How to block a web page completely?
«
on:
April 07, 2008, 05:32:20 PM »
I have an employee that is using my computers to look at porn at my shop.... I am trying to figure out how to block certin web pages and what I have done so far hasn't worked. I know he should be fired but that right now is not an option. I am running XP on that computer. Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks in advance

You should be able to block sites at the router.

You wont have an effective solution for free, but the most used filtering program is WebSense.
http://www.websense.com/global/en/
Most of the school districts as well as government agencies use this to keep everyone on the right page. Pun intended. Good luck

lol, good luck trying to find all the porn sites across the web to add to that. Its a good plan in theory, but youd be spending all your time adding sites to restrcit access to. The best thing to use would be a program that filters cvertain content altogether.

You could try blackmail. Leave a hidden camera in the office where the computer is, and let the magic happen. After that, you'll be able to get him to work for free

You will definately need a 3rd party software such as websense or Netnanny.
Had a guy I got an IT job for, mentored him for the position and then he took over. A few months later I was called down for a favor work on the network as a few critical apps weren't functioning. After a bit of investigation I found that the guy had been downloading porn at his desk, burning it to disk, and locking himself in the server closet to watch it all on the servers as well as browse porn on the web.
He got the fax server saturated with viruses and malware as well as caused the firewall to autoblock ports. It was a mess.
Needless to say his a$$ was canned!!!

man I can't get into my stupid router I have tried 192.168.1.1 , 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.1.2 , 192.168.1.34 (which is what my ipconfig said it was) I didn't set this router up so I am not sure if I am locked out. This stuff starts to go over my head. Any ideas?

from a command prompt, run ipconfig. The address for your gateway will be your router.

I did that... cmd then ipconfig and it was 192.168.1.1 but when I put it in the explorer it doesn't load it

And after you pull the cable out, create a new hole by using your pistol and run the cable back through.

If you could be more specific with the model of the router, it would be easier to help.
Make and model on the router, I can get you into the setup page.

Remove the computer? Move the computer to a secured room and lock it with the only key on you? Monitor the guy's movements so you can get him off the computer?
Threaten with calling the cops? (Just trying to give you ideas)

You can always stick a paperclip in the reset hole if .255 doesn't work and you know how to set it up again.

Youll have to reset the router, and use the default login:
http://192.168
.1.1
For the login, its usually
user: admin
password: password
or user: leave blank
password: admin

Actually, since yours is a switch, instead of 192. try using
127.0.0.1
in your internet explorer url field.

127.0.0.1 is actually the local loopback (the computers network adapter) so that won't work. By default D-Link routers have an ip address of 192.168.0.1 . Have you tried that?
I agree with a couple of earlier posters. Sit the guy down and talk to him and lay down the law.

Filtering the websites electronically is not the answer to whatever the problem is. I understand you've told him this is not ok and he does it anyway, but without knowing the whole situation it is hard to offer any real help. The main thing that is missing from your post is why there is a problem with him looking at porn to began with. Is he doing this on a machine that customers can see? If so you need to explain to him why that is a problem, and then you maybe you could simply move the computer, or change around the view of the monitor so they can't see it. Is he looking at pron, playing games, etc... when he should be working? If so, simply blocking the sites isn't going to fix you problem. He'll just do something else. Are you in an area where phonograph is illegal? If so you need to explain he is breaking the law and putting your business is risk.
Is the problem simply that it is offending you? Well you are the boss, but in my time in IT I've worked at places with strict anti-porn rules, and places where the bosses had virtual girl on their desktops. The former always had many more problems with this kind of thing then the later. Most people can respect rules, even ones they don't agree with, better then out right prohibition.

I agree that filtering is rarely effective, but I have set up numerics companies with 'allow only' business specific IP's on routers or firewalls due to the limited upstream on some satellite internet systems, and they don't have any problems after that with ANY sort of abuse...other than browsing benign sites they don't consider 'wasting company time' after that...people are funny.
The price you pay to lock it down entirely without employing a full time IT guy to monitor everything.

The problem is I pay THOUSANDS for computer equipment and those porn site are full of viruses and I have already had to replace a computer he was on. Also the fact that when he is at work and on the clock I don't pay him to play games and look at porn. I also realize if I am getting viruses I do not have sufficent virus protection. I guess I am going to have to spend more money to have a company setup my network so I dont have anymore problems. Thanks for the info

It seems the solution to all your problems is password all the PC's.
If your computers have sensitive personal and business data that should already be in place with some encryption in the event of theft.
If the guy needs internet access for some reason, turn on the wireless and get him a cheap old ebay laptop.

Well, yes, you need correctly running and updated anti-virus if your running Windows based PCs. However, as far as your problem, most places actually pay their employees to do work, rather then to fill seats at desks. What I am trying to say is that if your looking at what any employee is doing your going to find non-productive time. People need to take takes breaks, have distractions, etc... What is useful is to look at what the employee is producing. If he is doing the work load he should in the time he should, who cares what else he is doing, (provided it is legal and not hurting the company.)

When I worked for a certain car dealership, they had a main webpage and set up a "intranet" where you could only visit a set amount of links and during lunch hours they had more links to where you could do online shopping, the news and more appropriate sites for break time.
See if you can have someone set you up with a intranet.
