Title: Mechanics PLEASE help
Post by: SlowestYfz450 on February 23, 2006, 01:34:10 AM
about a week ago we went and bought a car, it was a great deal from my old bosses parents. We make the money and title exchange, we pull out of the drive way, and not 1/2 mile down the road the radiator explodes! so i take the car back to the guy and after like an hour of arguing he gives me money back. So tonight we go buy a car from my moms friend. They tell me it has 137k on it, needed front break pads and a valve cover gasket. She told me it had rotors done about 6-7 months ago. Well i dropped 200 on breaks cause the rotors where stock, and the back breaks needed done aswell. Then i find out it not only needs the valve cover gasket it needs a main seal or camshaft seal. So now I have this car that leaks so much oil im affraid to drive it, they put stop leak in the oil so that it wouldnt leak untill i got home. Any mechanic that can help me out please do, price for the seal and gaskets i need and how hard is the work. Can i do it myself or does it have to be paid for. 1987 cutlass ciera 3.3L V6 please help :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Sounds like a rear main seal , its not the part thats exspensive its the labor (needs to have the tranny pulled to get to it ) what kind of car is it year, make model

if you see the oil coming down where the tranny and engine meet, then its prob. the rear main seal. the problem is that it is a one piece seal and yes you do have to drop the tranny. the seal is relatively cheap(around 20.00)but considering its a front wheel drive the labor can be expensive(a couple hundred bucks). i would verify that it is the rear main seal before jumping to conclusions. also where are you located at?

the motor is set in side by side, the the fan runs front to back on the left side and the oil is coming from the middle of the motor, that is why i was lead to believe its not the rear main seal. its a 87 cutlass Ciera 3.3L v6. and im located it ringgold GA

when you say the middle of the motor do you mean the middle of the car or the middle if the engine tranny assembly.

an oil leak from the middle of the motor would not be rear main. a leak between the engine and the tranny would be the rear main.

good luck, let me know if you need anything.

when i look directly at the motor the oil seems to be coming from the front left hand side of the motor......... and its getting on the belt and being flung straight up to the hood and all over the Alt.

if its in the front of the motor then its def. not the rear main seal.
could possibly be the front crank seal(which isnt that big a deal).
i am not sure but i believe the oil pressure switch may be in that general area as well. if its flinging oil all over the belt then its probably the front crankshaft seal.
look underneath and see if you see it dripping behind the main pulley(crank). if it is then probably the front crankshaft seal.

i'm thinking it'l run ya about 100-150 bucks.
