My dog Sprocket got hit by a car today. The car was going entirely too fast and hit him. Not straight on. He didn't get "ran over" just thrown a bit. He peed himself and ripped a toenail. He also has scrapes on his back leg. He won't put it all the way on the ground, so I know it is swollen and sore. I felt around and I don't feel anything poking out to indicate a brake and he does not wimper or snap if I bend it. I know he is feeling rough though. It really looked terrible when it happened! and the guy just kept on going! JERK!  Angry

Anyway, when we got home I washed him up and put Bactine on the sores. My question is: Is it safe to give him 1 IB Profin pill to help wuith swelling and pain? He is a hound mix weighing approx. 45lbs

sucks about the dog, mines was hit by a car a few months ago, when we got him back from the pound(he ran away when he got hit) we didnt really give him anything, i think it was tylenol or something we put in his food bowl, we just made sure he had alot of water.

I did a quick search online for 'dog first aid.'  There was mention of being able to give aspirin.  It didn't recommend giving them.  I don't know enough to say one way or another.  Sorry I don't know a vet I can reach.  It did recommend keeping your pet from licking the area by cleaning and bandaging it.  Ice is always a good thing to reduce swelling if you can get him to tolerate it.  I wouldn't keep it on for more than 5-10 minutes.

You may consider PMing GSPKurt.  He resues german short haired pointers and may have some more info on what you can do.  Sorry I couldn't be any help.  I hope things go well until you can get to a vet.  I've sent him a PM asking if he can help you.

Get that dog to the vet in the AM. Watch for blood in urine or stools. Watch for vomiting. All signs of internal bleeding. ONLY aspirin. 125mg or less every 4-6 hours.

Give aspirin with a handful of food to reduce stomach upset. Make sure it has water available.

He was definately being watched over! His leg should feel better in a couple days and his sore will heel up just like any other sore.

Thanks for the help!  Smiley

I am glad to hear there weren't any more serious injuries. I hope I was able to help. I know the helpless feeling when your dog is injured and you don't know what to do. There are a few good first aid books available for canine first aid that you might consider reading or buying. I keep a few things in a dog first aid kit for emergencies.

They are-

Benadryl
Baby aspirin
Large roll of Vet-Wrap (Tractor Supply)
Large 4x4 gauze pads
antibiotic ointment
adhesive tape (medical type)
roll gauze wrap
EMT gel (TSC)
sterile eye wash- NOT Visine- to flush eyes or a wound
antibiotic eye ointment (TSC)
hemostats (2) for removing porcupine quills
tweezers and/or forceps
scissors (bandage-removal type)
muzzle
disposable ice pack
glucose tablets
cotton swabs

I am also considering adding a surgical stapler, but am told this is not a good idea, as if the wound is not totally clean, it can cause more harm than good.

This is for my bird dogs, and you might have most of this at home, but I keep it all in an empty baby wipes container in my bag with my dog training supplies so I don't forget it. You can modify this list to suit your needs, of course.
