Guys please dont blame the dog or the breed. I worked with police K-9's for some time now (about 2 years) ive seen some really weird SH*T. Ive seen some GSD's  and B.M.'s that will put some pits to shame on there persona. Pit are great dogs. THE OWNER just has to know what he has on his hands with that dog. I own an imported GSD with protection training under his belt,I know my dog i know what he looks like when he feels ancy. As a responsible dog owner that ANIMAL(lets not forget what he really is now) he is under my care and I an responsible for what he does or not does.  Ive only had to deal with one bite from my dog, I guess the guy was illiterate or just nuts. dont try to out run there dog they will get you especially if your still in the yard !!!! Dogs cant tell if you small or large they just know if you are a threat or not .

you have a baby boy or girl... is it worth the risk (that you might hurt you infant) to prove a point that dogs don't bite.  To prove that you trained your dog correctly.  I can't believe people are ok to try to prove something in thier own head.  ANY dog, cat, or animal can hurt your baby.  Why risk it, why put your kid in a position that the adults create to prove a point.  Priorities are all screwed up.  This is not a bash agianst pitbulls just any dog or cat or animal (could you imagine a 10' python wraped around a baby and someone saying he has NEVER hurt anyone and I have raised him never to hurt anyone)  That just makes it all ok.  That is sad.   Bang Head

As much as I love my pits and know that they would not hurt a child, I will not let them be around children as I wont let my girlfriends little tiny dogs get to close to a childs face you honestly never know when something could happen so I try to prevent it even though I dont think they will, People should'nt generalize these dogs as killers just because bad owners give these things a bad name

I'll jump in here.  I've never owned a pit or would ever own a pit.  But, I used to hog hunt when I was younger, and a lot of my friends had them.  They were very loyal dogs and great hunting dogs.  Like everyone else said pits get bad raps because of their ability to bite hard and  be agressive.  The major problem is with the owners.  If you have someone in your house why not put the protective dogs up.  I have a Black Lab and when somebody new comes in my house he goes into the laundry room.  I think he wouldn't hurt a fly, but he is very protective of my daughter and my son so why take the chance.

I feel for the the boy and and his family, and I have an idea what he is going through and will go through.  My wife was attacked the same way when she was five.  Her mother called their neighbors to borrow some butter.  My wife was sent over to get it.  She knocked on the door and was told to come in.  As she entered the neighbors pit bull named Max woke up and ran at her knocking her to the ground.  He then latched on to her lip and jaw and locked his teeth.  The owners got him off but the damage was already done. They rushed her to the hospital and she had multiple surgeries to repair the damage.  The dog was not taken by animal control because my father in-law shot it in their front yard.  The dog was not a bad dog it was just trying to be protective.  If the neighbors would have just locked their dog up it would of saved a lot of people some pain, just like in this case.

First off I don't put my kids out there to play with the dogs alone and I'm not using my kids to prove a point. I trust my dogs, and my kids know not to get in their faces. The play ball with them and run around the yard the don't wrestle or fight with them. I agree any animal can bite so what makes it any different than owning a parrot or a cat? You trust your animals for what they are animals. I don't put my kids in dangerous situations for any reason. My kids are 7,6 and 3.5 not small little babies. The people who got our male has a baby, what they do is their business. I didn't say they let the infant down with the him I said he slept by the door and kept watch over her. IMO I don't think he would do anything to hurt the baby but I raised him from the time he was 4 weeks old and he was 3yrs old when I got rid of him last year. I didn't want anymore litters so I got rid of him. Then we ended up taking in a male as a rescue and I have regretted getting rid of him.  You show your dogs trust and respect and they will be loyal and protective. You abuse them and you get a dangerous vicious animal.

Don't blame the breed?

Are you kidding me? Would you mind telling me what all dog breeds have in common? Their breed largely determines what they are capable of and how they will behave, that is the purpose of breeding. Pits are killers, they were bred that way! Once they attack they attack to kill, unlike many other breeds that might snap or bite, they usually will stop the attack by themselves, when commanded to do so, when the attackee beats them off, PITS don't do that, they will continue to attack regardless of anything. Destroy the breed!

You're dead wrong, My grandparents have had Boston Terriers for the past 45 years. These are little 15-25 lb dogs. I remember one time when I was a kid and walking the dogs with my grandfather, A Doby came charging across their yard in attack mode (approx 70LBS). This little 20lb terrier sat down and waited, when the Doby got to him he jumped and latched on to the Doby's throat, Within 3 minutes the Doby was dead. All dogs will attack when they are threatened. It's not just a Pit Bull thing.

I can tell you what they have in common...the all have mouths, sharp teeth, heads, bodies and atleast part of a tail!

You have to be the dumbest person I have ever read a post of. Pits don't attack to kill unless they are trained to. ( pits who are hog dogs are thrown into pens with adult wild hogs who almost kill them, thats how they are trained.. they don't just get a pit and say catch from day 1 and they do it.) Until you own a pit don't judge them. Destroy the breed?Huh Destroy ignorant people there's alot more of them and they make people get violent!

as the great Red Foreman says "Dumb Ass!"

thats a bad ass Boston there! Ours only snored and waddled but when she went blind she got mean.

Other Common Names:  Bull and Terrier Dog, Pit Bull, Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull

Scientific Name:  Canis familiaris  (Full Taxonomy)

Group:  Terriers

Origin or Range:  United States

Relative Size:  Average
    (as compared to other dogs)

Average Lifespan:  12 year(s)

Compatibility:  Relatively Aggressive
    (as compared to other dogs)

Category:  Mammals » Dogs

Animal Description:  Breed Standard
The American Pit Bull was developed in the 19th century. This breed was originally bred for use in dog fights, though today they are most commonly seen as companion animals. The most famous American Pit Bull may be "Petey" from the movie "Our Gang" - also known as "Little Rascals".

The American Pit Bull is a wonderfully loyal dog. They make terrific pets and do well in a variety of family settings. If selected from a reputable breeder for gentle temperament, along with early socialization and training, the American Pit Bull Terrier will grow into a healthy and mild-tempered dog. As a family protector, they are intelligent and obedient, sweet and selfless. They have also done well as dogs for handicapped owners and dogs for families with small children. They can be particularly strong-willed and aloof as pups, making early training necessary. Because they are dominant creatures, they will need to learn from the very start who is in control. Potential owners who are mild-mannered should not consider this breed. Though sometimes hard to train, they are responsive, and they will learn to do without having to be yanked, jerked, or otherwise punished. They should be trained with consistency and love. The Pit Bull has developed a bad reputation over the years, due largely to bad handling on the parts of the owners. An American Put Bull who has been properly trained and socialized can make a great pet, though they may not be suitable for first time dog owners.

At maturity, American Pit Bull Terriers will reach a height of 18 to 22 inches and weigh between 30 and 70 pounds. They are short and thickly built dogs with powerful square jaws. Their coats are short and shiny coming in all colors and markings, including brindle, white with patches, black, and red. Their short coats require little grooming.

Crossing Staffordshire Bull Terriers and extinct fighting bulldogs originally began the American Pit Bull Terrier's existence. They were created in the 19th century for dog fighting because of their high tolerance for pain and aggressive nature.

Specific Care Information:  Relative Care Ease: Relatively Difficult
They are very healthy dogs, suffering from only a few diseases and ailments, including hip dysplasia, cataracts, and some tumors. It has been reported that this breed may be more susceptible than some to mange. It has also been reported that this breed has an L shaped ear canal and very sensitive ears that require cleaning a couple of times a month.

Again, early training and obtaining a dog from a reputable breeder is a must with this breed.
