The following link takes you to the National Tax Payers Union web site. The page has tables for each of the years, from 1999-2005, that depict what percentage of the total federal income tax the different categories of wage earners paid. Of interest is the fact that the tax burden for the bottom 50% of wage earners has dropped from 4% of the total tax bill in 1999 to 3.07% in 2005. That is very close to a 25% decrease during the tenure of the current administration. At the other end of the spectrum, the tax burden for the upper 1% of wage earners increased from 36.18% to 39.38% during the same time period. For the upper 25% of wage earners the tax burden increased from 83.54% to 85.99%.
The media would have you believe that the tax cuts implemented by the current administration have hurt the lower half of the wage earners and benefited the rich. The factual data indicates that the opposite is the reality. The democrat party has made it clear that, if given the opportunity, they will sunset the tax cuts and push for even higher taxes. This will result in an increased tax burden for all wage earners.
One year from now we will all be asked to elect a new president. All of the seats in Congress are also up for grabs. This will be a very pivotal time for our country. The tax issue is but one of many that we will need to consider. All of us need to become better educated, regarding the issues, and not rely solely on the main stream media for our education. We then need to go to the polls, exercise our right to vote, and make informed choices. Our country will be better off for our efforts.
