busting their humps doing anything to help. You want to race but seems like most of you sit on the sidelines and talk about the other riders if you even go to a race. Chris and Dave if you guys need any help let me know I'm home all day ;) and I'm very persuasive lol just ask Jody.

Wow Nice Post Blue  ::) This thread isnt goin to make or brake anything,I beleave you and a few others need to jump off the high horse your on and relax,Without US the Racers theres nothing remeber that,as far about being serious about racing.....Ive got almost 14000 in a single quad to come race this Series,Plus a practice quad and a Inclosed on the way,Nah im not serious,Plus you'll never have sponsors if you dont call Them after someone else has already done the work......

I'm not on any high horse. It's not just you who is racing and Chris and Dave are trying to make it better for the racers. It doesn't matter how much you have in your quads or what you have it's what gets done with them that counts. And I'm happy you have and ENCLOSED trailer on the way, and I'm sure Chris isn't avoiding calling the sponser you found he's got alot on his plate not just the league. But enough trash talk Chris and Dave know where we stand and know if they need any help all they have to do is ask.

    Blue,
Thanks for the offer and the compliments. Your noticing our efforts is appreciated.  :)
This idea of ours, the league, has been quite a handful. Chris and I delegated jobs from the start. It's only been about 2 weeks and already alot has been accomplished. Just this week we each took days off to handle league things. Everyone out there who is on the outside looking in will have an opinion somewhere along the way about how things are. However, as with any task at hand, there is an order to which things should be done. As of now, we have a specific agenda and goals we expect to meet. At inception, two of the top items on the list were a push for membership and getting a website setup. That also meant creating all the language you see, the purpose statement, rules, points, photos, etc. Just getting a rules package consumed alot of time and there are still a few issues to be addressed. The site had to be up before we approached anyone , including tracks we race at, about sponsorship. First impressions are paramount and to attract good sponsors we need an official and organized appearance. Once the site was functional, we made the calls and got commitments from all three tracks on the series. To take sponsorship to the next level, we are looking at legalities. Those of you who run a business know it's all about legal forms and deductions. I have been on the phone, at the courthouse, and on the phone again with Tallahassee about these issues. Some businesses I spoke with need a document in return for their sponsorship and as of now we can't provide what they are asking for. So, before either of us sell sponsorship, we want to be certain we are taking care of the sponsors themselves. Mike's a businessman not just a racer, so when he signs on we want to be sure it's done right.

I spoke with James (Scooter) earlier today and I think he had a great idea about a solution for the beginner class to have flat track tires in all the classes. I own an extra, older set of rear tires that I will donate to the league to be rented to the beginner classes that would like to try it out. I hope that others who have extras laying around would be willing to do the same for all the various, different brands so that there are tires for any type of bike. Dave I know you ride a yamaha and I have Honda Bolt pattern. The rent collected could be put into a pot and used to purchase more used tires off of ebay or other places and this could make it much easier to attract new people into the League....................What do you think? I think Scooter has a great idea here.

well Ocala doesnt allow knobbies in any class other than peewees... thats the track rule. (see the schedule) so something has to be done for the 1st timers.

The problem with renting tires is the legal side of it. Since dave and I are Insurance agents we think of that alot. You dont want to rent someone RACE tires and have the tire fail and they get hurt..

LAWSUIT!

Gotcha, Well How about having a Hold Harmless agreement drawn up from an attorney. This was done in the World I.C.E. racing series Derek and I raced in years ago and those tires they lease have screws in them! If this would be too explensive, I would hope those that could will donate them or at least bring them and be willing to loan them out to ease the expense of someone just wanting to try it out. I think the more people we can get out on the track, the more this thing will keep growing. I would love to see membership in the 200-300 range. This would give the league a strong presence at any track and help out tremendously with outside sponsorship.

I hear you loud and clear we need members for sure! I dont think it would be wise for the "league" to go down that road as people can still sue no matter what they sign. (we hear some horror stories) However, if someone wanted to start up a side business renting tires. that might be a good idea... for someone wanting to do that..like...scott :-\

well Ocala doesnt allow knobbies in any class other than peewees... thats the track rule. (see the schedule) so something has to be done for the 1st timers.

Well, being that I am in the position your talking about...a beginner with knobbies, this got my attention. I have been there before they closed using my knobbies but now Ocala requires FT tires so I am trying to decide if I want to make the investment in FT tires and with that said I wanted to ask a few questions ...

Do I need them for both the front and back at Ocala?

What kind of FT tire do I look for? I see a few differant manufactures, compounds and sizes avilable since I would also be getting them with rims. My quad is a Z400. I see sets on ebay but not knowing what I need keeps me from doing anything. I have tried searching around on the net a bit for this info but really did'nt find anything.

Thanks for any help I can get!

Last time we were up, i was said at the drivers meeting that they wanted everybody(no acceptions) to have knobbies front and rear. Even the lil guys should have some sort of tt tire on the rear. Its hard to find decent fronts for the minis so they were willing to let it slide. But as for everybody else tt tires required. Youre actually doin yourself a favor runnin TTs if its possible.

What are most of you 250R guys running for gearing and tire diameters? something in the 18inch 15/40 range I'm guessing?

Mark Potter, you're looking for Hoosiers or American Racers. The fronts are sized something like 18 x 6 x 10, and the rears are usually 18 x 11 (or10) x 10. Most quads have 10" front wheels stock, so you can keep the stock front rims, but you will need to get 10" rear wheels, as most quads come with 9"'s. PM me, and I can provide you with some links to what you need on ebay.
