Title: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Ida_Mann on January 28, 2006, 07:23:13 PM I was 8 years old and in second grade gifted class at Ferncreek Elementary school and our teacher let us go out to the teacher's parking lot to watch the launch once we saw it lift off from the pad on the TV in the classroom.
The only thing I knew at that age was that something had gone wrong and this was no fireworks show. I know that the loss of 7 people seems insignifigant in light of the thousands lost on 9-11, but to me it still creates a lump in my throat to think of them. I am a child of the 80's. Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Moose on January 28, 2006, 08:38:56 PM I was reclined on my couch in Largo watching it on TV, had the day off work, talking to my girlfriend on the phone. At the moment she blew, I was just looking at the ceiling talking on the phone, missed the ball of fire. It had become routine, and she had made it pretty high up, so I as many others I'm sure thought all was well. A coworker of my girlfriend ran into her office and told her what happened, so I went outside to see it. I still can't believe it happened, and I saw it.

Watched the whole thing unfold through my windsheild. It truly was a bad day for the crew of Challenger , the workers and folks of the Space Coast and the USA. I was so bummed that I wouldn't look up to the sky for weeks. God Bless them all.
Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Honda328i on January 29, 2006, 01:47:32 PM Can't be 20 years ago ??? I was a junior in High school in New Mexico. Happened to be in the library, and saw it on tv live. They just played it over and over again, hoping that somehow they could see something emerge that would rest everyone's worst fears. I will never forget that they said they went looking for survivors in the ocean, but everyone knew otherwise. This was one of 3 times in my life I remember feeling the shock and horror. The others being OK city and 9-11 of course.
God indeed bless their families and we will not soon forget their courage and bravery in making America's space program #1. Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Bo322 on January 29, 2006, 03:38:44 PM I drove a 20yd dump truck on my days off from the fire house. I was heading north on US 1 and pulled over to watch as the shuttle cleared the horizon. The morning was beautiful, not a cloud in the sky. The lauch was amazing, as usual, until it happened. I knew immediately that I had witnessed a terrible tragedy. I had seen every launch since the inception of the shuttle program so when I saw the giant explosion......I knew it wasn't good.
I stopped at a pay phone to call a buddy and he confirmed it. The shuttle had some type of major malfunction. God bless the crew and families of space shuttle Challenger. Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: renmus on January 29, 2006, 04:00:51 PM Was at work. The guys had come to get me to go out to watch the sky to see the launch. For the very first time I said no, that I really just didnt want to watch this time. I am so glad I didn't. As far as OK City, I understand one of the fellows has gotten out on parole. The one who knew it was to take place, but did nothing to try to stop it.

Post by: cubnfrank on January 29, 2006, 08:15:19 PM I was in Ft Lauderdale, I was in Techincal school, I was on my way back from lunch at McDonalds and I heard on the radio there was a problem with the launch. I get back to school and everybody is in the parking lot looking up at the sky. Then someone told me what happened. It was a clear cold day. You could see that smoke trail as clear as day from Ft. Lauderdale. It seems like the smoke trail in the stayed in the sky all day.
Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: themensh on January 29, 2006, 08:17:56 PM I was stationed at Patrick Air Force Base (about 13 miles south of the Space Center). I was working the midnite shift at the 2179th Communications Center. I got off work about 6Am....went home and fell asleep on the couch. My Brother-in_law in Texas called me and told me that he had had a Son that morning...........and did I see the 'explosion?"
I walked outside to see the now infamous plumes in the sky............ A "response-crew" was hurridly formed.............and hours later, people were scouring the beaches for debris. (A co-worker I knew found a 'glove'). Challenger will remind us that there is danger in any undertaking............. (and THEY were wearing HELMETS). Chuck Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Mrs.Nightbreed on January 30, 2006, 07:40:43 AM I was in 1st grade sitting in the cafeteria for lunch. I didn't see it happen. I remember seeing the plume of smoke afterwards and I thought it was neat because it didn't look like the other shuttle trails. It had a ball in the middle then 2 trails. I didn't understand what happened until I got home and my mom explained it to me.
It was definately a sad day in our history :'( Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: BCConviber on January 30, 2006, 07:53:27 AM Well... I was bad,bad kid... I was in 7th grade, and we had all assembled in the cafeteria to watch the launch on TV in good old Coral Springs. I don't remember exactly what I said, but I maid some kind of really bad comment about there being one less teacher in the world.... And promptly got a butt whipping from pops and a week off of school. :(

A matter of minutes later people were running around screaming and crying. Suzi was at work as well. Jeff While I was at work, we had a ritual of everyone to the same spot on the second floor to watch... I worked with a lot of engineering geeks, after the shuttle would go off we would all cheer and back to work. So when the explosion happened we were all in shock and we spent the rest of the day analyzing the situation. I do remember turning white as a sheet, some were in shock, some left work. I had a hard time watching the next one take off :'( Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: DCR_Marcus14 on January 30, 2006, 02:37:54 PM 20 years...that would make me -2 years old.

Its funny how you can remember details of events like that. Ask me what i ate yesterday and I couldnt tell you. But I remember that and 9/11 down to a tee. Title: Re: Where were you 20 years ago? Post by: Loven It on January 30, 2006, 03:31:29 PM I was in 3rd grade in Cape Hatteras, NC. Home from school for some reason. We were sitting on the floor in front of the tv when it happened. I remember it like it was yesterday. Not sure if's it because of how upset my mom got or the images that they showed over and over again of the shuttle bursting into a big ball of fire.

Post by: KB on January 31, 2006, 07:34:54 PM i was in 3rd grade at bellamy elem. school. (town & country, tampa). whole school went outside to watch. i remember seeing it go up and then seeing it split into two seperate smoke trails. we thought everything was ok till we went inside and teachers were watching tv crying. to be honest, i forgot all about it till about 10 yrs ago, on way to work, bubba played audio tapes of astronauts last words on the radio. i think they were just released for public record at that time and thats why he played it. bubba wanted people to hear it cause nasa really tried covering that accident up. the company that made those boosters said dont launch, but each launch delay costs millions, nasa launched it anyway. if anybody hasn't heard the audio you need to find it on the net and listen to it. i promise you'll hate nasa after hearing those astronauts telling there loved ones by. somebody told me if they put as much money into the basic telescope that we would know the same info. as we know from the shuttle ?
