well, we finally got a 04 motor in our 700 sportsman, and well, it ran for a little while and started flashing that it was over heating and you can shut it off and let it sit and touch the motor and have it cool to the touch and try to fire it up and says it's over heating, any ideas? i can swear i read a post somewhere of the same issue but have no such luck on finding it

Make sure the radiator has been cleaned real good. If you take the front off of it and spray PB Blaster in the radiator and let it set for about 5 minutes and the just hose it out with a water hose the radiator will be cleaned real well. Most people use simple green to clean it or just spray at it and that don't work but the PB Blaster will get the film out of it and make it run cooler. Much better then then simple green.

What I first said would be a starting point. I f it still does it then it would be time to try something else. It could possibly be the sensor also but cleaning the radiator first is best and the cheapest way.

I belive you are remembering our post on our 04 500. There is a sensor my dad had to replace in the main part of the bike where the speedo and all that is. It was doing a bunch of wierd things and no monitors worked. PM Medicmudder and he can tell you what you need to know about it.

figured it out, makes me feel kinda shameful now that i know what is, we cleaned the raidiator and what not, checked sensors and my dad started to take apart the water pump, and while doing this, he tryed to force feed it water with a hose and it just spit it back out, so after this he did some further disassembly and figured then when it was shipped, the stuffed it full of paper towels to keep it from leaking in shipping and he missed a paper towel, thanks for your help and everything, runs fine now
