Polaris Hawkeye Not Starting
«
on:
August 27, 2009, 06:35:10 PM »
Bike has been sitting for a few months now and was just getting ready to prep it for coming hunting season..
Bilke won't seem to fire at all? I have changed the plug and removed the gas and put fresh gas in it. It just turns and turns and won't fire?
ANy help what to look for? Rather not take it to shop if I can avoid it..
thanks

see if it would start on ether. if it does then that will tell you that your carburetor is full of varnish from old gas. more than likely the needle is stuck closed and not allowing fuel into the carburetor.

Yea tried pull and key still nothing looks like no gas indeed as the new plug still clean even when I tried Full choke to start it??
Is there a way to get to it to start or move the needle?

Really no easy way to explain how to clean the carb other than take it apart and put it back together... start by removing it from the air cleaner and cylinder boots.. once you get that done, unhook the throttle cable.
maybe a TPS sensor, some vent lines and you're out.
once you are at this point with the carb in your hand, turn it over and you should see the float bowl, or commonly called the "bowl". Should be held on by 4 or more little screws, either allen head or phillips. Remove these.
Slide the bowl off and inspect, take some carb/choke cleaner and spray off any color that looks like contaminated metals..usually a brownish gold color. Its ok to use a scrub pad, or toothbrush to remove any debris.
Next, there should be 3 copper screws that look like they have holes in them, unscrew them one by one, cleaning and replacing them as you are finished. If you can, find an e string off an electric guitar, the first e, not the big one. once you free up some or any thing clogged up, blow it out with either your mouth or with a low stream of air from an air chuck.
next, look at the floats that are dangling off the carb, clean them with a toothbrush and carb/choke cleaner.
replace everything how it came off and see if it fires. All of this should take less than an hour, but go at your own pace so you dont become confused.
come back with the results.

If this bike has a TPS sensor, just unhook it. Do not remove it from the side of the carburetor.
