Title: Fixin up a 4x4 truck..need help
Post by: Ynot0323 on May 26, 2006, 10:01:20 AM
A friend of mine, is giving me his 1984 Chevy K5 Blazer, and said the only thing he knows is wrong, is obviously dead battery ( hasnt been run in a few yrs ) and he says the ignition will turn, but you cannot shift into any gears..

Would this be ignition switch, ignition or possibly even transmission linkage cable ?!?!

I do not have the truck in my possession yet, but hopefully this weekend will be getting it towed to my house..

Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated..

THANKS,
Tony

My e-mail is Ynot0323@aol.com if you have any large amt's of info to pass along..

well your first step is to isolate the problem. its either in the tranny, linkage,or steering column.

open the hood and follow the steering column down. your gonna see an arm with a 1/2 inch head bolt which connects a rod to the tranny. remove that bolt and try to move the shifter.
if it moves then your problem is either linkage or tranny. if it doesnt then its in your column.

Ok i will make sure to check that when i get it...

i figure what the heck, even if i put $1500 into it, thats all i would have into it..

I am not sure if i am going to make it a "off-road" rig or keep it as a street driver and use it off-roading..

I like the 4x4 for towing my boat, out of the ramps ( pretty steep and sometimes slick )

THANKS,
Tony

no i dont have any suggestions but a free truck is a free truck. If you need to you could get a transmission for 50bucks at a junk yard. post some pics of it

I got a local Transmission shop that has done work on 2 of my vehicles..

Very Reasonable price, i would rather spend the $$ and fix it right the first time, then have to worry, if and WHEN it is going to break again..

I will try to get some pictures.. I prob wont get it until either middle of the week or the weekend, his dad has to empty some stuff out of it, and all that good stuff..

You've got one of last the solid axle 4wd drives Chevy made. They make great offroad rigs and are relatively inexpensive to repair, lift and maintain. They are farely easy to work on and  yours being an 84 i think is not fuel injected which is a good thing .

As for the possible linkage problem , you were given a good suggestion .
Cut the problem in half its either in the column or down in the tranny. What will make it easier would be to get underneath it and under the linkage at the tranny ,see if it moves.
Its not too hard to isloate the problem . I found the shop manuals handy for my K10 .
Take care of it, Chevy quit making real 4wds in 1988 when they went with the IFS .

Good luck

Ok, what is wrong with efi? Better milage, no jetting, can be ran at steep angles(boat ramp). Anyway if you need parts for that truck then visit www.lmctruck.com They have everything you could need OEM for your truck. So I would look them up. Good luck with your truck and im with them, even if you have to drop a few grand into it then you still got a compotent off roader for a few thousand dollars!

I am thinking of making it a every day street driver and use it to tow my boat, the 4x4 would come in handy at one of the ramps we launch from..

It also has the tow package, which will come in handy for my scrap metal business ( towing 3000 lbs )

THANKS and will post pics as soon as i get some..

I guess there is nothin wrong with efi for the most part . I want nothing to do with it deep in the woods .
I swapped an efi  motor in my buggy and it ran fine 'till I went into a deep hole. Once  the ecm(which controls the timing for the injectors) got wet the motor was dead .
Carbs might run like crap but they'll run and you  wont need a ODB II reader in the woods to trouble shoot an automotive computer.
