Title: Need New Engine Suggestions
Post by: qt314nfla on May 10, 2006, 03:08:17 PM
Ok, I have a delima and need some suggestions.  My wolverine is ready for an engine rebuild, total cost $2400.  I have too much into this bike right now to sell it and get another one.  I'm looking to see if anyone has a connection on a new '99 Wolverine engine and what the cost would be after shipping and taxes.

If you have any other suggestions on this please let me know.

The engine is in bad shape.  The shop said they have no clue how this bike started none the less was running.  It needs:

Piston, Rings, Bearing, Clutches, Rods, Seals, & Gaskets.  The engine as it sits needs to be punched out 1+.  It has dirt, sand, and water through out the engine.

I'm not sure there's anything to part out on it or what I would even get considering the shape I've been told it's in.

If the engine is bad. You still have the rest of the drivetrain. Plus a bunch of other small parts. Shocks. Tires, wheels, steering, plastics, differential. tranny. Ect. Ect.

Honestly, you say you want a sport bike.. Well, im sure you could pick up a Z400 for 3grand in great condition.. I wouldnt pay $2,400 for a 7 year old bike unless it was a 250r. With the bike running, I highly doubt you would even get $2,300 unless it was showroom condition.

Go ahead and buy that sport bike, you will enjoy it just as much, if not more!

I want a sport bike but I also want a ute.  I would like 2 bikes so I can be a part of all the rides.  I can't come up w/ the money for an aftermarket Z.  I don't want a sport quad that's stock.  I'm just trying to figure out what the cheapest and easiest way I have to get back to riding.  At this point it's looking like I might be riding blizatch for the next year until I can afford to fix it or buy another.  I still don't want to get rid of the wolverine unless I have to or there's a better cheaper way to get back to riding.

At this point if I get rid of it I have $500 invested in the tear down and gas to get the bike to the shop.  So that'd be like tossing it out the window of my truck.  I haven't even got that much saved up and can't afford what's been done to it so far.  Please keep coming up w/ suggestions.

I have no clue about how to do anything on e-bay as far as parting the bike that's completely foreign to me.

you can pick up 400exs for suprisingly cheap now, also an 03 or 04 z400 is a fairly cheep bike also

sell it for what you owe the shop and walk away clean. then get the sport quad ;)

there is no good answer. you need a friend that can do all the work if you buy the parts, other than that your outa luck :(

if you need to feel better about it just look back at all the good times you had on it and ask yourself if you would have paid that much $ for that much fun ;)

.. 2400$ is pretty steep.. there is a lower end on Ebay its missing the jug and clutch pack.. the upper end is the same as the warrior/big bear so those parts wont be too hard to find.. what shop tore it down??....it sounds like you swamped the engine so every moving part is wiped out

Yes, she might have got it wet a time or two.

QT, sell it for what you can. Get a new one and make payments. Less money each month, and now.
Then later on when things get going better, you can pay it off.

Moose, you have to remember she just bought a Yosh pipe, she completely rebuilt the rear end (ring and pinion, oil seals, bearings), new front universal joints, new durablue rear axle, the 424 is less than a year old.  So really once the engine is rebuilt she is going to have a NEW 1999 quad.

Look at it this way, if someone gave you a quad (of your choice) and said here its yours but it has a blown engine.  Chances are your going to have the engine fixed cause its hard to find a quad in good mechanical shape for $2000.  Just my opinion.

I say rebuild it and make it onto the BIONIC Wolverine!!!  ;);D 8)

I can't afford to make payments.  Well I can but I have to give up putting gas in the blue beast to do it.  I don't like making payments.  If I don't have cash it means I can't reasonably afford it.  I've already got almost a grand into the parts freak mentioned.  And for another 2400 I get a new bike.  That's the cheapest way out after doing the math.

I could get another used engine but after what I've seen I take the risk of spending a grand or more on the engine and having to do a rebuild on it as well.

I'll be on the site and I may be out at some of the rides going blizatch.  See y'all on the trails on my own bike in a year or so.  Unless by the grace of god something changes.

Ida,

Yea the Wolvi uses the warrior engine but the lower portion of the case is different due to the Wolvi being 4 wheel drive.  I'm thinking its probably closer to the 350 Big Bear (same engine, I think)

Be careful with used engines on ebay. I purchased a 96 model engine for a 94 model quad and the wiring was different. I then had the get a wiring harness for a 96. By the time I got everything and started the engine, the engine smoked worse then the one that I took out. I was not happy but it was too long to try to get ebay to do anything.

I forgot about all the upgrades.

In light of that, I would rebuild the engine.

Just ride it for a while to get your money back out of it.

ive bought several engines for seadoo from SBT.. they can give you an exchange engine cheaper than buying all the parts yourself plus a year warranty.. i think they have gotten into atv and motorcycle engines.

There aren't any crate engines for the bike.  Seems everyone has been calling around to offer suggestions but they aren't working.

In the mean time please enjoy the following pic of my engine.

Sorry QT but that pic of your piston is why NOT to run a K/N filter on a trail bike. I'd bet that thing has been sunk a time or two also. Those pics of bikes with water up to the handlebars make me cringe because I know what it does to a bike.
Can you beg the shop that its at to feel sorry for you and give it all back at no charge? If you can, maybe I can put you in touch with someone that would help you out.
