Oil prices' climb toward $100 slowed By JOHN WILEN, AP Business Writer
38 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Oil prices stalled in their climb toward $100 a barrel Wednesday after a government report said oil inventories fell less than expected last week while refinery utilization remained flat.

Oil investors largely viewed the report as neutral in that it confirmed a view that oil supplies are falling, but offered no real surprises. A larger than expected drop would most certainly have propelled oil past $100 a barrel for the first time.

Crude inventories did fall at the closely-watched New York Mercantile Exchange delivery terminal in Cushing, Okla., but that did not appear to be enough to propel prices higher.

"We got kind of a mixed reaction," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago.

Light, sweet crude for December delivery fell 33 cents to settle at $96.37 a barrel on the Nymex. Before the report's release, prices rose as high as $98.62, a new record. Trading was volatile, with futures falling by nearly $2 a barrel at times in afternoon trading.

At the pump, meanwhile, the national average price of a gallon of gas rose 1.9 cents overnight to $3.043, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Prices are up nearly 29 cents since mid-October and are 85 cents higher than a year ago.

Some analysts think oil prices have far outpaced levels that are justified by the underlying principles of supply and demand. These analysts blame market speculators for pushing crude prices to record levels, and predict that a correction, or sharp decline, is imminent.

"At some point, the market does actually discount the bullish possibilities," said Tim Evans, an analyst at Citigroup Inc., in New York. "That risk of exhaustion is very present here."

A separate report Wednesday by the International Energy Agency warning of an oil supply crunch by 2015 was not enough to send prices higher. The IEA concluded that growing demand for energy in China and India will boost the world's oil needs by more than 50 percent by 2030.

December gasoline futures rose 0.56 cent to settle at $2.4406 a gallon on the Nymex, and December heating oil futures rose 0.97 cent to settle at $2.6175 a gallon. December natural gas futures fell 23.9 cents to settle at $7.624 per 1,000 cubic feet on expectations that inventories rose last week and on forecasts for warmer weather in the Midwest and Northeast.

The EIA reported Wednesday that crude supplies fell by 800,000 barrels during the week ended Nov. 2, half the 1.6 million barrel decline analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires, on average, had expected.

Supplies at the Nymex delivery terminal in Cushing, Okla., fell by 1.7 million barrels.

Refinery utilization remained flat at 86.2 percent of capacity. Analysts had expected an increase of 0.8 percentage point.

Gasoline inventories fell by 800,000 barrels last week, countering analyst expectations for an increase of 200,000 barrels. Inventories of distillates, which include heating oil and diesel fuel, rose by 100,000 barrels last week. Analysts expected a decline of 500,000 barrels.

Imports of crude oil rose by an average of 275,000 barrels a day last week to 9.7 million barrels a day. Gasoline imports rose by 107,000 barrels last week to an average of 1.1 million barrels a day.

Demand for gasoline rose slightly last week, by about 12,000 barrels, the EIA said. Over the last four weeks, demand is up about 0.8 percent over the same period last year.

However, both Flynn and Evans questioned the EIA demand figures, noting they are often revised downward after the fact. If oil and gas prices continue to rise, demand will come down, analysts say.

"I would be surprised if we didn't see some kind of demand slowdown after a price increase of this level," Flynn said. "I'm not sure that we've seen the impact of this price spike yet on demand."

Oil prices are up 42 percent since August. Their seemingly relentless climb does raise the question of how high energy prices will go. If crude does keep going up, it might be some time until consumers see relief at the pump. Some analysts predict prices could rise as high as $3.50 to $4 a gallon next summer.

The Energy Information Administration predicts gas prices will remain above $2.90 a gallon for the rest of the year and will set a new record national average of $3.235 a gallon by May. In May 2007, prices peaked at $3.227 a gallon as refiners, faced with a series of unexpected outages, struggled to produce enough gas to meet demand.

Meanwhile, estimates of where oil is headed from here range from $50 a barrel to $120. Flynn, who long ago predicted prices would rise to near $100 this year, now says he is beginning to doubt whether prices will actually reach $100 a barrel during the current price spike.

"I think the market is due for a correction," Flynn said

If diesel inventories rose higher, then why the hizell are we paying so damn much for diesel. It is less refined than unleaded fuel!!!! Angry

These gas prices are making family trips or vacations harder each year.

There is a little BP station in Tampa near USF that still has $3.11 gallon for diesel. I am topping off tonight for sure.

Oil will run out eventually. We need to start looking for fuel alternatives within the next 10 or 20 years or theres going to be some serious problems. Without gas, everything would stop, the world would go into panic and everyone would start running around in circles.

There's more oil in Canada than all the mideast put together. The same with Siberia too. But we should look for alliterative, like magnetic energy. Its amazing what power and energy you can get out of magnetics

There are already alternative fuels out there. Look at what Brazil has done with its Ethanol derived from Cane By-products from sugar.... We have the technology already to do the same from corn, But the problem is that, that wouldnt contribute to the DEEP pockets of the peaple who run this country !!!!!
Not to mention, this country has damn near run all of the farmers out of business, so corn production probably wouldnt make it either...

Yeah, The only problem with that is actually getting ahold of the used cooking oil. I have a friend who has a set up that works using an old hot water heater as a base for it. BUT getting the used cooking oil has proven to be the HARD part.
Every place over here the oil is spoken for by a company that pays for it and the collective containers to store it in at the restaraunts.

Maybe Willie Nelson will bring his "Willie Bio diesel" here to Florida as he has in Texas Grin

How about just releasing the already acquired technology to make our current fossil fuel cars get 70  to 100 miles per gallon.  There are hundreds of vaporizer systems patents already out there to make our current vehicles get that kind of milage but the oil companies have bought all those patents.  Therefore I personally don't think it would matter if we made cars run on our own urine, I'm sure the Pres. along with his friends in the oil business would find a way to charge,, and over charge for the fill up.  If it goes to ethanol then I will guarantee that nobody would be able to afford to  sugar coat their corn flakes in the morning any longer.  Take a look at the price of corn.  Since E85 came around, the price of corn has gone up substantially.  It would be the same with any alternative fuel source.

For every great invention made for the greater good of man kind, there is an evil selfish greedy politician/business man,  ready to take that idea from man kind and slowly disburse it for a hefty profit for themselves.

Wow.
Well said. This is a fact.

Anyone who thinks the Bush family/administration cares about you is sadly mistaken. You feed them with your blood, sweat, and tears.
Our country is being invaded everyday crippling many parts of our economy. Yet this government believes our best interests are in countries that have oil. Countries that you and I will never go to.
We the people have been forced to listen to one lie after another.
Since we went to war, our fuel costs have gone up triple. Who is raking in all that money?
Someone said we will run out of oil... wrong. There is so much oil it's not funny. Wells replenish themselves and it doesn't come from decayed dinosaurs.  Nerd
This country has so many different problems that could be fixed only if we became a police state. I don't want that so I guess we have to deal with the selective law enforcement and the blatent corruption in the White House.

Here is a few links for you. The first one is fuel prices from 1993

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/mg_tt_usw.htm

Now the second is a good read. Lets think about it. The economy is doing much better now and we are making a heck of a lot more money with Bush in the office then when Clinton was in office. (Hasn't wages went up) I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth and everything I have, I worked hard for. Think about just ten or 15 years ago at how many on this forum couldn't buy a used quad, more less a new one to ride, and how many didn't have a computer to get online with. We couldn't afford it. Fuel prices may have gone up, there is nothing we can do about it except sit around and blame our president. Maybe we need to lower our standards of living some and then we can afford fuel. Here is a link.

Bio diesel may be great in some older heavy 18 wheelers but I wouldn't recommend it in any of these new small trucks. Warranty won't cover it and when you need an injector or an engine. It will cost way more then any savings you will be made from the bio diesel. They are not even made to run on the old deisel with the higher sulfur. You HAVE to run low sulfur fuel.
