I say we can make the whole 150 miles :D

It's been almost a year since I have been to the forest, wouldn't be a bad change-up.

I might go, but won't do the long distance or slow riding.  But I'd check up with the ONFA and see what's what for sure.

The new trails are 2 way.  It is a proven fact that if you have 1 way only people ride at a higher speed and the trails are more dangerous

How will the hunting season Effect the Sept 30th ride. Just curious because the last time I was in the Forest riding durring Hunt season I had a rifle aimed at me for stopping Under the powerlines next to a trail head opening. Those guys acted like they were going to shoot whether I moved or not.
Dont get me wrong, I am all for Hunting but that was Bull....lony 8)

Who came up with this idea? I would think it would be the opposite. I would rather have someone run up on me than run into me.

Is it gonna be one big group? or several small groups? and whats the quality of the trail? If theres alot of mudd I probably wont come.

And is it going to be a slow, moderate, or fast ride..?

Title: Re: Group ride SAT-SEPT 30th- Ocala National forest new Trail System
Post by: GrizzlyBear on June 27, 2006, 08:54:06 AM
The trails generally do not have a lot of mud.  They should be in good shape by then, as the trail maintenance equipment should be here before then.  Depending on what people want, we will probably have multiple rides. sme short and some long.  Probably the rides will be relatively slow as we believe in the principle of "tread lightly"

I agree 100% with eworm.  I can't say that I would go any faster-unless I had a faster quad I guess, if it was one or two way trail system.  I have ridden some of the new trail system and was suprised to see it was two way.  Don't get me wrong-loving the marked trail system, but can't see how the trails are more dangerous having it one way.  Just my opinion.

Anyways, myself and a few others will be there as long as work doesn't get in the way.

2 major pieces of equipment are on order. A Swego and a Coot. The Swego is a special bulldozer to level the Whoops, and the Coot is an articulated piece of equipment to rake the trails.

I agree with you guys also, If anyone ever rode on a Speed Ride they'll tell you the experience would be much better and safer if the trails were one way. We never had any problems back then because we never saw anyone once we were back into the trails and because there were so many trails to take. Now your taking X number of vehicles and limiting their trails to ride, then your sending them into 2 directions on one trail system. NOW THAT'S DANGEROUS  :o

It is not the intent of the trail system to provide a place for  "speed rides"  This is a trail system to be enjoyed by families. Safe and reasonable speeds are required.  If you want speed rides, you will need to go to motocross tracks.  It is a proven fact nationwide the 2 way trails are safer, because you must maintain safe speeds.

There is a huge difference between riding track and riding through a trail at a high rate of speed. Will there be speed signs? What is the max speed alllowed? Can you pass? Seems like this is not going to work and most people are just not seeing that. It also seems like you or however is in charge is catering to 4x4's. Do the people over there have any idea how many sport quads visit the forest on a yearly basis? There are way more sport's than 4x4's out there on any given day. We all pay the tax dollars, we all should be able to enjoy.

Grizz: Is there any way you can provide us with a list of people who are making these decisions please?

I am sure some emails with ideas and thoughts will go along way.

Thanks

I think you feel like you make all the rules for ONF. Honestly, I do! You constantly come up with rules to please yourself and what you like. What's considered fast to you may be slow to someone else and vice versa. When we do speedrides we ride fast when it's appropriate and safe. Last I checked the forest was for everyone that wanted to ride and enjoy the forest. Not just for you and your set ways my friend  ;)

I only answered with what had been proven at the forum in May by the experts.  They have been involved in the design and development of many great trail systems.  It is these experts that were behind the Forest Service and how they designed this system.  What I was stating was not my opinion, but was why they put the two way trails instead of one way.  The Forest Service was involved in the start of the Tread Lightly program, and believes that in order to make the trail system sustainable, it must adhere to those principles.  Believe me, I know that different speeds are acceptable, but the purpose of ONFA is to make sure we have places to continue to ride.  If you do not agree, so be it, everyone is allowed their own opinion.

We are working on providing a group ride on the new Trail System in the end on September or October.  We want to introduce everyone to the New Trail system and the ONFA.  Keep watching this forum for dates and directions.  We will probably start and end at the OHV Center (old Seed Orchard) on FR 88 and travel on the new Longleaf Trail. Their will be both a long ride and a short ride.  We are going to use the OHV Center so that we do not over burden any one trail Head.

6/22 Date of Ride Determined

If you are interested, Post in this forum, like we did on the old Rodman Rides, so we can get a count.
Ok I'll be there with one or two riders but how do I get to the OHV Center on FR 88 I know where Rodman Dam is but never been to FR88 ?

Hey Grizzly, I stay at Elite in Salt Springs and have ridden some newly marked trails in that area off of highway 316.  Really nice and was marked with the flat markers.  Is this the same area you are referring to.  I will be up there for the labor day weekend.   Last time i was up there we met some rangers and they were advising us of the new changes.  I followed the markers to the T and didnt have any issues and rode responsibly. Would like to have you be more specific as to where everyone is meeting.
Thanks

The meeting place is what is now called the OHV center.  Many people may remember it as the Seed Orchard.  It is located about 3 miles north of Hwy 316 (between Salt Springs and Eureka) on Forest Road 88.  This is a dirt road and takes you into about the middle of the trail system.  It is a large fenced in area that the Forest Service will let us use for group rides, so that we do not overwhelm any trailhead.  We are trying to make this the grand opening of the trail system and a introduction to the ONFA at the same time.  We will be doing a membership push at that time.  We are hoping to have TV and the newspapers there.

We already have about 70 people signed up, so we will be doing many rides.  We will try to cover some of the trails that are for motorcycle only, atv only and multi-use trails.  The multi-use trails will allow rhinos, kubotas, rangers and the arctic cat unit like the rhino.

As a sponsored ride, we can only allow what the manufacturer says the vehicle is built for.  If it says no riders, then that is all we can allow.  Regarding helmets, we suggest you wear them, and if you are under 16, you must (state law)

what about the guys that are into GNCC racing? There are no tracks for that , so the woods is where they practice.

60 plus riders so far.  Remember, we are starting at the OHV center, but we are going to have more then one ride. We will have shorter rides for families with small kids, ride for dirt bikes on the motorcycle trail, ride for sport quads so you can go a little faster and one that takes you on the atv only section of the trails.  Bring your lunch, we have plenty of room to picnic (though not much in the shade).

316 is in Salt Springs it only runs to the West from Hwy 19. It's right where the entrance to Elite campground is. It is south of Delancy.

If your coming south from Palatka on 19 you will cross a large bridge over the cross florida barge canal. It's right where you enter the forest. First road across the bridge going West is the road you want to take. You will cross the dam, take the road till it ends, park there and start riding.

Come on lil man. Don't jump if you can't swim. Everyone knows it is 90% rider/ 10% bike (some even say 95:5) so the fact that he rides a Banshee means absolutely nothing to me. Either way, I know for a fact that he does not ride a Banshee so it really does not matter.

Have a great day

i dont jump in cause i cant swim (really). anyway like i said she is a girl and like you said 90% rider 10% bike. the bike is fast. she dont ride fast. girls dont ride fast (at least in most cases). so like you said 90% rider and 10%bike.

o btw why does that say he? you said your friends wife. o well.

Alright all you self proclaimed "sport riders" you might have the equipment but do you know how to use it.
I've been asked to lead those that want a faster paced ride. So how fast and how far do you want to go? I'm going to do some pre-riding this weekend and see what I can come up with. Trail conditions (dust) and the #of riders will make a big difference in what we are able to do. I'm thinking pack a Camelpack and fill your tanks and we'll start with about a 50 mile loop.
My wife and 3 kids will be doing the regular ride and we will probably meet back up at the starting point for lunch.
I've ridden with some of you in the past and looking forward to meeting some new people.

I forgot to mention that because of the faster pace of the sport ride only Yamaha riders will be allowed to join us. Honda riders will have to ride with the women and children. :-*  Git it RAG :drive.gif

I suggest you be nice on the "it's because she's a girl" comments.  There are several women on this site that could very likely out ride ya.  Nothin' worse than eatin' crow.  Nice to see you caught yourself on the second comment.  Now realize I'm not talking about me cause I am just learning how to get the bike out of first gear.  I have to get off and push it across the water due to lack of power and speed.  Watch out for Mrs.Nightbreed, and Jen Albright though.  They'll put you to shame.

Oh man! I am riding the 400 EX now. Made some mods and she is screaming. Honestly, she was fast enough stock. Can't wait Matt. I hope it is cool if my wife and kid stay close to your family, I think the women will get along great. They will also be in a Rhino.

Maybe so but you obviously haven't met the women I ride w/.  I know many women on this site that ride utes and sports that can ride every bit as well as the majority of the men here.  I'm still on a ute and she'll only go 60mph.  So I'm still running slow.  When I get my z400 next year it'll take some seat time before I'm up there w/ y'all.  Have no doubt though unless someone slow is in front of me you won't be waiting 15 minutes.

I did some riding today on the new trails. Since I'm leading the sport ride I thought that it would be a good idea to try and stay on the new trails. They are not marked worth a crap, you come to a fork in the trail and there is no sign to tell you which way to go. They still have a lot of work to do. Going back out tomorrow to ride it some more, now that I think I have it figured out. The ATV pipeline trail is pretty cool because it is either new or really old and not very used. There are some really tight and twisty sections (if your bike and helmet arent scratched up, they will be), some fast sections and plenty of whoops.  Also lots of logs down and plenty of pointed branches waiting to impale you.  I cant give a total mileage for the ride because my GPS turns off in the whoops.

Could you please take a shovel with you and level off the whoops a bit so it won't be so rough?   And if you have time trim some of those pointy branches.............J/K thanks for doing the homework to make the ride a success  :ThumbsUp.gif

Went back out today and rode a few more hours, the Pipeline trail is just plain not well marked. I had a trail map and a GPS and its not easy to follow. I'm going to go back up and pre ride some more to get our route dialed in. There are quite a few sections that are new and not beat down at all, barely wide enough to fit through. Those areas will give you guys an idea of what the XC races are like. I'm guessing that it will be around 50 miles.
By the way I saw a fox, a deer, and a bear on my ride this afternoon.

under 16, it is required, not if you are over that age.
