I've noticed that the old 250r quads are still very popular with racers etc. I'm assuming then, they are still great bikes. My question is: what are the equivalent to with regards to new bikes? The YFZ 450s? The Z400s?

Was a YFZ 450 Rider...then the kids came along...now looking to get back to it!

Ya I would say that any 450cc quad is a decent comparison. The R is a combination of great power, handling, and lightweight. Argumentably the best quad ever made. For being almost 20 yrs since production it still has a huge aftermarket. If you can find a nice one I'd get one. You don't see them too often. Which is cool to see quads that you not used to seeing.  -Mark

I raced a 250R for years. I loved it and wouldn't have traded it for anything. I now own a 450R and like the smooth power of the 4 stroke. It is easier to ride and I have gotten a lot faster since I switch to a 4 stroke. To answer your question, unless a 250R has a big bore kit it won't touch a piped 450.

I think everyone knows that I am a 250R fan, but I just think the two stroke is more fun to ride. In a Mx situation, I feel that a 330cc R is no different in track speed than the 4 strokes. They both have pros and cons, its all in what you prefer.

The chassis is where the difference comes in. If you want the best ride possible, my opinion would be an aftermarket 250r chassis cr500 or crf450 link, with a CRF450R engine.

The production bikes today do not handle as well as the aftermarket R bikes did. They are getting closer, but not there yet.

I have both, 250R(310cc's actually) and a YFZ450.

I think on track with good traction... Gatorback, Hard Rock etc
You can't touch an "R" even with a piped up 450. The power
comes on soo fast you don't have to wait to build speed.

But now on a loamy track it is easier to ride a 450 fast because
you can be "lazy" with your shifting. They are just not as technical
to ride, 4 strokes that is.

Jeremiah Jones decimated a field of custom 450 quads a few years
back... and that was on a 265cc machine.

He has not got back to that speed since. Also you'll notice that
riding style changes too, most all 4 stroke riders look the same
on the track now.

In the end... I just love to ride whatever it is that I am on at the time.
