I am acquiring a 05' DRZ125 in a trade deal. Are they supposed to come with a title or a Bill of sale only? If it's just a Bill of Sale is it possibly a stolen bike?

Thanks!

It may have a lein on the title if it was financed and never paid off.  You may be able to check out the status of the title on the DMV website using the VIN, if it was originally purchased in FL.

What state did it come from...some states don't require titles on OHV's.

Either way it should come with a Certificate of Origin from the manufacturer...if the bike has never been titled.

My guess would be the same as Tnt's, it's likely had finance and was never paid off...or someone skipped transferring title on a previous sale which can make it hard/impossible to get a title in your name.

You need paperwork to walk into your tag office...either a previous title or a Cert of Origin and a bill of sale...from the person listed on the certificate.

If some mutant tells you to buy a Certificate of Origin from the Internet, you'll remain vulnerable to prosecution of at least two laws, if caught. You can be caught in a number of ways, including when you attempt to title a stolen vehicle Ithaca vehicle with a lien or you attempt to resell it to guys like me. If you don't title it, you cannot operate it on public lands without risk of prosecution. BTW, there will be mutants who dispute these facts because they've no liability.

It is a Florida bike. He bought it off craigslist apparently and only got a Bill of Sale with the bike...

You are not going to be able to get it registered without the title.

Run, I would not mess with it, too many issues without a clean title, there are many a bike or quad with titles and a lot less hassles.

Ran the VIN# and it came back with a lien on the title out of Minnesota.

Thanks for all the help guys, definitely not taking the bike on trade.

No shortage of thieves out there!

That's an understatement and their numbers are growing.  I've lost 3 bicycles lately and they stole the tailgate off my truck last week.....   Angry
